How to Get a Tennessee Marriage License

  • Bride and Groom must appear together at a Tennessee county clerk's office
  • Must have proof of being 18 or older (driver's license, state issued birth certificate, or passport are acceptable forms of ID). If either party is under 18, they must accompanied his/her parents. Those under 16 cannot be married without a court order
  • You must have proof of your Social Security number
  • No blood test or waiting period is required
  • The license must be used within 30 days, and can be used anywhere in Tennessee
  • The fee for the marriage license is approximately $100 (varies slightly by county).

If the couple completes a marriage preparation course within a year of their marriage, and receives a completion certificate, the fee is reduced by $60.

Tennessee Marriage License - Certified Copy for Name Changing

To change your name on your driver's license and with Social Security, you will need a certified copy of your marriage license.

Some counties provide a certifide copy that the officiant signs and leaves with you on the day of your wedding. Others do not. Best bet is to ask the county clerk where you get your license how to get a certified copy.

Some counties are now mailing the couple their certified copy of the marriage license; others do not. Again, you should ask the county clerk's office where you get your license on their policy.
