Unless you have an exact vision of the image you would like inked on your skin, however, you probably need some guidance to help you design your own tattoo.What is the Purpose?
Is there a particular event you want to memorialize or a particular person significant to the tattoo? If so, you may want to incorporate letters or numbers into your design in addition to symbols and images. If you are getting a tattoo just for fun, you will want to think about symbols that have always been artistically pleasing to you, and symbols with meanings that express who you are. Consider the purpose or reason behind your desire to get a tattoo, and that will help you get started on possible content. If you are still stumped for ideas, incorporate themes from your heritage, because that will be a part of you forever. Perhaps the best way to come up with an idea for your own tattoo design is to simply look inside yourself.
Start Collecting
The easiest way to get ideas is to browse through various galleries of tattoo designs and create a collection of tattoo designs (or pieces of a design) attract or inspire you. If letters are to be part of the design, search for galleries that offer a wide variety of lettering options. Even if you don't consider yourself to be creative, these tattoo galleries can offer great ideas; and if you prefer, you can take your favorites to a tattoo artist who may be able to help you piece together a quality design. In some cases, it may also be helpful to browse galleries in which tattoos are displayed on parts of the body versus a standalone graphical image; but in any case keep an open mind.

Once you have decided on the design, whether it is complete or you need assistance with the final details and adjustments, it's time to take your ideas to a tattoo artist. Almost every tattoo shop in the world has services that allow you to design your own tattoo, with some of them doing more of this type of personalized business than others. Choose a quality tattoo artist that meets your needs and keep in mind that creativity and imagination is what keeps tattoo shops afloat.
