TOP 5 Adventure Motorcycle Books

Ranked #2,067 in Travel & Places, #73,309 overall

Motorcycle travel books I absolutely LOVE.

This is my list of personal favorites for adventure motorcycle travel. Whether you are dreaming of an Alaska trip, heading into Baja, touring Africa, tackling the Trans America Trail or just heading out for a nice weekend adventure on your motorcycle... these are all must reads!

#1- Adventure Motorcycling Handbook

This book is the most amazing and complete guide to motorcycle travel in existence. There was no question in my mind that this would be at the top of the list.

Chris Scott is on his 5th addition of the Adventure Motorcycling Handbook . Excellent trip reports, tips on planning, details on bikes and equipment, how to handle paperwork and borders... all presented in a fun to read format.

#2- The Essential Guide to Motorcycle Travel: Tips, Technology, Advanced Techniques

Another fantastic read. If you are looking for a purely informative book with checklists, wiring diagrams, equipment instructions... etc. then this is probably your best bet.

The Essential Guide to Motorcycle Travelalso has beautiful color photos and lots of life saving safety tips.

#3- Jupiter's Travels : Four Years Around the World on a Triumph

Less of a "how to" than the previous two entries, and slightly dated, this book reads more like a diary that chronicles Ted Simon's travels around the world on his adventure motorcyle.

Jupiter's Travelshas a great sense of adventure without all the gadgets and gizmos that seem to predominate modern "adventurers"

#4- Riding High

This is the follow up to Jupiter's Travels. He couldn't fit the trip into just one book since he was on his adventure for 4 whole years!

More of the same goodness.

#5- Long Way Round: Chasing Shadows Across the World

Ewan McGregor (yes, that Ewan McGregor) and Charley Boorman leave from London, and head east to New York... basically riding all the way around the world. Some misadventures here and there, but obviously they have a great support team. It's just cool to see two buddies enjoying a "ride" and the dynamics that develop between the two.

I really enjoyed the Long Way Round book, and recently watched the tv series on DVD which had me glued to the couch for an entire weekend.

You should check out "Tracks and Horizons". It's a motorcycle adventure done between 1964 and 1966 by Carlos Caggiani (my father). He did the trip with little money on an old '47 Indian Chief motorcycle and got into many crazy situations. It's available on Amazon in paperback and Kindle format: http://amzn.to/cXGNWj
