Practice Of Meditation
The greatest gift to mankind from the most powerful of all " The Mighty Nature" is "Mind". The supreme power of mind for those who unveiled could fathom serenity till eternity through enlightenment.
What is meditation ? It is a state of mind where the mind is focused , concentrated and very powerful. Of course ..... to meditate is difficult , to keep the mind steady for few minutes, few seconds is hard, but through practice and relentless effort the mind can attain peace and focus devoid of external stimuli and influences.
See the quote from Wikipedia ----
"Meditation is a mental discipline by which one attempts to get beyond the reflexive, "thinking" mind into a deeper state of relaxation or awareness. Meditation often involves turning attention to a single point of reference.
It is synonymous to the light of a lamp that does not flicker in a windless place.
"Words of Buddha"-
The entire world is in flames,
the entire world is going up in smoke;
the entire world is burning,
the entire world is vibrating.
But that which does not vibrate or burn,
which is experienced by the noble ones,
where death has no entry--
in that my mind delights.

The Power Of Mind
Mind is Supreme

What is mind ???
Is it a faculty to perceive and diagnose things, cravings, sensations and label them ?
Is it a treaty that co-exists within our body and will perish with the mortal body ?
Is it a supreme some-thing ?
Buddha often peaks about "chitta" and the true nature of chitta is enlightened and peaceful, as the depth of the ocean is calm and clear. But when the mind is in turbulence ( which is quite often the state of a lay man) and emotionally clings to the desires and worries, the mind loses the strength and the healing power, only to get stressed and exhausted with suffering and overexcitement, like the turbulent waves rolling on the surface of the ocean.
Our minds possess the supreme power to heal pain and stress, and to attain peace and joy, by loosening the clinging attitudes that Buddhists call cravings or "trishna". If we apply the mind's healing power and control it without force ( naturally with meditation) , we can heal not only our mental and emotional afflictions, but physical problems also.
The ancient philosophers of the Western origin delved into the "Nature of the Outer World" whereas the ancient sages of the East delved into the "Nature of the Inner World" which is nothing but delving inside the mind .One should become an introvert and seek peace within and not outside. The turbulence and the commotion is inside and all external stimuli are aroused due to the reaction of the inside stimuli ie "mind".
Words of Buddha :-
Mind precedes all phenomena,
mind matters most, everything is mind-made.
If with an impure mind
one performs any action of speech or body,
then suffering will follow that person
as the cartwheel follows the foot of the draught animal.
Mind precedes all phenomena,
mind matters most, everything is mind-made.
If with a pure mind
one performs any action of speech or body,
then happiness will follow that person
as a shadow that never departs.
Meditation for Beginners
Very useful for people who are always tense and stressed. The DVD is divided into three main sections:
* Mindful Yoga: This is a comprehensive 15-minutes Yoga program that highlights the relaxation techniques on relaxing the body with easy postures to relieve the stress.
* Body Scan: This is a 20 minutes, lying-down body awareness exercise in which you move your awareness to various parts of your body by feeling sensations throughout.
* Seated Meditation Postures: This is a 20-minutes guided meditation in which you learn the art of concentration by focusing on the basic breathing technique. This requires you on learning how to keep the mind attentive and relaxed while distractions keep coming.
The breathing technique works quite well especially even if paying attention to your breath tends to make you restless.
How to meditate ?
How many hours should one meditate ?

Guided Mindfulness Meditation
Kabat-Zinn is a renowned researcher in the field of mindful awareness, he really knows what he's talking about. You can indeed reach deep levels of relaxation with his CDs. The sessions are adequately long- 45 minutes to one hour is really required to achieve optimal state of relaxation and mindfulness.
How to meditate ?
There are diffferent techniques of meditating . However, one should practice constructive meditation where only wholesome thoughts are entertained. Evil thoughts and bad feelings should be discarded, for an evil mind too can remain focus but it is a devil's workshop and brings more harm to one-self and others. Five precepts from Buddhism to be followed --
To abstain from killing
To abstain from stealing
To abstain from sexual misconduct
To abstain from making false speech (telling lies)
To abstain from taking intoxicants (alcohol)
One can observe that by following the 5 above mentioned virtues, one can over-power the obstacles easily and thus meditate faster and for long hours.
How many hours should one meditate ?
For the monks , yogis, it is not unusual to meditate for hours and days together. but for lay man one or 2 hours a day is sufficient. It takes several hours of practice and steadfastness to develop concentration.
Vipassana Meditation
The technique and tradition revealed

Vipassana a "Pali word" which means to see things as they really are, is one of India's most ancient techniques of meditation. It was discovered by Goutama Buddha more than 2500 years ago and was taught by him as a universal remedy to eradicate universal suffering.
It is non-sectarian technique that aims for the total eradication of mental impurities and the resultant highest happiness of full liberation. Healing, not merely the curing of diseases, but the essential healing of human suffering, is its purpose.
The essence of Vipassana is to observe the "TRUTH" with no distortions, biases what-so-ever. This technique is maintained in its pristine purity by a chain of monks and is not available through regular Vipassana courses conducted throughout the world.
The technique is taught at ten-day residential courses during which participants follow a prescribed Code of Discipline, learn the basics of the method, and practice sufficiently to experience its beneficial results.
The course requires hard, serious work and a simple code of moral conduct that serves a basis and foundation for the rigorous schedule to calm the mind, which otherwise would be too agitated to perform the task of self-observation.
The next step is to develop some mastery over the mind by learning to fix one's attention on the natural reality of the ever changing flow of breath as it enters and leaves the nostrils called "Ana Pana".
By the fourth day the mind is calmer and more focused, better able to undertake the practice of Vipassana itself: observing sensations throughout the body, understanding their nature, and developing equanimity by learning not to react to them.
Finally, on the last full day participants learn the meditation of loving kindness or goodwill towards all, in which the purity developed during the course is shared with all beings.
Words Of Buddha
Make an island of yourself,
make yourself your refuge;
there is no other refuge.
Make Dhamma your island,
make Dhamma your refuge;
there is no other refuge.
The Art of Living: Vipassana Meditation
Based on the lectures and writings of S. N. Goenka--and prepared under his direct guidance--The Art of Living shows how this technique can be used to solve problems, develop unused potential, and lead a peaceful, productive life. It includes stories by S. N. Goenka, as well as answers to students' questions, that convey a vivid sense of his teaching.
S. N. Goenka's Vipassana courses have attracted thousands of people of every background. Unique among teachers of meditation, Goenka is a well known, retired industrialist and former leader of the Indian Community in Burma. Although a layman, his teaching has won the approval of senior Buddhist monks in Burma, India, and Sri Lanka, a number of whom have taken courses under his guidance.
Despite his magnetism, he has no wish to be a "guru" --instead he teaches self-responsibility. This is a gem of all neditation techniques- The Vipassana meditation ... in the footsteps of Buddha. This is the first systematic study of his teachings to appear in English. - would you be interested in Vipassana.
Dhyana and Samadhi
The Subtle Differences

Is "Dhyana" and "Samadhi" the same ? There are epics and theories on mastering Dhyanas ( 8 types) . To attain Samadhi, dhyana is a stepping stone. By progressing slowly and steadily in dhyanas , one can attain "Samadhi". Samadhi can be understood as a state of deep tranquility .
Words Of Buddha--
Whenever and wherever one encounters
the arising and passing away of the mental-physical structure,
one enjoys bliss and delight,
[which lead on to] the deathless stage experienced by the wise.
