Kids and coupons

Adults who use coupons get rewarded with discounts on items purchased. You can also use the same concept to reward kids for tasks performed. You will be pleasantly impressed with the results.

how the coupon concept works

In my household, I used to have a 4 year old who used to like to wreak havoc in the house. As soon as I enter the house it seemed like a tornado went through it. Since I operate a coupon code website, one day I had an idea to encourage my kid through the use of coupons. I created coupons to be redeemable for different rewards he wanted. Among some of the coupons were items like this:

  • Clean up toys - redeemable for 30 minutes of television.

  • Doing homework - redeem for 30 minutes of computer games.

  • Sharing toys with his brother - Redeem for your favorite dessert, ice cream.

  • 10 for 1 coupons - Do something like homework for 10 days and you get to go to Chuck E. Cheese.

These are some examples of the coupons I made. I then proceeded to make a large poster board with different pockets so that Junior could see the progress of collecting his different rewards. To peak his interest, I also made the coupons from different colors of construction paper, so he will become more interested.

The results

As time passed, I could really see improvements in his behavior and responsibility. Soon enough, I didn't have to tell him to clean up his toys. Instead he would approach me asking where his coupon was for cleaning up his toys. You will really be surprised at how this 'reward' system really improves your child's responsibility skills.

Reward systems encourage children to attain goals and achieve them. It teaches them responsibility, consequences and rewards. It doesn't necessarily have to be coupons, you can use a weekly chart with star stickers and list chores vertically with days of the week horizontally. When stars are filled to your satisfaction, they can exchange them for rewards. The reason I chose coupons is because I was able to write large descriptions of the coupon so they can get an added benefit: reading. When your child asks you what 'redeem' means then you know you have encouraged him to read.

Conclusion

I hope I have encouraged you to motivate your children and teach them real world tasks through fun and innovative ways. When children can have fun learning, you will be teaching them that responsibility is rewarded.
