The Canberra Raiders Rugby League Football Team

The Canberra Raiders are a rugby league club based in Canberra, Australian Capital Territory, Australia.
Canberra joined the New South Wales Rugby League competition in 1982 when rugby league was being expanded out of Sydney. The Illawarra Steelers also joined at the same time.
They are presently part of the National Rugby League (NRL) playing in the Telstra Premiership competition.
The Canberra Raiders have to compete for support, as the popular rugby union team The Brumbies are also based in Canberra.

The Canberra Raiders

Canberra Raiders joined the NSWRL in 1982. Their first year was not too good as they finished in last place taking the wooden spoon.
They have the dubious honour of conceding the most tries in a season (1982).
Their first win was in their eighth game against Newtown, winning 12-11.

Canberra was the first non-Sydney team to make the finals (1984), to take part in a grand-final (1987), and to win a premiership (1984).

In a span of eight years, they played in four grand finals and won three premierships.

In 1997, Canberra was one of the teams that joined the Super League competition.
They re-joined the ARL in 1998.
