NOTE !!-- The traditional therapeutic practice of Thai massage should not be confused with the sexual service of the same name that is available in some hotels and brothels.
Massage in America has 'suddenly' become quite mainstream and acceptable. Indeed, one of America's fastest growing service industries is the day spa, which among other services commonly features massage. Massage schools have proliferated across the country. Twenty years ago, who in their right mind would have predicted that massage schools would be in places like Huntington, West Virginia or Fayetteville, Arkansas. Even more amazing is that more and more insurance companies are re-imbursing patients for massage services.
For the majority of Americans, a massage is simply a massage: techniques for rubbing the body for relaxation and stress relief. Practitioners and students of massage and those individuals who have become connoisseurs of massage know that a massage is not simply a massage. Massage encompasses a wide range of techniques. Some massage procedures are not very relaxing, even painful at times. Certain types of massage can be more invigorating and stimulating than relaxing. Various forms of massage utilize hot stones, cold and hot packs and other forms of tools that function to facilitate the therapeutic effects. Other types of massage use no oils or lotions and are given with the client fully clothed. Some massage practitioners apply techniques with their feet, elbows and knees in addition to their hands. Clearly, massage is a many faceted phenomenon.
Thai Massage is referred to by many names in the holistic community some of them include Ancient Thai Massage, Yoga Massage, and in native Thailand it is known as " Nuad Phaen Boran".
The origin of Thai Ancient Massage or " Nuad Phaen Boran " (a type of Thai massage that involves stretching and deep massage) traces back to the time of Yogic and Ayurvedic medicine existing 2500 years ago, at the time of the historical Buddha. The Thai word 'Nuad' means to touch with the intention of imparting healing. The word 'Bo'Rarn', derived from the Sanskrit language, means something that is ancient, sacred and revered. Clearly, the intention is to describe something that encompasses a Western notion of massage, but extends far beyond a description of a series of techniques applied to the surface of the body.
The credit for the development of Thai Massage as a medical practice goes to a famous Indian doctor named Dr Shivago Komarpaj, who was the personal physician of the Buddha and the monks in the monasteries of the time. His name is mentioned in the traditional writings of Theravada Buddism which views him as "the father of medicine".
Through the centuries the monks, who were the practitioners of medicine, transmitted to Thailand both Buddhist practices and Ayurvedic medicine which eventually became an integral part of Thai culture. The generations of experience and knowledge learnt and passed down, through feeling and intuition, has made Thai Massage one of the four principal components of traditional thai medicine, along with nutrition, herbal medicine and spiritual practice. Thai Massage, infact, traditionally incorporates two kinds of meditations: a metta meditation of loving kindness and compassion and a vipassana meditation of insight, which focuses on the receiver's body.
Principles for Giving Thai Massage
Massage is done fully clothed except for bare feet, on a mat on the floor, rather than a raised table.
Wash hands and feet before massage, yours and theirs
After Wai Kru, rub your hands together many times to warm them
Thai massage is done in a meditative manner.
Remove watches and jewelry that can pinch
Check for contraindications, recent illness, surgery, pregnancy, injuries
Begin and end with prayer, usually Om Namo. Honor the teacher.
Pressure is variable depending on the needs
Never hurt the receiver or yourself. Adjust uncomfortable positioning.
Use alternating hand pressing with thumb pressing and palm pressing. Rock your body weight rhythmically.
Don't press on bone. Use thumb circles or finger circles over bony points.
Give energy. Don't cause pain.
Move flowingly and sequentially, rather than jump locations.
Maintain hand contact.
Don't pinch the skin when pulling. Receive massage yourself to know the results of each move.
Honored Pali Prayer
"Pali" is a scriptural and liturgical language of Hinayana (Theravada) Buddhism. "Om Namo Shivago" is a Pali prayer, often sung as a mantra before giving Thai massage to invoke and remember the founder. "Om Namo" is a Pali / Sanskrit word meaning "in the name of, or in remembrance of." Many schools of Thai massage and medicine invoke his memory and blessing by reciting his prayer, every day, twice a day." OM NAMO SHIVAGO SIRASA AHANG KARUNIKO
SAPASATANANG OSATA TIPAMANTANG
PAPASO SURIYA-JANTANG KOMARAPATO PAGASESI WANTAMI BANDITO SUMETASO A-LOKA SUMANAHOMI
PIYO-TEWA MANUSANANG PIYO-PROMA NAMUTAMO
PIYO-NAKA SUPANANANG PINISRIYONG NAMAMIHANG NAMOPUTAYA
NAVON-NAVEAN NASATIT-NASATEAN
A-HIMAMA NAVEAN-NAVE NAPITANG-VEAN NAVEAN-MAHAKO
A-HIMAMA PIYONGMAMA NAMOPUTAYA
NA-A NAVA LOKA PAYATI WINASANTI "
English translation:
" We invite the spirit of our founder,
the Father Doctor "Shivago," who taught us through his saintly life.
Please bring to us the knowledge of nature,
and show us the true medicine in the universe.
Through this prayer, we request your help, that through our hands,
you will bring wholeness and health to the body of our client.
The god of healing dwells in the heavens high
while mankind remains in the world below.
In the name of the founder, may the heavens be reflected in the earth,
so that this healing medicine may encircle the world.
We pray for the one whom we touch, that he will be happy and all pain will be released from them."

Differentiation between Thai and Western massage
Thai Massage aims to realign the energies in the body. Unlike European style, traditional Thai massage focuses on circulation and pressure points, promoting internal health as well as muscular flexibility. However the main differentiation between Thai and Western massage is that Thai Massage involves peripheral stimulating, meaning it acts as an external stimulant to produce specific internal effects within the body.During a traditional Thai massage the masseuse will use their hands, elbows, knees and feet to apply various pressures to the sen (or energy lines) along the body. The sen are taken very seriously in Thailand because they are considered the keys to a happy and healthy life. If a sen becomes blocked, the individual can suffer a range of ailments chronic pain, disease and if left untreated, even death.
Thai Massage identifies 72,000 sen within the human body, 10 of which hold top priority. The freedom of energy through all of the sen within the body will mean perfect harmony and health the ideal mind-body connection.
Thai Massage is practiced on a firm mat on the floor instead of on a massage table. The masseuse will only use their own body weight to apply various pressures to the sen. Except for their feet, the client remains fully clothed during a Thai Massage.
The pressure of a Thai massage is said to differ with each masseuse. Compared to the pressure we are used to in Western massages, Thai may be a bit harder than were used to. Thai massage is often considered too strenuous; however the worst thing a client can do during a Thai massage is tense up in order to fight the pressure of the masseuses stroke. This can damage your muscles and cause unnecessary strain. For the massage to be effective the client must give themselves over to the masseuse, and the masseuse must be able to freely manipulate the clients limbs to encourage blood and lymph flow, and encourage the unblocking of blocked sen.
Thai Traditional Medical Science School and Body Massage
Thai traditional medical science can be found throughout all of the Thai community, with certain cures from herbs and other ingredients. In the old days there were 2 types of doctors: a royal doctor and a local one. At the start of the Rattanakosin period, King Rama III appointed a royal doctor, Phraya Bamroer Rajaphat, as the chief of the doctors to inscribe medical texts on pieces of slate and framed them on columns of the cloisters around the Pra Maha Chedis and in pavilions or Sala Rai.In 1856 King Rama V appointed his royal doctors to translate the great edition of Pali-Sanskrit medical texts into a Thai version;
indexing the books as Medical Science Textbook (Royal Edition); and another on
body massage known as Massage Hand book - Royal Edition. On 30th May, 1962, a council of ancient medical science doctors were approved by Ministry of Health to found Wat Phra Chetuphon Thai Traditional
Medical Science School (Wat Pho) for
Thai traditioanl medical science and body
massage only. This school is located at 2
Sala Rai in the East.
There are 2 kinds of Thai traditional massage science: one is following the contorted hermit postures; and another is herbal massage.
