An investment for the future

Collecting for your children or grandchildren

None of us really need an excuse to collect..we do it because it's seated in our DNA somehow! But when the spouse makes comments about stopping at every estate sale, tell them you're investing in your child's (or grandchild's) future. Someday, they'll have a collection worth many times what you paid for it and can probably use it as collateral for that yacht or vacation home. They may not believe it, but while they're thinking of a snappy comeback, you'll have time to gather up all the goodies at the sale that you can carry.
I used this great excuse to justify buying every plastic bangle bracelet I can find. I love them, the bright colors, unusual carvings, the painted ones, stretch ones, ugly ones. I bought bracelet racks to hang them on, jars to store them in, and took up the entire dresser top with them. When hubby complained that he didn't have a place to put his billfold at night-or money to put in it-I told him in an indignant tone, that this collection was for our then 3 month old granddaughter!
And so they were. I labeled each one-bakelite, lucite, carved, painted, whatever, and gave them all to her mother to keep and maybe display for her. And someday, she will have an impressive collection to display, wear, cherish-and probably sell to buy new blue jeans! But I've had a great time buying them for her!

Vintage sterling jewelry

know your marks!

Sterling silver is made all over the world. But I find that the most unique and wonderful pieces come from the rich heritage of the southwestern part of our continent. There silver is found naturally and has been used by those native Americans to make jewelry for as long as they have had tools to dig up and shape this beautiful metal. If you ever get a chance, visit one of the museums or galleries in New Mexico or Arizona and take a look at the amazing artwork of the Zuni or Navaho craftsmen. And don't mistake that jewelry in the gift shops for the real thing-it's certainly pretty and very collectible. But in these pieces, the styles have been adjusted to fit the taste of the average shopper, to whom the more authentic designs would not be appealing. The bracelet here is a piece of jewelry made for the owner to wear and is a classic Navaho style. It's made with turquoise nuggets from the Sleeping Beauty mine and has wonderful matrix.

And don't forget to look at some of the wonderful Mexican sterling pieces that can be found! In these pieces also, the joyful love of nature and their culture comes through even in their more contemporary pieces.

Gemstones cure everything!

A stone a day....

Forget about spending money on doctors, therapists and counselors..the proper gemstone will cure all your problems!

(not to be taken too seriously, humor only!)

Nearly every stone known to man has had various healing or mystical properties associated with it by the natives of the region in which it is naturally found. After extensive (this morning) research, I have decided that if I just wear enough jewelry, all my problems will be solved. This can work for you too, if you are willing to put forth the effort to find these stones in suitable settings..

For instance, are you stressed out, aggravated at your boss, husband, children? A pretty beaded necklace of onyx and amber will solve this problem and look great at the next Halloween party. Having trouble sleeping? Try a sleep mask decorated in sodalite seedbeads.

Are the kids driving you out of your mind? Try citrine first and learn to go with the flow-but if it's too late for that, get a pretty coral necklace. Even if it doesn't work, you'll look stylish at the nursing home. Or get a great pair of lapis earrings to improve your psychic ability so you'll know what they're up to before the explosion!

For general health, you will need a really varicolored necklace, or maybe a stretch bracelet. A few strands of emeralds, hematite, abalone, rubies and mother of pearl will keep your kidneys and heart strong and your back pain free. Hematite will protect you from radiation damage, and moonstones will keep that reproductive system in great reproducing order (might want to skip that stone!)

If this seems like a lot of rocks to be toting around your neck or wrist, go for an all purpose curative like turquoise. It cures headache, depression, infections, and hearing, as well as protecting you from your teenager's 'evil eye' when you tell them 'No!'

I personally have not tested all of these stones and cannot guarantee their efficacy. I can tell you that there is one stone that I personally know will cure stress immediately. This is the 'worry stone'-any stone cut into a flat slice and grooved out for the thumb. When under stress, simply rub the stone with your thumb. Then throw forcefully at whatever appliance, child, or husband is causing the stress. Works every time.

Vintage plastic jewelry-fun and a bargain!

It's been around a long time..

Plastic jewelry has been around longer than most people realize. As early as the 1930's, bakelite was used to make jewelry, and celluloid was used even before that. As plastics were perfected, designers learned to carve, inject, dye, and generally turn plastic into some pretty wonderful items! By the 1950's, plastic was a part of every woman's wardrobe. There were beads from Japan and later from Western Germany. Every stylish lady had an armload of bangles and 3 strand bead necklaces with matching earrings. Plastic jewelry has grown steadily as a collectible category and there are many guide books available for the novice collector.

This brooch is a piece of reverse carved and painted lucite jewelry, very popular in the middle of the last century. Lucite was one of those materials that was extremely popular because it could be made in such bright colors, and is still used today. It's very durable and pieces made of lucite years ago still hold their color and resist the brittleness that is a problem with many of the other early plastics.
