The General Lee Car an Auto Icon

The General Lee car may likely be one of the most famous television cars of all time. People with pride in the south loved the rebel flag background on the roof. Not to mention Bo and Luke Duke were the epitome of easy on the eyes country boys. Young girls across America would flock to their TV sets in droves to see the dimpled duo take on Rosco and Flash in several heated chase scenes. Boys dug Daisy in her signature "Daisy Dukes," nylons, and high heels. She could ride with the best of the boys on the show!

For replicas, the General Lee car may very well be the one vehicle that appears over and over again in car shows, body shops, and even in backyard mechanic shops across the country. Men and even some women have went out of their way across the nation to duplicate the ostentatiously orange overdrive auto. John Schneider himself has taken to the idea of selling his replica of it on EBay for $10 million. Some would argue it doesn't seem right that he's selling off his car, kind of like a cowboy selling off his horse. But, $10 million is hard to turn down even for nostalgia.

Ben Jones who played "Crazy Cooter" on the show has a nostalgia shop for the show in both Gatlinburg
and Nashville, TN. A general lee car sits proudly among other vintage vestments such as Cooter's famous tow truck. People come from miles around to see the beloved car and items of interest from the show in his museum. The car may well be more famous than any other to hit TV or silver screen during the 20th century.

Even if you don't want a full scale model, but you love the General Lee car there are other options. There are many models of various sizes at hobby stores and on the Internet. Alot of the die cast models can either be painted or they can be purchased pre-painted. Then, there's always the idea of seeking out memorabilia such as lunch boxes, big wheels, and toys from the era that bear the resemblance of the 1980's icon of american autos.

The General Lee Generates Fond Memories

If you were a fan of Friday night TV in the 1980's, at some point you had to have watched "The Dukes of Hazzard". Better yet if you were a huge fan of muscles cars from the 1960's, you really dug the General Lee. Or you may have cried bitter tears every time one of these babies was demolished on the show. Hundreds of the 1969 Dodge Chargers suffered the cruel fate of the outlandish car chases on the show, thanks to Boss Hogg and his half-witted accomplice Sheriff Rosco P. Cotrain.

A replica of the General Lee is unmistakable, the bright orange paint job, the black 01 on the door, and a rebel flag proudly painted across the outside of the roof. If it's the real deal, the doors will be soldered shut, and you will have to slide through the window like you're all that.

The car was the hope and dream of many a little boy (and some girls) that religiously watched the show. Kids had a fervor for the show that would send many a hassled parent out of the mall or any other such activity to make it back in time to see the good 'ole Duke boys. Many a kid in my neighborhood converted their banana seated bike or if you were real cool, your ten speed into the General Lee or Daisy's Jeep. Yes, we lacked a driver's license and the Charger to go with it, but we could dream that we were part of one of the exciting chase scenes. We bugged our parents incessantly for the latest in fandom wear that showed we were the die hard fans. If you're thinking "you must be a redneck," we were just your average Midwest kids from a mid size city. It never occurred to us that we were rednecks since that term really wasn't thrown around in the 1980's Midwest region. Our zeal for the show was born from a passion for fast cars. To this day, reruns of the show bring a smile to my face, and the horn of that bright orange beauty is music to my ears. It plays a tune from my childhood, one I'll never forget.
