Oh Holy Angels
Angels were created by God before the creation of man. He created these pure spirits gifted with intellects and wills and called them angels (meaning Messengers). He commanded then into existence Psalms (148,2,5).
The Sacred Scriptures reveals to us about angels and how God used them to interact with the human race throughout the history of mankind.
In this lens we shall get to know about these most beautiful beings that God created and understand how they influence us in our life here on earth.

Nine Choirs of Angels
There are nine Choirs of Angels according to the Old Testament. These are further divided intothree Hierarchies which were shown by Dionysius a 6th century writer in his work Celestial Hierarchy.
The Angels of the first Hierarchy are called Counsellors to God.
The Seraphims are the most glorious of these angels whose faces are eternally turned towards God in adoration and whose name signifies Love and Light.
The Cherubims are the second choir in the first Hierarchy and are also known as Angels of knowledge. They also gaze at God and know his deep insight which they pass to the other choirs beneath them.
The Thrones are the last choir in the first Hierarchy.Their function is as God's throne. They are also known to mete God's judgement and it is from them that all orders are passed to the other choirs.
The Angels of the second Hierarchy are known as Governors.
The first of the Governors are the Dominations who represent God's power. They rule over all the angelic groups and the universe.
The Principalities are the leaders or princes who appoint movements for those under them under the orders of their commander in chief the Dominations.
Lastly under this second Hierarchy are the Powers who are invested with special authority. They remove obstacles which interfere with the execution of Divine commands. They are protectors of mankind and they also banish evil spirits.
The third Hierarchy of Angels are known as God's Messengers.
Here we find the Virtues who signify strength and the invisible courage. They maintain the laws in order and harmony by exercising their power over the world.
The Archangels have two duties. One they fulfill important missions to man on special occasions and two they preside over government of nations, provinces, diocese and religious bodies. They are superiors over Angels .
Finally we have Angels who are the last choir of these pure spirits. These Angels have the most direct contact with humans and it is from this choir that Guardian Angels are selected. They watch over Man from birth to death and obtain for them gifts of light and strength. They are guides, protectors and counsellors. They are a direct link to God as they see the face of God.

A Great Battle of Angels Occurred in Heaven
One of the greatest archangel and the most beautiful of Angels was Lucifer. The very meaning of his name is bearer of light. God gave him charge over the universe and the world. With him God placed an army of Angels who were gifted with powers, knowledge and the free will of His love. After seeing all the powers that God had endowed him Lucifer wanted to be equal or even greater than his Creator.Is14,12-14.One third of his Angels followed him in this revolt and a battle was waged in the heavens.Archangel Michael
offered to lead an army of Angels against Lucifer and his Angels battled with the dragons. Armed with a sword of light Saint Michael led his army with this cry as he uttered to lucifer and his Angels "Who is like unto God?
" which in Hebrew means Mi-KA-EL:Michael. The result of the battle was a victory for Saint Michael. God rewarded him with the highest honour of all Angels that of Prince of Heaven, where he and his Angels entered the everlasting joy of Beatific Vision
Lucifer after this defeat became satan the devil, prince of evil great deceiver and father of all lies. They were banished to a land of misery and darkness where the shadow of death and everlasting horror dwells.job 10,22.

Our Guardian Angels
There is a belief that God has sent each one of us a Guardian Angel to watch over us and be our constant companion. Though the Church does not have this belief as an Article of Faith there has been many instances in the Old and New Testament where we see angels ministering to individuals after being sent by God.While in Matthew 18:10 Jesus actually tell us that children are protected by Guardian Angel "who look continually on the face of my heavenly Father."
The church has given us this prayer to our Guardian Angel which sums it all:
Angel of God, my Guardian Angel
to whom God's love commits me here.
Ever this day/night be at my side
to light and guard, to rule and guide.
Amen.
The feast of the Holy Guardian Angels is celebrated by the Church on October 2.

The Role of Angels on Earth
Angels have been very active in the history of Mankind and God. It was an angel who appeared to Mary on the annunciation of Jesus Christ in Nazareth. An angel again appeared to announce the birth of the Messiah in Bethlehem. It was an angel who consoled Jesus in His agony in the Gardens of Gethsemane. Another angel told the women at the tomb that Christ had risen from the dead. After the ascension of Christ angels appeared telling the disciples that He would come return from Heaven to earth just as he had ascended to from earth to heaven. The Sacred Scriptures is full of stories of angels being sent by God to deliver messages to Mankind.Recently there has been an increase of interest in angels. Most of these people have just discovered for the first time who angels are and what they can do. But angels and devotion to angels has been a long tradition in the Church. Catholics regard Angels as messengers of God who are conscious beings of high intelligence. They are God's creation and must not be adored or placed above Him.
The devotion to the angels took firm roots by the 6th Century. Here St. Benedict and Pope St. Gregory fostered devotion to angels and the devotion reached a height during the Middle Ages. St. Bernard of Clairvaux was especially ardent about the guardian angel. Citing Psalm 90:11, which states, "God has given his angels charge over thee, to keep thee in all thy ways," Bernard advocated lavishing great respect, gratitude and love upon angels.
Most accounts of saints depict their encounters with angels. Saint Gemma Galgani (1878-1903) had a visionary life where she recorded in details in her letters and diaries her conversations with her Guardian angel. She also frequently sent her guardian angel on errands to deliver verbal messages to people far from her, and return with their replies.
This veneration of the angels has led to the founding of confraternities of works of charity or piety.
One such organization is The Opus Sanctorum Angelorum ("The Work of the Holy Angels") a newer Catholic movements intended to renew and bolster belief in Guardian angels, and to foster a collaboration between angels and humans for the glory of God, the salvation of humanity, and the regeneration of all creation.

- Angels in the Hebrew language are referred to as bene elohim, or "sons of God." eventhough they really seem sexless, in scripture they appeared and are referred to as male...a creation by God. I as an artist always found it interesting that in paintings/sculptures/figurines most of the angels are female. Seems there are more females interested in Angels then males, just look at this comment list... Thanks for sharing 5*s
