Barcodes Are Everywhere

Barcodes and barcode related products are all around us. Virtually everything in your kitchen store cupboards either has, or used to have a barcode printed on it. Every book, magazine or newspaper you purchase is barcoded. Nearly every shop you visit will have barcode scanners attached to their Cash Registers or Point of Sale Terminals and many of them will have barcode printers located somewhere in the store.

This lens is intended to provide you with an introduction to the workings of barcodes, together with relevant links to authority sites that will provide more detailed information, should you require it.

Benefits of Barcoding

Efficiency, Consistency and Improved Inventory Management

Improved data accuracy is the single most common motivation for implementing a barcode system. Often the backbone of operations, data entry enables a company to produce accurate reports and predictions about future needs and actions.

Besides providing near perfect accuracy, bar coding also enables users to work faster, without sacrificing accuracy. A good working example of this can be found at the supermarket checkout. Prior to barcode scanning, the cashiers had to rely on price labels fixed to the goods or their memory for prices. Scanning not only ensures accuracy of pricing, whilst speeding up the checkout process, it also enables the retailer to implement sophisticated real-time stock management systems. These stock management systems allow the retailer to provide a better inventory service for the customer, whilst implementing ultra-efficiency into the supply chain.

A bar code (also barcode) is an optical machine-readable representation of data. Originally, bar codes represented data in the widths (lines) and the spacings of parallel lines and may be referred to as linear or 1D (1 dimensional) barcodes or symbologies. But they also come in patterns of squares, dots, hexagons and other geometric patterns within images termed 2D (2 dimensional) matrix codes or symbologies. In spite of there being no bars, 2D systems are generally referred to as barcodes as well.

The first use of barcodes was to automate grocery checkout systems, a task where they have become almost universal today. Their use has spread to many other roles as well, tasks that are generically referred to as Auto ID Data Capture (AIDC). Newer systems, like RFID, are attempting to make inroads in the AIDC market, but the simplicity, universality and low-cost of barcodes has limited the role of these newer systems. It...
