What I love about The Very Hungry Caterpillar
Beautiful Artwork
One of the things that I love about The Very Hungry Caterpillar, other than the beautiful artwork, is the way the lifecycle of a caterpillar is shown.
The caterpillar is shown first as an egg, then as a small caterpillar, as it eats it way through cake, and pizza and other fun foods, the caterpillar gets fatter and fatter. The final butterfly shown is beautifully depicted, and as a child, I always found this to be an amazing thing.
I also love the way the caterpillar is shown eating the food, with small pages and holes in them, you just can't resist sticking you fingers through.
This book teaches children the days of the week and basic counting as well as the lifecycle of a caterpillar. It truly is a fun book that is also very educational without being preachy or forced.
Truly a classic.

Art Idea for The Very Hungry Caterpillar
One very simple art idea to go with reading The Very Hungry Caterpillar, is to get a large circle hole punch and punch out a lot of different coloured circles.
Give each child the circles to glue on a piece of paper to make their own caterpillars.
You could also provide pictures of different foods and have the children glue a white circle on the food to show the hole where The Very Hungry Caterpillar ate through.
Perhaps combine this with another paper showing a caterpillar munching through leaves.
One piece of paper with a caterpillar eating its way through foods from the Hungry Caterpillar book, and another with a more realistic version of what a caterpillar would eat.
All you need for this art project are hole punched circles, something to draw a face on the caterpillar, pictures of foods and some glue.

- I love Eric Carle!
My favorite is The Very Quiet Cricket.
Although my daughter's was From Head to Toe. She would mime the pages before she could speak. So sweet! She would do it as I was turning the page, so she knew which page was next.
Brings tears to my eyes just now remembering it. Thank you for this memory Seegreen.
