The Tarot Deck

The Tarot Deck comes in many different forms. Within each card, the suits and tarot card definitions are the same, but the illustrations on each card is different. The illustrations within each deck are based on various different things such as nature, animals, dragons, fantasies, etc.

In the United States, the most common Tarot Deck is called the Rider-Waite deck. This 78 card deck was created in 1909, and was quickly sold throughout the US.

Each Tarot Deck is made up of two different types of cards; the Minor Arcana and the Major Arcana. For both types, their are four suits, just like a regular deck of playing cards. But, instead of clubs, spades, diamonds, and hearts, the minor Arcana has:

* wands
* swords
* cups
* circles or pentacles

The Major Arcana are not associated with the suits. They include the picture cards that represent principles, concepts and ideals. They are numbered one through 21, with the 22nd card (the "Fool") marked as zero. The Major Arcana cards represent strong, long-term energy or big events in some area of life.

* Temperance
* Death
* The Fool
* The Hanged Man
