MY REVIEW -- A must-read book by Guy Kawasaki

The Art of the Start is a must-read book that I am recommending to all Squidoo lensmasters and to all of you who want to, well start something. This is THE book that I first read in October 2004 when I made the decision to leave a Fortune 100 company as their Marketing Manager to establish my sole proprietorship and become more of an entrepreneur. Back then, I took the time to also attend Guy Kawasaki's webinar -- he impressed me then -- and he continues to impress me today. If you've seen him on twitter, you know that is he one prolific guy!

Well, I'm entering a new phase of my life and am ready to start something new -- so, I've blown the dust off this book and have begun to read it again!

Kawasaki (Rules for Revolutionaries) draws upon his dual background as an evangelist for Apple's Macintosh computer and as a Silicon Valley venture capitalist in this how-to for launching any type of business project. Each chapter begins with "GIST" ("great ideas for starting things"), covering a variety of facets to consider, from identifying your customer base and writing a business plan to establishing partnerships and building brand identity.

Minichapters zero in on particular jobs that will need doing, while FAQ sections address the questions readers are most likely to have: Kawasaki covers the basics in an effectively casual tone. Much of the advice, however, consists of generic banalities-start your company's name with a letter that comes early in the alphabet, use big type in presentation slides for older businessmen with declining eyesight, and avoid writing e-mails in all capital letters-that can be found in any mediocre guide. Fortunately, Kawasaki does rise to the occasion here and there. He goes into great detail when it comes to raising capital and offers effective methods for sorting through the nonsense associated with interviewing prospective employees.

OK -- let me start this debate! I'm a big fan of Guy Kawasaki -- first started reading this book and following him in September 2004 or maybe a little earlier. He's quite impressive in his prolific appearance on twitter!

I actually prefer ... Seth Godin!

JaguarJulie says:

And, I am a woman -- so I can have differing opinions depending upon the question and time of day! I first started reading Seth Godin in July 2000 and came to Squidoo in March 2006. I would love to see Guy Kawasaki and Seth Godin in a cowebinar!
