Product Description
Remember what DJs used in the club before the 1200s? Nobody else does either. That's because this turntable's heavy-duty design, vibration-resistant construction, and mechanical precision make a lot of what those early DJs did possible. This deck was the first to feature a Direct Drive motor, quartz movement for total accuracy, adjustable tone arm weights, anti-skate control, a pop-up target light and a sliding pitch control. With each new improvement, as form follows function, the Technics turntable has become a thing of beauty. From the community centers at the beginning of the disco era to the clubs of today, the Technics SL1200MK2 sets the standard again, from a tradition that the series has championed for over 30 years. The best, regardless of price
by .. Jay L. Rudko (Pembroke Pines, FL USA)
I am a vinyl junkie. There; I've said it. And for years I was in search of the perfect turntable on which to indulge my passion. This turntable is analog nirvana. Clearly, this turntable was intended for both the professional and home markets. The direct drive motor keeps the platter precisely on speed thanks to the quartz-locked control, or varied with the pitch control slider. A green light lets you know when you're locked right on speed. In addition, the strobe on the outer rim of the platter helps you gauge where you are when you adjust the pitch. The S-shaped tonearm offers adjustments for tracking force, anti-skate, AND vertical tracking angle. The importance of VTA is often downplayed, but I can tell you it matters! When it's right, you'll know. I have no fewer than 16 cartridges on headshells that can be used on this turntable, and all sound excellent. But my strongest recommendation for the best cartridge to use with the 1200for home use is the Denon DL-160 high output moving coil.My records have never sounded better, and this cartridge, like the turntable, is a bargain. I've been using this combination for transferring some of my favorite LP's to CD so I can play them in my car. In many cases, the sound was so good it was hard to tell this was an analog transfer. This is definitely the finest turntable ever built, regardless of price. Even the snooty high end audiophiles should take a good look at this table if they want great sound at a bare-bones price (compared to most high end turntables that don't do anything this one does). There's something to be said as to why this turntable has been available for so long. I've had mine for nearly 20 years, and I'll never let go!
Still around for a reason...
by .. R. Phillips (Cleveland, OH USA)
Just use mine for playing records at home. Sounds better than a $500.00 "budget audiophile" table I got rid of. Speed is always accurate and steady. Everything's easily and precisely adjustable. Nice, rich, "unfinicky", yet detailed sound, "set it and forget it". Good isolation. Solid build.
Got excellent sound with a Shure M97xE cartridge. Just found a great deal on a Denon DL-103 low output moving coil on eBay from a foreign source. VINYL HEAVEN!!! This combination really does beat CD on my system, in "life" and overall smoothness, when run through my Jolida JD-9 phono stage.
Everybody knows the 1200 is a great DJ table. With the right cartridge, I honestly don't think it can be beat for home use either, without spending considerably more. Too bad they don't make an automatic version that lifts the needle at the end of the record like they did in the old days. Bet it'd sell better than they think. I'm willing to "babysit" the 1200 for the wonderful sound it delivers though...
HIGHLY RECOMMENDED FOR SPINNING VINYL ANYWHERE!!!
Super solid turntable
by .. S. Lewis (San Francisco, CA USA)
THis is the first new 1200 that I have purchased, but not the first I have owned. Funny thing is, this wasn't even for me. Was a gift to a great friend. Either way, the 1200s are great turntables. They are very versitile & can take the abuse of spinning, or just run on doing mundane vinyl playback.
Setup is a relatively easy process & you can keep it simple & have it work well forever, or tweek out over things to make minute changes to get the abosolute best possible sound.
Anyway, these things are reliable, tanks, will last forever, & though it seems pricey, will provide for you for years...probably until you sell it to someone else who can use it too!
The Ultimate Turntable
by .. W. H. Jamison, Jr. (Burien, Washington United States)
Occasionally a piece of equipment comes along that is so well designed, well built and far ahead of the pack that it defines the state of the art and any major improvements are not only unnecessary but impossible. 30 some odd years ago Technics released the first SL1200 direct drive turntables and defined what phono turntables should be; affordable, reliable, excellent. In the 30 years since then there have only been minor revisions to the SL1200.
If you're like me and you have a vinyl fetish the 1200 MK2 is the turntable to buy, the extra heavy duty construction that made this deck so popular with DJs at clubs serves audiophiles just as well at home. The 1200MK2 is impossibly smooth; turn it on and watch as the platter gets up to speed in a single rotation, the platter speed is incredibly accurate, again, this sets the standard. Combined with a properly installed cartridge (I use a Shure Type 15 VMR) this turntable will give you years of pleasure from your record collection

A masterpeice!
by .. ED (USA)
I have owned turntables costing several thousand dollars in the past. They are getting older now and I thought new one in the reasonable price range but high quality. I put in my Shure V15xMR in the arm tracking at 1g. Perfect tracking - super low rumble and no hum at all with or wo grounding. The construction is first class. This is a super bargain - it has been improved over the years. Yes you can spend a lot more - this product delivers in all the important ways. For many it is not expensive enough and has low snob appeal. If a small company were to make this turntable - my guess it would cost around > 1500.00. Panasonic has been making it for over 30 years now! Rarely does a product remain available for such a long time. The reason - this is a masterpeice!

The Chief Boot Knocker of All House Rockers
by .. J. Hoffman (Southeast Minnesota)
I ditched my training wheels for these Technics tables. Basically, I went from class C to class A DJ equipment. These tables perform better than they are written about. Sound quality, platter torque, durability, and everything else exceeded my expectations. The sound of my scratching, beat juggling, and mixing now sounds like a professional behind the wheels. I recorded several demos and played them back for friends and family who know I DJ. When the demo was done, they were amazed that it was me making the beats. These tables do come with a price tag but if you can afford them, BUY THEM! You'll never buy another analog turntable again. When you own these units, you are an all star MVP playing in the majors. I love these tables!
Bravo Technics !
by .. Armando M. Mesa (Chandler, AZ)
Other than the Gold Ltd. Edition Technics turntable, this is the one to make any dj the envy of the block. Expanded pitch adjustable features, braking adjustment settings, and long lasting led illuminator lights and increased anti-skating make this absolutely a spectacular analog machine/ dj instrument. Quality build is superb and built to outlast anything out there in the competitive market... The ONLY minor mistake not used in really completing the whole package is a lack of a key adjust control. Basically, with a key adjust you can speed up or slow down the beats or the music without vocalists sounding like chipmunks, or Barry White speaking in slow motion ! Key adjust just changes the speed of the music and vocals, not the pitch or tune...This is just a small bonus feature that would have been nice to have; Denon and another company name have already done this for their brand of DJ turntables...

Great Product
by .. D. Savett (US Forces)
This turntable works very well for me. It came shipped with the belt unattached to the drive motor pully which is an advantage to me. I was assured that the belt would not arrive weakened and stretched from unknown months/years in a warehouse. The only reason I did not give it 5 stars is that there was no strobe on the side to confirm RPM.
Because I like records
by .. W. Gillespie (Edwardsville, IL)
I am not a sneering audiophile, just a dignified music lover who invested in hundreds of records in the 1980s and since. So I decided to upgrade my 20-year-old turntable with something reputable that wouldn't hurt the records but wouldn't cost multiple hundreds of dollars. I bought this turntable, and, at the advice of some other reviewers, the Grado black P-mount cartridge. Warning: it may be possible to break the tonearm by installing the cartridge carelessly, so unplug everything, lock down the arm, and proceed with great delicacy. My ears/speakers may not be good enough to appreciate the improvement the new ($60) cartridge has made--in any event I did not do controlled listening experiments--but it's nice that I have the original cartridge as a spare. My only problem with the turntable is the cuing arm drops the needle too quickly, making it slide off the runoff groove into the first track, possibly risking scratching the record. It is possible to set it down gently by manipulating the lever so, but that should happen automatically. Or be adjustable. Despite this flaw, I am very happy to have new and old turntables and cartridges to enjoy all this fine music, and in case this technology ever really does go obsolete. Because one of the other reviewers complained that the Grado cartridge buzzes, I thought I should add this review to say that it sounds great to me.
Another satisfied user.

I bought the turntable last month since I decided to get back into playing vinyl LP's since used LP's are so cheap. I like being able to read the liner notes without using a magnifying glass. :-P
I have a Radio Shack 50 watt per channel integrated amplifier with a phono input and a ground screw. I just put the turntable together, plugged it in and connected the ground wire. It works like a charm! Sounds great and plays all my records without a hitch (or skip).
I read that the cartridge that came with it has a conicle needle and a cartidge upgrade would help so I got a Audio-Technica AT311EP replacement cartridge and put it on the turntable. No problems whatsoever.
I'm happy and have been adding to my vinyl LP collection ever since.
Satisfied customer
by .. Steve (Erie, PA)
After not being able to listen to my records for many years, I bought this turntable. I was disappointed when the auto-return did not operate properly and I had to return it. However, the online return was very simple - I took it to Staples - and had a replacement, surprisingly, in a couple of days, probably before the defective one got back to the factory.
Now I am very satisfied with my purchase and have been enjoying my records, most of which are not available on CD. Some reviewers suggest that this turntable needs a better needle and cartridge. Unless you're an audiophile and have very sensitive ears, don't bother. The sound is just fine.
OK product, crappy seller
by .. J. Siegel (San Francisco, CA)
I received my turntable in, what I thought, perfect condition. "Super Saver Shipping" is actually USP ground from NY, which takes all of eternity and then some, to arrive in CA.
The turntable itself looks sturdy, but I haven't been able to test anything else, as the needle it came with was BROKEN. Which now means I have to buy a $21 dollar replacement. Or wait through the living hell of returning the item to J&R, a seller that doesn't accept normal e-mail returns.
Amazon should really look into who sells on their website.

Audiophile Quality
by .. James B. Charles (New Jersey)
I looked into purchasing many turntables in the "audiophile" category. After doing quite a bit of research, I found the following information rather helpful:
a) This turntable was designed in the 70s as state-of-the-art. The Technics factory had to tool-up to create it. The cost today would be in the millions to get a factory to begin producing something comparable. The market is simply no longer there to do so.
b) The magnetic direct drive system allows incredibly impressive wow and flutter and rumble specs. I can confirm black backgrounds and deadly accurate speeds. No piano warbles. Details like that are very important to me. The audiophile brands will have you believe that belt drive is superior. Why? See (a)
c) This thing is built like a tank. Im not sure of the exact weight (25lbs?), but I'm always surprised when I try to move it. I can imagine it will be around long after I have departed.
I paired this TT with an AT440MLA. I no longer listen to CDs at home if the vinyl is available. Good vinyl + this turntable is vastly superior.
Upgrades are available if you'd like a new tonearm or cabling. Check KAB USA for other stuff like fluid damping and strobe-disabling.
Highly Recommended.
Rock solid performance
by .. Phil N. Tropic (Vermont, USA)
I've used a lot of turntables over the years. My application is getting he best possible sound out of old vinyl, primarily for digitizing.
I've recently upgraded my whole system for this purpose, and this turntable is part of that upgrade.
This is the most solid, quietest, and impressive turntable I've seen. Unlike my old Thorens, this one looks and feels like it will last forever. Rumble is way below lathe rumble in the disks themselves, and the torque must be experienced to be believed. I can apply quite a bit of effort on cleaning grungy vinyl without stalling it - a huge advantage over belt drive turntables.
The tonearm is well made, and tracks warped vinyl better than almost anything I've used.
There is some low-frequency lateral resonance when playing poorly mastered records, but it's well below audible frequencies and easily filtered out.
If you want to spend more you probably can, but I sincerely doubt there's a better turntable for any practical purposes.
Some might regret the lack of automatic turn-off, but I like the simplicity of the design.
Audiophiles - Forget about belt drive toys, this is your table
by .. Olderenglish (Austin, TX)
Everyone knows these tables are built like tanks and will last forever. Not many people realize however that the 1200 sounds great too. With a good cartridge (I use a Shure M97xe) this table absolutely cannot be beat for sound quality by any table anywhere NEAR it's price range.
Go ahead and compare the rumble and wow and flutter specs between the Technics 1200 and any of the belt drive 'audiophile' tables under $2000. If you do this you'll find two things; most companies won't publish these specs (guess why,) the ones that do are producing tables with inferior specs to the Technics 1200.
Let the uninformed have their plastic belt drive toy tables, I'm keeping a 1200 on my shelf. Unrivaled reliability and specs plus dead solid locked rpms for me thank you.

The industry standard.
by .. Brownthing (UK)
When a turntable remains the industry standard for more than 20 years, you should know there is good reason for it. A solid, reliable platform for any DJ's creativity. You don't need any of the fancy gizmos on the digital decks, all you need are these, some good tunes and a bit of imagination.
Seriously ragged.

no-brainer
by .. Robert K. Kope (San Francisco)
a DJ turntable for hi-fi? yes! powerful, stable, weighty, easy to set up and use.
i always wondered why my belt-drive turntables wouldn't spin with the cleaning brush applied to a record...the price to pay for better isloated/quieter system? cleaning a record on this table is not going to stop the platter and i was pleasantly surprised that the sound quality exceeded my thorens td-160 (which sounded better than my B&O, luxman, AR and entry-level rega).
all of my previous turntables are eclipsed by the 1210, if you're on the fence (looking for a sub-$2K unit) go for it. if you're thinking of a USB 'table... :-P

by .. Michael C. Anderson (USA)
Absolutely blow away. Precise tracking, skate, balance controls. Unwavering drive speed, extremely low rumble and is also a very well isolated unit.
Fantastic for audiophile enthusiasts or archiving to digital. Highly recommended unit. Also beautiul to look at, a bonus.
Oh, apparently you can DJ with this thing too...
Mated with a low noise pre-amp, and audiophile quality needle/cartridge (not included) delivers amazing sound. Literally makes the need for replacing your LP's with new CD's unecessary unless heavy wear present.
Very pleased and the 1210's available in black, 1200's in silver will match most home set-up schemes.
Definetly to be considered a high-end unit.
The De Facto Turntable
by .. Jay (Brooklyn, New York)
I am a DJ/Beatmaker from Brooklyn N.Y. and have grown up with hip-hop. The 1200's are the de facto standard for DJ's and studio work. There is a reason why they are found in every club and studio on the planet! They have solid build, very stable and realiable....will last a lifetime! I had an older pair that went "missing" during a move and so I had to replace them with these. I brought two and highly recommend them to all turntablist and beatmakers...........keeping it hot in East New York......Supreme.
Craftsmanship, Stability, Accuracy
by .. Keeba Johnson (New York/Texas)
TECHNICS have overturned the status quo in the turntable market. The craftsmanship of the MK5's are unmatched. I tested both the Numark TTX1's and Technics 1210 MK5's.
The Numarks are great, I really cannot put them down. In fact I may get one of them for my son. However, not just relying on the Technics history or popularity, but on actual hands on testing and comparing to other decks, the Technics just feel so much better.
The stability and strength of these decks when mixing, scratching, blending and beat juggling is simply superior. When rubbing the vinyl on the MK5's you can tell it is a premium product.

Good feel, bad sound
by .. ill13 (new haven, ct)
Feels nice under your hand. However, as previously mentioned, the lag on load time is horrendous. 30 seconds is a *very* long time to a dj. Concerning the FX, one of which is to emulate the actual sound of vinyl on a 1200 being pitched up and down just sounds harsh and digital -like a poor timestretch algorithm. I like and use Technics 1200s but this product is a failure. Stick with CD-Js from Pioneer, if you need CD -or move to Traktor/Final Scratch/Serato Scratch Live, if you want the vinyl feel. [This review is based on actual club use, by a professional dj].
What can I say.
by .. Freddy Guerra (Calgary, Alberta, Canada)
When I first bought the Technics SL-DZ1200, I bought it more for the looks then anything. Actually I would rarely get on it for the first few months, maybe once every 2-3 weeks. When I actually started to learn its features, and mix it with my crossfader mixer's FX, then I think I fell in love. Mind you, if you want really mind blowing FX, you'll probably have to connect it to some other unit, but apart from that, The scratching is pretty good, some times, when I practice, the scratch actually sounds like a Vinyl (Not Always), but the more I practice with it, the more closer it sounds to it. Like the first review said, it does take some time for the CD to load, but hey, isnt everything in life like that? Buy some other CD Turntable, and it will probably beat Technics in some areas, but then Technics will do the same in the other areas. You win and lose, regardless.
So just look better then the other people. ;-)
BEWARE - 30 second cd load time.
by .. djwingman (Bay Area, CA USA)
If you plan on using your unit for real gigs, BEWARE. It takes at least 30 seconds from the moment the deck accepts your cd to the moment you can actually start cueing it up. NOT GOOD.
I have 2 of these but they've been relegated to weddings because they look amazing and attract a lot of attention. But that's it.
If you run into problems, good luck on getting technical support. I've had to learn to deal with one of my units randomly skipping across cd's because the certified technicians were never able to duplicate or find root cause.
Oh, and check out what your local bars and clubs are using because I guarantee you it's not the sl-dz1200.
Panasonic Technics SL-DZ1200 Direct-Drive Digital Turntable

Finally, Technics has out done themselves. For those who have been acustomed to turntables and have been hesitant to journey into the world of CD turntables, your time has arrived. This unit is loaded with features that are user friendly. My only knock is the price, but if you can afford it GET IT!
Oh.......My.......God
by .. Norfeest (Washington DC USA)
Okay, before I start my review of this product, let's be clear on a few things: You're about to read a review written by someone that considers himself one VERY stubborn skeptic. I consider myself a hip hop purist. I've been a DJ since 1994 and I hold vinyl in the highest of regards. I don't think anything will EVER be able to fully replace it. When I first heard about CD turntables being released to the public, I thought it was nothing short of blasphemous. I literally refused to lay my hands on one simply because I thought they were for lazy DJs and people with so little skill that they needed computerized turntables to take all the guess work out for them. That was until one day when I stopped by one of my favorite spots to cop some vinyl and another turntable. One of the salesman who I'd come to know on a first name basis and trusted a great deal introduced me to the marvel that is the Technics SL-DZ1200. I was still skeptical while he was showing me its capabilities. I had no intention of buying it at all......until I laid hands on it. Seriously, there is NOTHING that you can do with vinyl that you can't do with the SL-DZ1200s. What the previous reviewer said is true, you have to have a hands on encounter before you can make a fair assessment of this piece. I stood there scratching and mixing CDs for about an hour. After all was said and done, I left the store as an owner of one....and I'm not even a Technique kind of guy, I prefer Stanton turntables. The platter itself feels like vinyl and you can literally scratch the CDs like they were vinyl. You'll love it, no question. The previous review is very accurate. If you have a huge vinyl collection like I do (over 3000), then I can understand your hesitation. But I also have a growing CD collection (over 1500) and I would love to incorporate some of that material into my rotation. The switch for me was totally logical and I think that many other DJs will end up doing the same if they give this baby a spin.
If I had to find a beef, naturally, it would be the hefty price tag. CD turntables, depending on what brand and what features they have, can run you $700 - $3000 easy. And you have to wonder if the ability to play MP3s and CDR/RWs could lead to bigger issues. You'd never have to buy anything other than blank CDs and internet access. While I think that doing so is better suited for the morally bankrupt, the realist in me acknowledges that bootlegging isn't going anywhere anytime soon.
This turntable still gets my highest reccomendation and I urge any DJ looking into this to go ahead and get one. Pitch control, record manipulation, scratching....it's all there. Once you start scratching, you'll totally forget that it's not vinyl that you're scratching with.

the perfect mid priced turntable
by .. M. Pence (Denton, TX United States)
I couldn't be happier w/ my choice of the SL1200MK5. It's perfect for someone who wants great quality without spending ridiculous money. It's solidly built, and heavy, which just gives it this wonderful feeling of quality and reliability. This thing feels very precise and well thought out. I know that these turntables are the standard for DJs, and that means that they've been tested and refined over the years. They really have figured it out. From the moment I lifted the thing out of the box, I could just tell it was perfect for me. I'm a recording engineer, and wanted to complete my home stereo setup w/ good sounding vinyl. Now I'm spoiled by this thing, and am considering buying one for the studio, just to inspire me to make better sounding recordings. Also, the rubber feet are amazing at squelching vibrations from the floor. You can jump around and shake your booty all night, without records skipping on you, another advantage of it being developed for DJs.
OK, you can tell I love this thing, I've said enough.

Technics Lives On and On....
by .. Armando M. Mesa (Chandler, AZ)
Basically a carryover of the SL 1200 M3D table (1999-2002) with a few friendly DJ minor adjustments (brighter, long life L.E.D. stylus pop up light, more antiskating for non-skipping during scratching and adjustable braking speed)...Is this Technics 'table worth it's weight in gold (I think between 30 to 35 pounds)? Without a doubt !It's built like a Sherman Tank to withstand vibrations from speakers or the dance floor which would otherwise cause the needle to skip around or transfer unwanted noise to the tonearm and out the speakers; an enclosed loop of unwanted noise. Heavy, heavy, construction of the anti-resonant plinth/chasis, platter speaks in volumes about the craftsmanship Technics puts into the "Wheel of Steel". Other than the build quality, what's the sound quality like?It can yield either professional (DJ use), near-audiophile (for that sound purist who wants to just listen to records or transfer to cd-r format) or club-quality scratching top grade sound (the direct drive motor and torque is built Chevy or Ford tough for the use and abuse).
HOWEVER, the sound quality also significantly depends upon the application the 'table is used for, whether you use a cheap $20 cartridge or the serious high quality type. Is this table going to be used for scratching, regular DJing, or just in-home use? All these factors have to be taken into consideration in getting the most out of the MK5. It is illogical to install an audiophile high end cartridge/stylus normally used for casual listening(jazz, classical, some pop/rock) if you're gonna scratch (vice versa). Simple rule of thumb---you use a DJ needle for club play and scratch and a good to excellent high grade cartridge and stylus for normal playback. It is impossible to tell you which cartridges are of substantial quality to high end because it can sometimes boil down to personal individual sound preference (some yield tight bass, some yield clear high frequencies, some sound neutral, musical, or colored---or a combo of these sound qualities)This can be costly and sometimes aggravating to figure out what to use.It takes trial and error and a bit of set up and experimentation and sound comparisons. Oh, yeah, feed the 'table some decently clean-dirt free records. Some will appreciate the dustcover sans hinges. Others would prefer actual hinges for the cover if used mostly at home.As for aesthetics, it's still the same high tech look that came about in 1979 (forget about the regular wood or mdf plinth and chasis look of the '70s so many other manufacturers used (Denon and Pioneer being the exceptions).Technics was way ahead of it's time in 1979 when creating the "looks" for this table. The same design still looks good in it's somewhat contemporary-modern design to this day.
Now listen up Panasonic/ Technics...the ONLY one request that I have is that SOMEDAY you will really and truly upgrade this particular turntable by giving it high end and fully automatic functions or features that so many in home couch potatos crave. Then, if the turntable is to be used in a dj set up, allow the owner to switch off the automatic functions to perform as a manual.Afer all, anyone who knows the history of the Technics 1200 series, this turntable has it's roots in being first designed as an in-home playback system; The clubbing,dj-ing, radio broadcasting applications came about by pure accident or simple choice! I'm not asking for much am I...Technics came close to making this turntable a successful and brilliant automatic with the SL 1700MK2 and the SL 1600MK2 back in the late 70's (semi-automatic,fully automatic). Now and then you will see these beauties on eBay up for grabs(but usually with a" buyer beware, automatic arm does not work" disclaimer. The only design flaw was a belt that controlled the auto return mechanism which would deteriorate after so much use and render the auto function useless (costly repair)...With all the focus on Technics "subtlely" upgrading about every 2 to 4 years the 1200 series they can finally use some of this state of the art modern technology for a high quality automatic/manual with no design or function issues !!!
P.S. I also highly recommend this website on Techics past and present products. It's an unofficial website that carries some awesome information on their turntables at www.vintagetechnics.com. My personal favorites and after owning some of these models over the years is anything in the SL 1200 series, the SL Q3, and the SL-5300 (this one built in 1979 was loaded with all the sweet full automatic features, bells and whistles for it's time---all of it's controls were on the outside of the cover) !
