Taking Control Of Consumer Debt

Perhaps you've heard the expression "knowledge is power." In the case of consumer debt, having a clear understanding of your debt and personal financial situation can help you take control of your finances and become debt free. This is so even if you've made some of the common mistakes listed below in the past, because improving your debt and finance habits now can help you significantly in the long run:

1: Do you have too many credit cards in your wallet? Shockingly, there are more active credit cards than human beings in the United Kingdom. According to APACs, in late 2007, there were 73,000,000 credit and charge cards active in the UK, but only approximately 60,000,000 people, including children, teenagers and babies!

The credit card issuers know that it is hard to resist the temptation of buying something if you do not need to pay cash to do it. Having too many credit cards in your wallet is a very dangerous temptation that creates the potential to increase your debt load far above what you want or need it to be. This is why credit card companies offer such seemingly generous introductory offers; they know that once they have you "hooked," it can be very difficult to get out of debt. If you have a credit card, or several, on which you are carrying a balance, now is the time to take control. Start this strategy by paying the balances on the cards that have the highest annual percentage rates because you are paying more per month in interest to the credit card issuer on those cards. Getting those balances paid in full allows you to become debt free faster, and less expensively.

2: Do your credit cards give you an excuse to spend more than you earn? If you are spending more than you are earning, you are falling into the debt trap. Many people use their credit cards when they are low on cash, and this results in increased debt. To take control, you should vow to use cash, not credit cards, for your purchases. Your simple rule should be that if you do not have the cash, you should not make the purchase. Follow this rule, and you will begin the process of taking back control.

3: Do you sometimes miss a credit card payment or send it in late? Another pitfall that keeps people in debt are missed and late payments. When a cardholder misses a payment or is even a day late in making a payment, the card issuers impose outrageous fees that make it even more difficult to get out of debt. Always do everything in your power to make your payments on time. Most card issuers report to the credit bureaus, so a missed or late payment results in not just an expensive late fee, but also a negative report on your credit. Take control by making your payments on time so that you will have no problems getting credit in the future.

4: Do you something think you've lost touch with your finances? Out of sight, out of mind is a terrible strategy for those wishing to take control over their debt. Always stay focused on how much cash you have in your bank account and how much your card balances are. Take control by focusing on the problem, rather than ignoring it. You'll be surprised at how much more powerful and in control you will feel. And, if you are concerned that there may have been some adverse reports made to the credit bureaus, checking your credit report is an excellent way to refocus on the reality of your situation.

5: Do you need help, but you've not asked for it? If you need help, take control and get assistance. Unfortunately, debt does not simply go away, and if you find that you are unable to make credit card, department store or even mortgage payments, then you need to take control by seeking assistance at the earliest possible moment.

If you do take control by seeking help and you qualify, the beauty of doing so is that you could find yourself debt free in only 60 months with an IVA.
