The Mythbusters - Blowing things up for Science!
The Mythbusters are a group of geeks testing and debunking urban legends, fan hype and conventional wisdom in rather spectacular fashion. In short, things blow up. It's one of my favorite shows because it's a great mix of entertainment and information.
Mythbusters Procedures
This is how the Mythbusters test Myths
1. Target a Myth - The Mythbusters choose one myth from any number of sources. In the early seasons they started with urban legends then branched out to Hollywood myths, Conspiracy Theories and even Home Remedies. Recently they've been listening to the fan suggestions over their website.
2. Copy the Myth - They try to replicate the circumstances of the myth as closely as possible. If the myth says a compact car was pancaked between a couple of 10 wheelers, they will obtain the said vehicles before smashing them. Of course some things are just to difficult to test exactly... like the Moon Landing conspiracy theory episode. In those cases a close approximation is used.
3. Copy the Result - More often, the test will show different results from the myth. When this happens the Mythbusters try to replicate the results of the myth. The reasoning is that they want to show us what it takes to get a desired outcome. This helps illustrate just how ludicrous or real are the stories.
4. Three Verdicts - After testing they decide if the myth is busted (not true at all), plausible (partly true) or confirmed(is true).

and some things can't be busted
The Mythbusters are known for their spectacular tests of popular legends and stories. Most often science proves that these stories are just impossible. On rare occasions, the Mythbusters learn that some preposterous sounding myths are actually true. My favorite jaw-dropping moment of truth was the mice vs elephants myth.

Mythbusters Classic: The Lead Balloon
Remember the saying "go over like a lead balloon" or "go down like a lead balloon"? It's not true. A Lead Balloon Can Float... although it takes a tremendous amount of effort to make one! So here is the Lead Balloon myth from the Mythbusters' idiomatic expressions episode, where they test common expressions and colloquialisms.
