The origin of tarot is not known for sure, but it is recorded that they were already in existance in the year 1200. Some believe that the tarot or the imagery of the Tarot has been traced to the collective unconscious while others believe that it preserves the wisdom of the ancient Egyptians, also the traditions of the pagan Celtic and it has also been connected with medieval heretics.

The only thing that we do now for sure is that many people from all walks of life have been able to harness some connection with their subconcious mind through working with the cards. In the same way that memory cards help people to improve their memories, so do tarot cards promote a connection with the sub-concious mind, or physic ability or the ability to percieve things through your sixth sense.

How exactly does it work. Each card has a depiction of a particular person or suit. There are universal interpretations of these cards and their symbols but in the process of learning these interpretations, many people begin to percieve other less obvious connections. The first step to being able to release those inner understandings is to learn the basics and then to allow your mind to continue the journey.

In Tarot there are two different suits. There are the major acana or trumps and then there is the minor acana.

The minor acana are very similar to playing cards with one exception. Instead of having a King, Queen and Knight and cards ace to ten, there is an additional card in the Tarot suit. We also have the Page. So there are four court cards and then of course the ten numbered cards. The biggest difference between the Tarot pack and a standard playing pack is that in the playing pack there is only one additional card, the Joker whilst in the Tarot, there are twenty two extra cards and they are..

Each of these Major Acana have their own interpretation and their own imagery and symbolism. Over time you will get to know each one as a charater or event or human attribute.

No matter how little you know about Tarot cards, you will be amazed at how wonderfully ornate the cards that are available can be.

Choosing a set of cards is always a personal decision. Some buy them because they like to the look of them or others because they can understand the names or because they are the same as the book being used to learn initial card skills. Whatever the reason, remember that it is the right reason for you. It's important to understand that your choice of cards is both your personal preference as well as you subconcious mind giving you guidance.

Once you have your cards and your books, it's time to do a little card training. The first steps will be to familiarise yourself with each card. Spend time with your cards, reading the interpretation that others offer on them and also looking for symbolism that will prompt you to your own understanding.

This process can takes days or weeks, months and even years. Although I have had my cards for over twenty years, there are days that new things appear within them that I had not noticed before. I have at times spent an hour or two just shuffling the cards and then laying them out on the table, one at a time through the whole pack allowing my mind to wonder on the symbols and the pictures and anything that comes into my head. At times, the hour or two will fly by and feel like seconds, other times I'll feel every minute.

I suspect that the hours that fly are a type of mediation, a state of bliss when the outside world just does not exist. After these types of sessions, I always feel a little more alive and a able to be a lot more present - in the moment - with my family for the rest of the day.

Just that feeling alone is enough to justify the investment I made many years ago with my own cards.
