The Herb Parlor AKA Listening To Your Herbs
AND this is a partially channeled lens from my herbs. The other parts are from me because I'm a spiritual minister trained to teach meditation.
If you'd like to learn to work with your herbs on a more spiritual level, read on.
We are what we eat. Why not learn how to make sure you're nourishing yourself with "friendly" energy.
Funny story...I came home from work one day and stopped at The Herb Parlor...an area by my house with a large pine tree where I have my herb pots...I started talking to the new basil plant...said, "Hi, Mr. Basil, how are you today?". Very quickly and loudly I heard, "ANDROGYNOUS". Well, with that loud and strong comment...I took notice...androgynous is not a word I use every day but I certainly know what it means. I laughed and the basil plant "agreed" that it was okay to call it "Mr." as long as I knew there is no gender designation for that herb. From that moment, we became "friends".
How did I get to the point that I can hear my herbs? Through meditation.
Listen To Your Food
It Talks To You
How?
"Taste" the ingredient in your imagination...then ask, "what fresh herb do you want? Listen or better yet "taste", one at a time, a variety of fresh herbs with that item. Which one...to you...after all you're the one cooking...tastes the best.
Go out into your garden to that herb. Be sure to ask the herb if it's okay to use it, if agreeable, allow it to tell you which stems to pick. Be sure to thank the plant for agreeing to nourish you.
Happy cooking.
From Meditation To Talking With Herbs
From There to Here...
At the time, i had no interest in learning about medicinal herbs. He proceeded to give me Latin terms for what he was showing me. I don't know Latin and almost flunked French. I wrote them down anyway the best I could. (Sure glad I had my journal with me during this class. Oh yes, that's another whole story - Why I had my journal with me.) When I got home, I immediately went to my computer and looked for some of these terms...what a shock.
The plants he was naming are all the herb versions for the medications I was taking at the time. One I remember distinctly was Verbascum...Mullein...good for lung congestion as an expectorant. I had a cold at the time so I tried the Mullein oil. Wow, it certainly worked better than the medications I was using. I trust him now completely when he has something to say to me.
Okay, okay...on to the instructions.
The first step is to learn meditation...
Fluffy Joy Thyme
AKA #4
Have you ever just looked at an herb and you start giggling and laughing. This herb can do that to you. One look and you can't help but laugh and giggle. Touch it and the laughter intensifies, then you start feeling the love. It opens its "heart" to you and the love is overwhelming. It just "smiles" and lets you know it will be good in the food you prepare. It really doesn't have to say anything. It just is.
End of Growing Season...
...can't wait for the next one.
Well the amount of water to keep the tomatoes going in this hot weather outweighed the quality of the "few" remaining tomatoes. I say "few" because there were a good many on the vine but they were small and hard.
I cleaned most of the pots over the weekend. It is really hot here now...our rains have not started yet. July can be really bad with the heat and no rained to cool Earth Mother not to mention ourselves. When the rains start it is more like a steam sauna BUT it does feel a bit cooler than before the rains. Maybe we just get used to the heat...NOT.
I'm going to do the cucumbers in the fall along with adding back a few of the herbs I'm missing because of the heat. Need to finish cleaning my few remaining pots though.
When I start up in the fall, I'll keep you posted.
Many Miracles, Patricia
This Deserves A Separate Section...
Some explanations.
I received a phone call from a friend in Kansas yesterday. Her question was, "exactly how do you talk to your herbs?" I explained, it is the same as when you talk to your pet without words or hand jestures. It is clearing the brain of chatter and opening your heart to unconditional love. I also sit with my herbs everyday and just listen and respond. I also "hug" my plants by putting either my hands loosely around them or my arms if it is a bigger plant. I do Reiki and I Reiki my plants also. The unconditional love is the important thing here, even if they seem to be fussing. One other thing, if at all possible, even if it seems not logical, accommodate them with their requests. You'll be happy you did.
One thing I forgot to mention. Always, always ask when you need some of their leaves or flowers. Let them tell you which to use. I did that one time with out asking and everything that could go wrong with my recipe did go wrong. When I listen to the herbs, my recipes turn out awesome.
Thank you Jenny!
Cucumber and Tomatoes anyone?
New this year....
It's getting toward the end of growing season here in Florida for the cucumbers and tomatoes we had.
The cucumbers were absolutely awesome...little seeds and a "young" taste. We will definitely be having more of them. They were the "Bush Crop" cucumbers. We ate them with tomatoes and sweet onions with a Vinaigrette dressing. YUMMY!
We are still getting a few very sweet "Moby Grape" tomatoes off the plant. I have to pick them about a day or so before they are completely ripe. The birds and squirrels like them too. I don't like doing that. Next season (we have 2 growing seasons for tomatoes) I'll make a tent for them out of screening to keep them safe and ripen on the vine. The "Moby Grapes" are really good eating.
Garlic Or Onion Any One?
A Surpise Addition To The Herb Parlor....
You may read about them just below.
Baby onion on the left and baby garlic (#1, #2, #3, & #4) on the right.
Onion and Garlic A Bit Older....
They Grow So Fast in Florida.
Garlic on the left. Garlic and onion under the living room window on the right. The onion is the second little plant from the left.
Posted February 26, 2011
It's been about 4 -5 weeks now. My housemate pulled out a culture from the refrigerator and it had these "thingies" growing from it. I figured they were roots to something. Asked her not to throw it away...I'll plant it. After about a week, I got tired of looking at it on the table. I looked at it took it apart...oh yes, it used to be a garlic bulb. I decided to go ahead and plant the cloves. It wouldn't hurt to plant a couple of them...after all there was an empty pot with dirt in it left over from my tomato adventure last year. I investigated a bit on the internet to know how deep and how far apart to plant garlic. I took 2 cloves out and pushed them into the dirt in the pot.
A few days later I saw they were growing and I put 2 more cloves in the pot. A day or 2 later when I came home from work, #3 & #4 had popped out of the dirt about a half inch or so. The next morning 3 & 4 were about 2 & 3 inches out of the ground. My eyes got big and I didn't know garlic grew so fast in Florida. Mean while #1 & #2 were getting bigger and bigger at about 6 - 7 inches. After work I put the other 4 cloves I had in the ground by the living room window, marked the spot with twigs and watered. These under the window did not have sprouts on them like the first 4 did. They took about 4 - 5 days for 5 & 6 to break through the ground. When I saw this I wondered if the other 2 would make it. Sure enough about 4 - 5 days later #7 & #8 popped up out of the ground. All this time I'm watching the ones in the pot develop more and more leaves. I started theorizing that maybe the number of leaves that grow indicate the number of cloves in the bulb. I guess I have to wait a bit more to report on this.
During all of this my housemate discovered another different culture in the refrigerator. White thingies (remember that's the roots) growing again. This time we identified it as an onion. Asked my housemate, once again, not to throw it out. I removed the rotten layers of onion, divided it in half (it looked like there were 2 sets of roots growing so I decided to split it into 2 (hopefully) onions. Inside the rotten layers, to my surprise, there was a shape like a spring onion. This culture had a big sweet onion. I decided it wasn't a spring onion and planted it. One went into a pot by itself and the other went into the ground beside #'s 5, 6, 7, & 8 garlic plants under the living room window.
If the length of the leaves is any indication of the size of the bulbs of garlic, then the ones in the pots will be huge. If the number of leaves on the garlic indicate the size of the garlic, then the ones under the window will be huge. I can't tell yet which it true. I guess I'll know when I dig them up. I'll have to wait and see with the onions too.
What is fascinating to me with all of this is I have been accused of being able to kill artificial flowers...that's when the dust is 2 inches thick rather than 1 inch thick. And only twice in my life have I attempted growing any kind of edible material. Once in high school my step-father did most of the hard work and I was away at camp. The other time was carrots in rocky soil...they were funny looking carrots, about 3 inches long with a diameter of about 3 -4 inches. They had to grow out rather than down because of the rocks I didn't move out of the way.
Well, I'll keep you posted on this...gotta go for now. Love you all.
Winter With Herbs In Florida
Yes, It does get down to freezing temperatures...BEFORE the wind chill factor is added.
With predictions of low to mid 30's for last night, I covered the herbs again. This morning I went outside to check on them. Pretty parsley kicked off its blanket sometime during the night. Still looking healthy in spite of no blanket. #3 looks as though it has new growth on each stem. Yeah! It must have liked the day or two of warmer weather we had.
Now if we can get through the February cold weather we'll be in good shape.
Posted January 15, 2011
Well already we've had two very cold spells here in Florida. While North & South Carolina and Georgia were having snow, we weren't too far behind them. Freezing temperatures and ice on the windshield.
I know you may be saying "poor baby". But for us who are used to 95+ with 95+ humidity that's COLD. It wouldn't be so bad if it stayed that way. Here we have 80's for a couple of days and then freezing for a couple of days. The temperature goes back and forth like that almost all winter.
Now back to the herbs. Pretty Parsley absolutely loves the cold weather and always has more stems on it after a cold snap than before the cold snap. The others are hanging in there too...to my surprise.
What did they tell me about the cold? They all agreed...can you imagine them all agreeing...they wanted a blanket on at night and during the day if it is windy. They must not like the cold air on their "ears". They take after their human on that count. So, I grabbed a couple of old towels and threw them over the herbs. They love it and do well with it.
Just one way to help them out.
On Meditation
How It's Done
The first step is to turn off all phones, alarm clocks, televisions and find a comfortable spot to sit. Out in nature is good...why not beside your herbs?
Remember - this is YOUR time and anything outside of meditation does not need your attention at this time. 10 - 20 minutes to start is good.
The second step is to clear your mind of all "mind chatter". Not so easy? Keep reading.
What I've found to work the best, is to have a paper and pen or pencil beside you while you're trying to "clear" your mind of all chatter. When a stray thought, like, I have to do the laundry, or grocery shop, or call so and so, comes into your mind, write it down. Remember the journal thingy in the previous section to write down whatever needs to be written down in the moment? When you're done writing, go back to clearing your mind and thinking of absolutely nothing. Some of you may already be there. That's good.
Another tool is to "watch" as though you're watching a train go by...just watch, don't follow a train car down the track...just watch. Another way to clear your mind is to "see" yourself in your favorite RELAXING vacation spot...like in a quiet lagoon, by an empty beach, in the mountains, sitting by a stream with only yourself. RELAX is the key word here.
This is not a time to sleep.
As you are going deeper into nothingness - ask what it is you need to know right now. After the question is asked let it go. You will receive the answer later.
Now is the time to open your heart center -
Focus attention on your heart center - from that center allow unconditional Love to flow out and around you. After you can see, feel, hear, smell or taste it, allow that energy, that unconditional Love energy to fill the room or space you are sitting in. Feel it, see it, hear it, taste it or smell it. Bathe in Unconditional Love. Now, allow that Unconditional Love flow over, through, and around the city you live in. Now the county, the state/province. Allow it to flow over, through and around the hemisphere you live in and then around the whole earth and eventually the whole universe.
When you are finished with this, sit in the feeling of total Unconditional Love.
Another Funny Story
What about the Rosemary?
I love numbers and the #3 came to me...oh yeah, that's the 3rd herb listed in that song from the 60's. I asked the rosemary if that was its name. I started laughing when it said, why of course.
Which of my guides or teachers brought that to me? I tuned in, I saw my first mentor for intuitive development, meditation classes. Paul, who is in spirit now and was just the right age during the 60's hippie movement, was standing between me and the rosemary laughing his funny laugh. He said he thought that was quite appropriate for a rosemary plant.
You see you can have fun with this talking to the herbs.
Okay, Okay...back to lessons.
What Next?
Practice, Practice, Practice
Practice, Practice, Practice.
Some people have it in an instant...some people have it after a few years. I was one of those who wanted to control every thing so it took me awhile to learn to meditate. Or was it I had to learn not to try to control everything.
Have patience...it will come.
One thing to do is find a friend who wants to learn to meditate and sit with that person on a regular basis. Same time every day is best even if you're learning this by yourself.
While sitting with a friend the type of energy built is more than twice as much as the two of you sitting alone.
BY THE WAY, you do NOT, repeat, you do NOT have to sit on a hard floor with your legs crossed in uncomfortable positions. Please do sit up straight though.
When you start coming out of meditation is when you may receive the answer(s) to your question(s). Other ways you may receive the answer(s) are nature, billboards, unexpected encounters while in the check out line at the store. Listen to the herbs...they can tell you many things.
Another Funny Story
Essy Oregano
There must be a season for oregano. When I went to purchase an oregano plant there were only a few and they didn't look too healthy. I stood there for awhile trying to decide (using logic) if I should get one or wait. Then one of the plants got my attention.
The plant wanted to come home with me. Of course my logical side (the whole time I was standing there) tried to debate this with my spiritual creative side. Funny thing happened. The plant said take me with you. I grabbed the plant and put it in my cart.
When I got it home I REALLY saw how bad it was when I transplanted it to a bigger pot. Half the leaves were dead along with half or a bit more of the root structure. I knew I'd have to send it allot of Unconditional Love. I did this for about a month. Of course, I've done this with all my herbs, but this one I took a bit more time with.
After about a month more of this, I sat down with the oregano and asked it what it wanted to share with me. "I'm going to be the biggest plant in the garden". Up went my eyebrows and down with my mouth. I was in instant shock. I could just manage, "Oh, okay."
I trusted what I received (it wouldn't hurt, that's for sure.) and why not. Practice, Practice, Practice.
One day when I came home from work, I really took a good look at Essy. "She" was bigger than all the other herbs in the garden. Not taller but she did fill the whole pot, was bigger than and had longer stems than the other plants I had that grow close to the ground. (remember when I transplanted to a bigger pot...it hardly took up a quarter of the space.)

What's Next For you?
Talking To Herbs...You Can Too!
You don't need to "say" anything to them. Just share the good energy with them...then "listen". What you sense is their energy coming back to you. That's part of the old saying what you give is what you receive.
Now very quietly, either telepathically or out loud, ask your question to all or one of your herbs. It doesn't matter the question. It could be if they want to contribute to dinner or just how are they doing today, it will be answered. Try to determine if what you heard came from your higher self, one of your teachers or guides in spirit. (Hint: it works better for me if I only ask one herb at a time.)
While the herb is "talking" to you - Try to determine if it is one of your teachers or guides in spirit or if it is a nature spirit or if your Higher Self (that part of you which is connected to god.) is speaking to you through the herbs.
Just keep practicing your meditation at your regular time. This part is the why of learning to meditate and receive answers from Spirit.
Pretty Parsley
The "mouthy" plant.
Parsley has the quality of freshening ones breath after a meal. That's why restaurants garnish with parsley.
Not only does it freshen ones breath, but this one is mouthy too. It's the first one to talk with me when I approach The Herb Parlor. When I first brought it home, it didn't say too much, but after it started talking and it hasn't stopped yet.
First it told me it wants planted in the ground not in a pot. For some reason, I let it know it was too small to be in the ground. It hasn't stopped telling me this. I'm waiting for a bit warmer weather to plant it in the ground.

The recipes call for fresh herbs. Well, have you priced fresh herbs at the grocery store lately. Buy a small herb plant for the same price, nurture it and it pays for itself over and over. Not to mention the fun of talking and listening to the herbs.
