The Different Types Of Tanning Lotion
Ranked #52,657 in Healthy Living, #619,633 overall
Excessive sun exposure is known to cause severe damage to human skin, making it prone to problems like cancer and inflammation. Keeping this aspect in view, scientists have developed tanning lotion that offer the same natural glow as sun tan, devoid of any harm. Selecting a self tanner is a matter of individual choice. It depends mainly upon the kind of darkness one requires, application method, as well as washability.
The word "tanning lotion" could also be used to refer to products which are applied to encourage sun tanning, but today the term normally applies to lotions that lead to tanning.
Composition of Tan Lotion

Almost all tanning lotions consist of DHA or dihydroxyacetone, which is known to be a carbohydrate (like sugar). It reacts with the dead cells of the body and makes them brown. Dihydroxyacetone is a very popular ingredient used by almost every manufacturer. Normally, the more the quantity of DHA in a lotion, the darker the effect it will have on the skin. Remember, it is good to wash hands with water after slithering any kind of tanning lotion on the body. This is to avoid getting the palms orange.
Also, it's quite important to know that uneven skin might not tan the right way no matter what kind of lotion or spray is used.

Types of Tanners Available

Moisturizers: The most common type of tanner comes in the form of moisturizing lotion which has to be applied daily for a long lasting effect. If used on a regular basis, the lotion will keep the skin moist while deepening the color. The effects are normally visible in days and the right color is achieved in a week's time. These tanning lotions can provide a good color and do not cause orange streaks.
Instant Tan- Sprays, Gels, and lotions: Other kinds of self tanners are the ones that offer an instant effect. These are available in lotion, gel or spray form, and are always applied evenly over the skin. The results are normally seen in a matter of minutes or a couple of hours (depending upon the brand). This type of tanning lotion may produce tan that may vary from bronze to ultra dark.
Most companies offer an exfoliating scrub with these tanners, which is generally used before the tanning solution is applied. The scrub is made up of rich vitamins and natural ingredients. These ingredients help wipe off dead cells, and revitalize the skin to get it ready for self tanning.
Most salons use instant tanning sprays on customers to give them the skin they want. The advantage of using sprays over lotions is that they create no mess, do not clog the pores, make no streaks, and contain no dye that may stick onto the clothes. People who use spray tan normally prefer it over bronzers or other lotions.
Although, most of these solutions contain sunscreen, but if they don't, it's important to use one separately each day to avert burns or skin cancer. It's also important to use products from known brands, such as Sun Laboratories. This is because using cheap or local products can cause permanent, irreparable skin damage, which is not good.
