The Newcastle Knights Rugby League Football Club
The Newcastle Knights Rugby League Football Club is a professional football club based in Newcastle which is north of Sydney.
Newcastle joined the competition in 1988 and have a huge support base in their city with home games well attended.
They wear the colours of red and blue and play their home games at EnergyAustralia Stadium in Newcastle.
The Newcastle Knights
The Newcastle Knights have won two premierships in 1997 and 2001.Their first coach was Allan McMahon and the team started well making the finals in 1990. During the Super League war Newcastle stayed loyal to the Australian Rugby League (ARL).
Between 1997 and 2003 Newcastle made the finals every season.
They won the 1997 grand final versus Manly 22-16.
Robbie O'Davis won the Clive Churchill Medal.
Newcastle's biggest employer BHP Steelworks closed that year, so the grand final win was a big boost for the people of Newcastle. Most of the players in the winning squad were local juniors.
In 2001 Newcastle beat the Parramatta Eels in the grand final. The score was 30-24 after Newcastle were leading 24-0 at half time. Andrew Johns won the Clive Churchill Medal. Andrew Johns also won the Dally M best player two years in a row 1998 and 1999. A third Dally M was won in 2002.
Andrew Johns also won the Provan-Summons Medal four years in a row 1998 - 2001.

2004 and 2005 were not good years with the club having a lot of players out with injuries.
Then in 2007 coach Michael Hagan went to Parramatta and Parramatta's coach Brian Smith went to Newcastle.
2007 was a bad year for the club with turmoil on and off the field. Many players left the club and captain Andrew Johns retired.
2008 was a year of improvement and the club finished just out of the eight and missed the finals.
2009 the Knights finished in 7th position on the table and made the finals.
Lost against the Bulldogs in the first final, which ended the season for them.

- Newcastle is a great Rugby League city and the Knights have a huge following there. They are getting their stadium redeveloped too, which should be great for the future.
It's strange - I really liked them after they won the Grand Final against Manly in 1997, but haven't really liked them since they beat Parramatta in 2001.
