A life time dream of being a martial artist comes true

Since I was a little girl I always wanted to learn Taekwondo.
I put it off while my children were little due to being so busy taking them to ball games and band practice.
When my youngest was out of ball for the season due to a knee injury she decided she would rather take Taekwondo.
I watched her 6 hours a week kicking, punching and sparring and when I could stand it no longer I asked Master Howon Lee if I too could be his student.

This is my story. I hope it inspires other women to live their dreams, whether it's learning martial arts or something else. It's never to late..

Over fifty and kicking high

The family that kicks together sticks together

Learning Taekwondo was my dream from the time I was a little girl. I always thought it would be wonderful to know how to kick, spin and defend myself should I ever need to.
I watched movies with martial artists and something deep down inside me cried out to learn how to do the same thing.
I married and cared for children, running them back and forth to ball games and band practice.
When only the fourth child remained at home, my last little baseball player, she decided to learn Taekwondo while she was out with a knee injury.

Six hours a week I sat and watched her, the fire in my belly growing stronger each day. One day when I could no longer stand it I asked Master Howon Lee if I could be his student. He stood and thought for a moment and replied, "yes, Mama, you too can learn Taekwondo".

I began with only two classes a week. I still had to sit four more hours and watch my youngest daughter kick. Wow, she was a natural. It was so hard for me.
The fire in my belly burned even hotter so I asked if since I was present so many hours a week, if I too could take the classes my daughter took. Master Lee said, yes, I would get faster and better.

I wondered quickly if I had bitten off far more than I could chew. Here I was 50 years and 4 months old kicking and running with people half my age. Every part of my body ached, I hurt in places I didn't even know existed in my body. For the first time in my life I was buying Advil so I could drive home, sleep through the night and do class the next day.

My determination and Master Lee's encouragement paid off. Slowly but surely my body grew stronger, the kicks became easier to do. I got faster and my sparring improved.

Now at 52 and 1/2 I am still the oldest person in class, and a recommended black belt level four.

My oldest daughter, son, youngest daughter and grandson also take now.

We say that "The family that kicks together sticks together".

It's wonderful when my youngest daughter, only a few months away from second degree black belt teaches me my new form or goes over my kicks and punches with me.

She is so good at Taekwondo and very proud of her mother who kicks right along side her.

If you've ever dreamed of learning Taekwondo or any thing else.. put it off no longer. Do it. Reach for the stars and accomplish your dreams.
