The Roosters

History

The Roosters played their first match on 20th April 1908 against Newtown. They played at Wentworth Oval and won 32-16.
They were the first club to win 3 premierships in a row in seasons 1911, 1912 and 1913.
In 1935, they lost only one game all season and then went on to be undefeated in 1936 and 1937. They are still the only club in history to remain undefeated two seasons in a row.
After the premierships of 1940 and 1945, Easts failed to make the finals for the next seven years. They lost the 1960 grand final to St George 31-6 and then in 1966 they finished last and took out the wooden spoon.

Jack Gibson became coach for the 1967 and 1968 seasons and big improvements were made to the club. This was also the time that the emblem was changed.

Jack Gibson who was now called the 'Supercoach' came back to coach in the 1974-1976 seasons.

Between 1972 and 1982, Easts won 2 out of 4 grand finals and also won 4 minor premierships.
In 1974 the Roosters won their first grand final in 29 years by defeating Canterbury-Bankstown (the Bulldogs) 19-4. This was coach Jack Gibson's first title.
In 1975 they defeated St George in the grand final 38-0, this was the largest margin in a grand final until last year (2008) when Many defeated the Storm 40-0.

The Centenary of Rugby League Panel considered the 1974-1974 Roosters team to be among the greatest club team of all time!

Between 1984 and 1995 the Roosters had only 1 finals appearance. Then during the Super League war they recruited Penrith coach Phil Gould and Brad Fittler also from Penrith. The Roosters stayed with the ARL during the Super League War.

The Roosters then went on to play in 4 grand finals in 5 seasons.

They won their first premiership in 27 years in 2002. defeating the Minor Premiers the New Zealand Warriors 30-8. This was their 12th Premiership.
In 2003 the Roosters lost the grand final to Penrith 18-6.
In 2004 they lost the grand final to the Bulldogs 16-13.

In 2007 the Roosters were the first club to play 100 seasons as they are the only club to play in every season since 1908.

In 2009 The Roosters finished bottom of the ladder to take out the wooden spoon.
