What to expect at boot camps for youth

One of the more traditional options of treatment for troubled youth is a boot camp, which, just like it sounds, is based on military exercises and expectations. Boot camps for troubled youth can be very helpful for teenagers and young adults who are lying constantly, struggle with low self-esteem, or defy authority to an extreme measure. The idea of a boot camp can be terrifying for struggling teens and even a little scary for their parents and guardians, as it sounds harsh and judgmental. The problem, though, is that most people don't really know what to expect when it comes to one of these boot camps, so here are a few points you should consider while looking into these treatment options for troubled youth. There are also alternatives to boot camps available.

Discipline is Rigid & Consistent

Just like a military boot camp, a boot camp for troubled youth will be extremely well-disciplined. In fact, this is the main reason many troubled youths are sent to boot camp. If your teenager needs to learn that actions and consequences are inherently linked, a boot camp could be a good choice. In a boot camp, swift, militaristic responses to a youth's choices enforce the idea that good decisions are rewarded and bad ones are punished, which teenagers, with their egocentric views of the world, sometimes have troubled understanding.

Physical and Mental Challenges

In today's world of mindless television shows and video games, many times troubled youths are acting out and causing problems out of sheer boredom. Anyone who knows anything about the human psyche knows that boredom is a dangerous destructive force. Humans need challenges in the mental and physical realms in order to feel whole and alive and to function well in society. A boot camp for troubled youth will most certainly challenge your teenager's mind and body, helping her to understand that she is capable of great things, building her general sense of self-esteem, and keeping her out of trouble.

Relationship Building

When a group of people is thrown together in a tough, challenging environment, they normally form much faster and more solid bonds than they would in any other situation. This means that your teenager will be able to make friends at boot camp who may last a lifetime. The best part about this is that the other teens and young adults in the boot camp are likely to understand where your son or daughter is coming from, and this understanding will make these relationships a vital circle of support once your troubled youth comes home.

Short Term Programs Are Noraml

While other troubled youth treatment options span over months or years, a boot camp for troubled youth will only last a few weeks or a couple of months at most. This means that a troubled youth can hopefully resume normal life with a better attitude shortly after a boot camp experience, and it also means that boot camps may be more affordable than other long-term options like residential treatment centers or boarding schools.
