If you really want to learn Tarot reading then you will...it all depends upon how much you want it!
This lens is to introduce you to Tarot cards and is aimed at teaching you the bare basics and essentials required to enable you to begin reading the cards yourself.
I will teach you how to best interpret the symbols on the cards and how to lay out a spread of cards so that you may be able to give your very first Tarot reading for a friend or family member as it is deemed by some Tarot card readers as being unlucky to read the cards for yourself... yet other card readers say that it is fine to read your own cards as long as your questions are clear. But for now at least untill you have gotten the gist of your cards I suggest reading for another rather than for yourself.
Nothing too complicated to start you off with so that you can feel comfortable and can get a feel for the cards. And believe me, once you realise just how accurate the cards are in divination or fortune telling as some people call it, there will be no holding you back ...enjoy!
Before you can begin you will need to buy the following items:
Before you can begin to learn how to read the Tarot cards it is best to have all of the right tools for the job from the start so that you can put into practice what you learn as you learn it without having to wait untill you obtain anything.
Depending upon which deck you choose to use the initial outlay for Tarot card reading is minimal, of course if you decide that you want to spend a lot of money or very little money the readings which your cards give you won't be any better or any worse...the most important things lie within you and not in the quality of the velvet and those things are dedication and belief.
- A new deck of Tarot cards
- A large piece of black or dark velvet for laying out the cards
- A velvet bag or wooden box to store your cards when they're not being used
- A book explaining your particular deck of Tarot cards as each deck has different symbols or pictures which you will need to learn
- A writing pad and pencil to jot down the order that each card was drawn as some readings can take quite some time to complete and by jotting them down you can come back to the reading later if you haven't allowed yourself adequate time to complete a reading.
- A silver or white candle which isn't essential for the reading but it creates the right atmosphere and helps the querent to focus on their question for which they would like an answer.
How the Tarot deck of cards is structured.
I use the Rider-Waite Tarot deck of cards and will be using them throughout this page.

There are 78 cards in the Tarot deck which are divided into two parts; The Major Arcana and the Minor Arcana. The word Arcana means mystery or secret.
There are 56 cards in the Minor Arcana which are divided into four suits, each suit has 10 pip cards and 4 court cards much like that in a normal deck of playing cards .The Major Arcana contain just 22 cards.
It seems likely that the Tarot cards were devized to represent stages in a system of initiation and it is possible to interpret them as a sequence of events or lessons which must be learnt in order to achieve spiritual enlightenment as in the ancient system of Alchemy and Hermetic philosophy. And so we use the 22 Major Arcana as a set of tools for learning about ones inner-self and deeper motivations.
The Minor Arcana is divided into four suits: Wands, Swords, Cups and Pentacles and these four suits represent Fire, Air, Water and Earth. Cups being the water, Wands being the fire, Pentacles being earth and Swords being air. There are of course more in-depth explanations for why each suit has been linked to each element but you dont need to know the connection untill you have learnt all the basics.
So here we go into the next section of this lens where I will explain to you as simply as I can the meaning of each card within each of the four suits.

The Court Cards of The Minor Arcana
The court cards of the minor Arcana are The Page, The Knight, The Queen and The King
The Court Cards
In a tarot reading the court cards are thought generally to represent particular people who are known to the querent (the person being read) or people that they will meet .
The court cards in the suit of Wands represent someone who is lively and extroverted.
In the suit of Cups the court cards represent someone who is quiet and introverted and inclined to daydream.
In the suit of Swords the court cards represent intellectual people that think rationally.
And finally the court cards of the suit of Pentacles represent practical people with common-sense who are good at making things with their hands.
The Major Arcana
Archetypes for the life path

The images of the major arcana can be seen as the representations of all the human archetypes. In addition, the cards of the major arcana map out our path through life as we grow and develop.

Getting Started
Use the three card spread for a while at least untill you and your cards get to know the feel of each other is my suggestion.

The three card spread is probably the easiest to lay out as it obviously uses just three cards, but that has no reflection on the ammount of detail which can be obtained by this simpler spread whatsoever.More often than not I give a more in-depth reading using this spread than all of the spreads which I have used...remember the saying "less is more" !
This spread asks the reader to lay out 3 tarot cards to represent the querents/clients past, present and future.
Once you have bought your Tarot deck I suggest that you try doing a reading right away, maybe using the more simple three-card spread as there is nothing like learning by actually doing, especially in Tarot reading. It matters not whether you take weeks to learn the meanings of each card by heart or whether you spend just an hour or so trying to remember the pictures because in Tarot reading you cannot get the essence or feel for the cards untill you actually use them in some readings.
First you should relax and clear your mind of your problems and outside vibes which could interfere with the reading. It is very important that the main question which the querent wants an answer to from the reading is quite clear and well defined as then the answer to that question shall also be clear and well defined whereas a vague question will bring about a vague answer.
And there you have it basically, now all you need to do is to make sure that you handle your deck as much and as often as you can and keeping them close to you at all times so that the cards get a feel for you and you get a feel for your cards, along with a bit of practice you will soon see that your querents are happy with the information which you and your cards have provided them with and will more often than not want to return for another reading, which is always better than the previous one, just make sure that enough time has passed since their last reading such as 3 months or more so that the cards do not get confused and give the same answers as before...you may well laugh at that but you wait and see for yourself ...
Your Tarot cards should never be handled by anyone other than you except to cut the deck of cards before a reading after they have been shuffled by you whilst the querent focuses on the issues they may hope to find answers to from the reading, ensuring a more accurate reading for the querent.

- As you get to understand your chosen deck of cards ...as you say there are many then your readings will become more personal to you (the reader) and more accurate for the querent (the one being read), to begin reading though I suggest that you go along the lines of how the cards are explained here...you will be surprised at what else the cards reveal to you that hasn't been mentioned here...and no readings are the same ever, not even when the exact same cards have been drawn for different people because the symbolism of the cards are depicting particular areas of the querents life and no life is exactly the same as any others.
