An excursion to the South Central area of the United States will land you in Texas, where everything, it is said, is bigger. The state itself certainly is, with a geographical area of almost 270 thousand miles. The landscape of Texas varies greatly, depending upon where in the state you happen to be. The Southwest desert area transforms into pine tree laden woods which later give rise to forests filled with oak trees. Eventually the oak forests merge into prairie and finally desert once more in the Big Bend area. In addition to that entire geographical melee, the urban jungles of concrete, steel and glass are perhaps the most striking in the large metropolitan areas of Austin, Houston, Dallas/Fort Worth and San Antonio.

In the early 1900's, Texas began its discovery and refinery of the oil underneath its soil. The oil boom helped establish the state's economic presence and brought great wealth to many, though over the years the Texas oil industry has been substantially diminished as reserves have been tapped. Texas now has its attention turned to space exploration, computer technology and biomedical research, among other things.

The capital of Texas is Austin, with a population of just under 450,000. Austin is an attractive city, with hills and trees and a youthful, trendy attitude as result of its 'college town' status. Voted one of the 'greenest' cities in the nation as well as one of the safest places in the country to live, visitors find Austin to be a laid back, pleasurable experience. Austin is a mecca for live music and indie label bands. It's a place where residents appreciate local businesses and retail outlets over those heavily commercialized chain stores when it comes to shopping. Helotes, Texas is a small town of roughly 4500 residents, located in Bexar County, just outside of the city of San Antonio.
