The Importance of MBA

President George W. Bush is the very first President to hold a Masters Degree in Business Administration MBA. What's more, he got it from one of the best and most prestigious MBA schools, Harvard Business School. Wonder why is it so little reported? HBS must be extremely proud to be the school to produce the first MBA President! Wonder if the two termed President will want to tell us if he had used what he had learned from his course to govern USA. This will surely be a very interesting talk.

Is MBA important? Frankly speaking the higher ended or at least higher middle management jobs mostly require an MBA, better still from one of the prestigious MBA schools listed by say Financial Times etc. An MBA normally serves as a stepping stone to higher career aspirations. Hence you can see MBA courses aren't cheap.

But given the scandals in the banks, publicly listed companies, the ponzi schemes and whatsoever becoming so ever common whenever you open your newspapers or news web site, I wonder if you have the sort of feelings that, though we need financial or management talents, we require something extra from these people. That extra is known as Ethics! Having been to an MBA myself, I feel that maybe a revamp of the typical curriculum to include Ethics and Social Responsibilities is a must so that we do not just have geniuses out to cheat us of our money but geniuses with a feel for society and a responsibility for society.

What do you Study in MBA

What do you study in MBA that results for eg in such a fantastic two terms President like George Bush? Well MBA is more of a terminal degree. You do not use it as a jumping board to a PhD for eg. It is normally for aspiring managers or those wanting to do a mid life change in career to finance or banking. There is also another type of MBA, the Executive MBA, which I consider a Card Changer MBA, you exchange your name cards with your fellow illustrious classmates in the hope of enlarging your business associates circle as as well contacts, thats about it. But of course such relationship building has a lot of advantages. Take the well known MBA schools, their alumni are basically a list of Who's Who's in the echelon of society. Hence being associated with them has its privileges. Membership has its privileges. Studies wise, I don't really think that it is that rigorous. More towards learning of the management theories and so on, nothing difficult. You will be really hard up if you manage to fail your MBA, no joke, I guess no one, or nearly no one fails their MBA, unless they really tried very hard. For me I took my MBA as a sabbatical, more of relaxing rather than working. You can't tell friends you are relaxing for two years, better to tell them that you took two years off to take your MBA!

How do you Choose an MBA

How you choose an MBA depends on your aims with regards to getting that MBA. Do you intend to gain from the knowledge of the MBA course? Or are you looking forward to network with your fellow MBA friends? Basically I think these are the two main reasons why you are going for an MBA, to learn something so that you can have a career change or a career lift or to network with your MBA cohort. Whatever the reasons, reputation is extremely important for the MBA school you are going into. Bear in mind that MBA degrees aren't cheap. They are not meant to be cheap. Look at the Financial Times ranking, they are more or less the authority with regards to the reputation of the school. Get the best ranked school which you can afford or you can enter. They make a real difference. Being from Harvard Business School beats an MBA from a normal regionally accredited university or state university by a mile! Of course fees wise also differ by that sort of distance. Make sure you get what you want in the end. If you want knowledge, make sure you get the correct courses and if you want to network, make sure you attend the classes and prepare the name cards. My advice is simple, choose the very best that you can afford directly from the ranking because these will be what your prospective employers will be looking at.

Preparation for MBA

So you have decided to take this huge step towards getting an MBA degree from the most prestigious Business School that you can afford? What's the next? You will want to know how do you proceed. Of course, firstly get the application forms and stuff like that will constitute the first moves. But we are talking about the preparation not just to enter the MBA but life during the studies. For MBA it is better to take it full time as you need to exchange name cards and network as much as you can, whether you intend to gain knowledge or otherwise, networking is an important part of MBA.

You will need to consider the opportunity cost wasted. An MBA typically take about 1 - 2 years. Your loss of income is one thing. The tuition fees for MBA is another. How to feed your family and yourself during that interval is a third. Once you have everything thought out and your bank balances healthy. You may want to consider how to prepare to get in. Seriously MBA do not need you to be a Bachelor of Business Administration, you can be anything. Engineering degree, Science degree or whatever. But most respected MBA schools will want you to take the GMAT. You need to have a decent score to enter the school of your choice. So cram hard at it, it is something akin to the SAT tests which we took as undergraduate testing verbal and quantitative skills with a score ranging from 200 to 800. There is also an analytical writing section. Once you have taken the GMAT, submit your application and wait for your admission results. I will advice you to apply to a few MBA schools just in case. Unless of course you are superbly confident of your ability to get to your first choice.

Honest Abe

I am not bound to win, but I am bound to be true. I am not bound to succeed, but I am bound to live by the light that I have. I must stand with anybody that stands right, and stand with him while he is right, and part with him when he goes wrong.

What the MBA does not Teach You

So hopefully with everything prepared, you are now The MBA student, hoping that career fortunes shine upon you when you graduated. What I will like to tell you now is What MBA Schools does not teach which is what you should learn too! We have seen our fair share of financial dishonesty and with CEOs under such short terms, most just gamble for immediate gains to fatten their pay checks before leaving. Long terms profitability and accountability to the share holders are thrown to the winds. We have tax evaders becoming Secretary of Treasury because of a "lack of time" and "urgency of issues". Why not ask Japan General Yamashita Tomoyuki "The Tiger of Malaya" to be the Secretary of State? I guess he would be very diplomatic.

I feel that MBA schools even look for new and innovative stuff to teach for example Sun Tze's Art of War and Tao Zhu Gong's Jin Shang Bao Dian. But they seemed blinded to the social ills. We need to teach something that is very fundamental "Honesty and Integrity", Corporate and Social Responsibilities! Well there is one of two modules on this but there better be more given the fraud cases and CEOs fattening themselves on millions of dollars of bonuses even when the companies need tax payers money to survive. Without Honesty and Integrity, even the smartest managers and CEOs should be condemned to the trash bins of history. This is something we need to look upon in the MBA. Do try to look for more Corporate Responsibilities, Compliance courses. I feel that we will need them very soon if not now! Not just getting a good grade for the module but ensure what you practiced what you learn! Look at General Yamashita - the friendly, charming and perfect Top Diplomat for USA! Need China to subscribe another $600 billion of T Bonds? No problem! Yamashita will get it done in a jiffy! The Chinese may not even need any bonds just paying you $600 billion for thin air! I guess Obama's Administration really had it right with George Orwell's

War is Peace
Freedom is Slavery
Ignorance is Strength

My strongest advice for potential MBA students. Going to MBA to enhance your career to earn more money is good! But take this break from your job, try to learn to be a Gentleman, a man of Honesty and Integrity. Remember Honest Abe, do not be like Slicky Willy!
