A film based loosely on the Alphabet Murders in New York

A film based on a true story attracts my interest especially so if it is in the genre of horror or thriller. The Alphabet Killer is one such film. It is based on the Alphabet Murders that took place in Rochester, New York between the years of 1971 and 1973. The killer has never been caught.

Here is my review...

First, the movie, The Alphabet Killer

The Alphabet Killer

A ten year old girl is found brutally murdered outside the small blue-collar city of Rochester, New York, and obsessed police detective Megan Paige (Eliza Dushku of BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER and DOLLHOUSE) suffers a mental breakdown while trying to solve the crime. But when the child-killings resume two years later, Megan's return to the investigation also brings back her own horrific hallucinations.

Review of The Alphabet Killer

It takes a really bad, bad attempt at film-making for me to really dislike a film of one of my favourite genres (namely horror or psychological thrillers) and The Alphabet Killer didn't happen to be one of those.

It also takes a lot for a horror film to scare me, too, though I have to admit to jumping a couple of times whilst watching this. Loud noises and things appearing out of nowhere can usually do that!

Mind you, spooky children tend to be one of those things that creep me out as well as rabid dogs (luckily no dogs were present in this film.) Eliza Dushku is one of my favourite actresses as I'm a great fan of Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Tru Calling which was axed only after one season. So, this film had all the hallmarks of the films I'm more likely to watch.

Although I didn't love this film, I most certainly would purchase it when I get the chance and if it ever comes out on UMD, so much the better. This is one film I would like to watch again some time and I can only do that if I can buy it on UMD.

As I've not researched much into the Alphabet Murders that this film was based on, I couldn't say for sure if it followed closely to the facts or not. Mind you, it does state this it is only loosely based on the murders so it's hard to say which facts are true and which are not.

I liked it! It was thrilling, scary and the plot was good.

Krysteena says:

Well, I think the movie was very interesting! It was intense at times and lame in others. I have to admit, I did jump. It was an amazing movie tho.

I was so freaked out to find out that the killer hasnt been found! So I now I am doing information on it.

Paige says:

Well, I think I liked this movie only because it was based off a ture story. And though that sounds creepy, yes, it also makes the movie (plot) much more believable, and watchable, and it draws you in more. I found myself obsessed Like Megan Paige was. I found myself searching up the Alphabet killer through the web, trying to fit pieces together, and finding nothing. In conclusion, I'm still a little behind and I could be missing some vital information. Like the fact, that the killer is already dead, or caught by now. They say he has yet to be found and the case is "still cold" and I'm guessing, my very little knowledge of police code, that that means the case has been closed till further references. But that just makes me even more curious. I mean, if the killer was about in his either early thirties, mid-thirties, late twenties at least, then that means he is about....70 years old, roughly estimated (I' am by no way a math whiz, so my calculations could be off by a couple of years, but not by much) so that means he is no longer killing young girls with matching initials, which is obviously a good thing!

But, then again, he has not be found and could still be killing, though that is highly negative, due to the fact there has be NO killings of such for those 35 years, so that means, I'm guessing, he has died or is living a normal life still. Either way, I'm pretty sure we're all safe. I'm a girl (16) and I live close to where the killings began. And I got freaked. It's a comfort to know this happened almost 30 years ago.

I liked the movie, and I hated it. It wasn't nearly as scary as I thought it would be, but it did spook me to see dead girls popping out at random moments throughout the film. That was spooky. But I liked it because it was defintitely true.

I recommend it if you happen to enjoy crime/horror films. It will make you jump quite a few times, but no more than that. The ending though has a lot to be desired....check it out. Youw on't be totally dissapointed...

I hated it! Poor acting, poor plot and nothing like the murders it was based on.

mk says:

utterly boring..no convictions on actors part..there are better thrillers out there...

Kathie says:

I lived outside Rochester, New York in Pulneyville during the 70's. I was glad my name didn't have double initials! I hate when they do movies of a time period and screw it all up!! Hello?! There were no cell phones in the early 70's!!!! But the dreary scenery, snow, cold is the real Rochester and why I moved south!!

Lorraine Smyth says:

loathed - very boring -

The Alphabet Killer (Crime)

The so-called "Alphabet murders" (also known as the "double initial murders") took place in the early 1970s in the Rochester, New York area; three young girls were attacked sexually and strangled. The case got its name from the fact that each of the three girls' first and last names started with the same letters (Carmen Colon, Wanda Walkowicz, and Michelle Maenza) and that the bodies were found in towns that started with the same letter as the girls' names (Colon in Churchville, Walkowicz in Webster and Maenza in Macedon).

In Summary

In summary, this film is definitely one to watch if you are a fan of horror or true crime movies. It will certainly not disappoint in that area. It has plenty of potential suspects to keep you guessing for some time, though I can't really say that the true killer is that much of a surprise when you really think about it.
