The Skinny On Tall Bed Frames
When you look at what people slept on 150 or 200 years ago it seems like beds were divided between simple pallets on the floor and those tall beds that sometimes required a step to climb into bed at night. Obviously, it was the well to do people with elegant homes that had the tall beds and those who had less fortune slept on pallets on the floor. As time changed and bed frames became more affordable to everyone pallets came off the floor and onto frames that were built low to ground in order to accommodate first a set of springs and later box springs which raised the mattress to comfortable sleeping height. Soon almost every one had beds that were relatively the same height. However, today's modern beds are various heights to accommodate everyone's aesthetic and functional needs. Tall bed frames are just one of today's many choices for bed owners to choose from.
While many standard bed frames set a mere 4 inches or so off ground tall bed frames have as much as 8 or more inches of under the bed space. This extra space can serve a number of purposes. In homes where extra storage space is needed, and what home these days can't use extra storage space, the area under the bed is high enough to accommodate plastic containers with bedding, and other essentials that can be hidden out of site by the use of a dust ruffle or bed skirt. This allows you to store those seldom used things out of site and keep your entire home looking neater.
In many cases, these beds have storage drawers all ready built in that gives the entire bed an overall polished look as well as provides the extras storage space you may need. Others come with trundle beds or at least the option of purchasing trundle beds so that you can provide an extra bed for overnight guests.
For those who do not need the extra storage but who may have knee trouble due to arthritis or other conditions tall bed frames can make it easier to rise in the morning. The lower to the ground a bed is the more pressure that is put on a persons knee joints when he attempts to rise, a higher bed frame places less pressure on knee joints when rising from sitting to standing position.
In addition, the higher a bed is off the floor the easy it is to sweep or dust mop beneath the bed. Anyone who has tried sweeping under some of the lower bed frames will appreciate how difficult it can be to really clean the dust from under these beds. The taller the frame the simpler the job is.
Tall bed frames also seem to go with different types of dÈcor better than lower bed frames do. Victorian dÈcor as well as country dÈcor just seems to lend itself to the higher frame height giving a more "authentic" look to these decors. There is nothing like a beautiful hand quilted bed spread on a high bed to make a room look old fashioned and absolutely charming.
While some people prefer higher bed frames the choice really depends on what height you find more appealing.
