The Parramatta Eels Rugby League Football Club
The Parramatta Eels Rugby League Football Club is based in the western Sydney city of Parramatta. Parramatta was accepted into the New South Wales rugby league premiership in 1946 and entered a first grade side into the 1947 competition.
They had most success during the early 1980's and their huge fan base is hoping for a premiership win after coming runners up in 2009. We are hoping that the drought is about to break in more ways than one.
There are two things on my wish list for this year.
1. Some decent rainfall
2. A 2010 premiership win for the Parramatta Eels. We have waited long enough, my children have grown up without their team winning a premiership.

Today my beloved Parramatta lost the grand final to Melbourne. The party was ruined by a ruthless storm from the south. The tears are still flowing and this loss hurts more than all the other losses over the past 23 years! I had to control my tears for 12 hours as I had to work a long night shift from 7pm.
The score was 23-16, with the Storm leading 10-0 at half time.
Billy Slater won the Clive Churchill medal which was like rubbing salt into the wounds.
Try scorers for Melbourne were:- Ryan Hoffman, Adam Blair, Greg Inglis, Billy Slater. Cameron Smith scored 3 from 4 conversions. Greg Inglis scored a field goal.

Tonight 1000's of Eels fans turned up at Parramatta Stadium to watch an open training session as the Eels prepare for the Grand Final against the Storm next Sunday. Skipper Nathan Cayless was absent from training as he is resting a hamstring injury and will undertake a fitness test on Saturday to see if he can take his place in the Grand Final team.
Sunday 27th September, 2009
Jarryd Hayne and Matty Keating will be able to play in next week's Grand Final after they were both charged with Grade one contact offences. The match review panel met today and said both players would be able to play if they take an early guilty plea. This is a huge relief for the the players, the club and the supporters. It would have been tragic for these players to miss out on a grand final appearance.
Jarryd Hayne will sign a four year $2,000,000 deal to stay with Parramatta.
Saturday 26th September, 2009
The Storm defeated the Broncos 40-10 tonight in Melbourne. They will now play against Parramatta in the Grand Final next week. The Storm will be extremely difficult to beat next week as their form is just amazing. The are definately the team of the decade. This will be their fourth Grand Final in a row, winnng in 2007.
Friday 25th September, 2009
The Parramatta Eels have made it into the Grand Final after defeating the Bulldogs 22-12 in the 3rd week of finals tonight at ANZ Stadium in Sydney.
A record crowd, the biggest crowd ever for a non grand final match turned out to support these two Sydney-based teams.
Two Parramatta players have been put on report including star player and Dally M Player of the Year Jarryd Hayne.
It would be an enormous blow for Jarryd, Parramatta and Rugby League in general if he is suspended for his first ever Grand Final. Jarryd Hayne is such a crowd puller and has lifted the game of rugby league to new heights.
Fingers crossed that he is let off with a warning.
Another blow to Parramatta is the injury to their Skipper Nathan Cayless.
He has a hamstring injury and will have treatment all week to get fit for the Grand Final.
Storm and Brisbane Broncos play tomorrow to decide the other grand final spot.
Friday 18th September, 2009.
Parramatta had a strong win over the Gold Coast Titans in the first semi-final of the NRL series. In front of a crowd of 28,524 at the Sydney Football Stadium. It was a good defensive game again from Parramatta winning 27-2. Daniel Mortimer missed most of the game after being injured in the first 3 minutes after being hit whilst placing a kick. He has a hip injury and hopefully will be recovered enough to play in next week's blockbuster against the Bulldogs at ANZ Stadium next Friday night.
Parramatta tries to Kingston, Mateo, Smith and Wright. Luke Burt was in his usual fine form and kicked five goals. Jarryd Hayne kicked a field goal.
FuiFui Moimoi was named Man of the Match
Refs were:- Shayne Hayne and Jared Maxwell
Congratulations to Jarryd Hayne on being named Dally M Player Of the Year 2009!
Parra Eels finish the season in 8th position, and will have to play Minor Premiers St. George again in the first week of finals. They lost in a big way against St George last week 37-0 at WIN Jubilee Stadium at Kogarah. Kogarah is again the venue for this week's game as St. George have the home ground advantage. The NRL asked the Dragons to consider moving the game to a bigger stadium to accommodate another 20,000 fans. They were offered a large financial incentive to do this, but declined.
Finals Week 1 Sunday 13th September 2009
St George v Parramatta
Venue: WIN Jubilee Stadium at Kogarah
In an amazing turnaround from last week, the Parramatta Eels defeated St. George Dragons at Kogarah 12-25. They achieved this with only 48% possession.
This was a sensational win over the Minor Premiers. Parramatta now continue on and will play The Jetstar Gold Coast Titans in Sydney at the Sydney Football Stadium next Friday night 18th September.
St George will now travel to Brisbane to play the Broncos who are in sizzling form.
Parramatta's win also means that Manly's season is now over.
The return of Eric Grothe and Nathan Hindmarsh strengthened the team and they had a great defensive game against the Dragons.
The Eels led 12-08 at half time after tries by Luke Burt and Daniel Mortimer. Dan Hunt score a try for the Dragons in the 37th minute. In the 61st minute, Eric Grothe took an intercept and ran almost 80 metres to score under the posts. Brett Morris score for the Dragons in the 70th minute. A magnificent field goal from way out by Luke Burt sealed the game for the Eels in the second half. Then Jarryd Hayne scored a superb solo try just before full time. He is such an amazing player!
Krisnan Inu may return to the team for next week's game if he recovers well from a hamstring strain.

Early History of Parramatta Rugby League Club

Parramatta Rugby club was formed in 1879. In 1900 the club merged with Western Suburbs to play in the Sydney district competition. The home ground was Cumberland Oval.
A district rugby league competition was started in 1909.
Other clubs were formed throughout the district.
In 1936 Parramatta put forward a proposal to join the New South Wales Rugby League Premiership competition. The only club to accept the proposal was Western Suburbs and they were the club that would lose the most if Parramatta joined. The proposal was rejected. Further plans to pursue entry into the competition were put on hold by the start of World War II.
In 1946 after the war was over, Parramatta again applied for entry into the competition. This time they were accepted.
The first premiership match was played against Newtown at Cumberland Oval on 12th April 1947 in front of a crowd of about 6,000. Parramatta lost 12-34.
They wore blue jerseys with a gold hoops around the middle and across the sleeves and white pants.
Parramatta were not very successful in the early years, becoming wooden spooners six years in a row between 1956 and 1961. They made the finals in 1962 to 1965. Wooden spooners again in 1970.
Their first success was in 1976 when they won the Pre-Season cup beating Manly-Warringah in the final.
The early nickname for Parramatta was 'The Fruitpickers' because of all the orchards in the district at that time.
In the 1960's rugby league journalist Peter Frilingos suggested that Parramatta should be called 'The Eels'. The word Parramatta comes from the aboriginal word Barramattagal which means 'place where the eels dwell'.
'The Eels' was officially adopted in the 1970's.

The early 1980's was the most successful time for the Parramatta Eels, appearing in five grand finals and winning four premierships.
1981 - 1983 Won three grand finals in a row.
1984 - lost the grand final to Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs 6-4.

Change of club crest
The Original club crest was an aboriginal hunter spearing a fish. This was changed in 1980 to a design featuring an eel.
The eel design was changed again in 1999 and again in 2005.
Parramatta Stadium
Parramatta played at Cumberland Oval until 1981 when they won their first premiership. The last match played there was against Manly (I was there too!).After the premiership win the grandstand which was to be demolished was burnt down. (I was there too but I didn't do it - I was in the club celebrating)
During the 1982 - 1985 seasons Parramatta used Belmore oval as a temporary home ground while the new stadium was being built on Cumberland oval.
The stadium was going to be much larger than it is but this was stopped by the 'Friends of Parramatta Park' who protested loudly over the development.
The first match played at the new stadium was on 16th March 1986. Parramatta won 36-6 over St George. The capacity of the stadium is only 20,000. It did have a larger capacity before the hilled areas were filled with seats.
The largest crowd at the old Cumberland oval was 22,470 on 26th April 1971 when Parramatta played South Sydney.
The largest crowd at the new stadium was 27,243 on the 17th August 1986 when Parramatta played South Sydney.
The largest crowd since the seating of the hill area was 21,141 in 2006 when Parramatta played West Tigers.
