Noticed distinctly BLACK fox here 170 km. North of Fort McMurray in Alberta, Canada. This fox appears to be starving to death--is beggin for food here at the work camp but all personnel are under strict orders by agreement with the Native Reserve here NOT to feel any wild animals under any circumstances. I've noticed the black box convulsing and trying to vomit today--prob. due to eating something inedible (to stave off starvation?)... I now hear that the black fox is very rare?! Can anything be done here? or should we simply allow mother nature to take it's course? just wondering....

My daughter and I saw a black fox this morning on the way to school, in Littleton, CO near Mineral and Platte Canyon. It was an amazing sight. I told her it was probably a good omen and we would have a really good day. Then I saw this article. Yikes, but I'm sticking with my original story.

I saw a Black Fox while walking the dog last night. I live in South Carolina and have seen many gray foxes but did not know there were any black ones and wondered how rare they were so I came upon this site. It was a beautiful young adult and I am glad to have seen it.

We live in the Greenville, SC area and I husband saw two Black Fox in a briered field area in Mauldin a few weeks ago. The area they came out of, however, was being cleared off by construction to build a new building. Not sure if they had babies in their den or where they relocated to. Our daughter found this site and told us there was someone who commented from SC so we were curious what area you are from. She was not aware there were Black Foxes either. He said they were beautiful.

I live in Thornton, CO and just had a black fox bedding under a tree in my back yard, At first it looked like a black cat, I could only see it's head, then it stood up and jumped to the top of my 5' fence in one leap! Pretty cool sight!

Sighted what appeared to be a mature black fox this morning in Riva Chase (near I-70 exit 256). First one I've seen in the 16 years I've lived here. All black except for the white tip on it's bushy tail. Colorado Wildlife says it's actually a red fox -- except black. Go figure!

I just saw what may have been that same black fox with a white-tipped tail yesterday in Carbondale, Colorado. I thought it was a stray dog and approached but it ran off and you can imagine my surprise! I never knew black foxes existed!

Yesterday, August 17th 2010, while driving Wilson Pond Road south of Winthrop Maine a small black fox ran in front of my vehicle, stopped and looked at me (I was driving 25 mph) and turned and ran back in the direction he came from and into a yard. That was my first wild fox sighting since moving to Maine. Pretty neat.

I saw a black fox yesterday. I was all excited. The black fox had the shiniest black coat with just a little white at the end of the tail. This fox was a large fox living in my neighbors yard. My neighbor has the largest yard in the neighborhood and they own half the block so I'm not surprised to see a family living there. It's pretty neat to see such a rare sight indeed.

I spotted the fox in Denver Colorado around evans and tennyson Just east of Sheridan blvd by a few blocks.

I was on a friends porch the other night in town and a black fox walked up right to us and scared the shit out of us. We thought that it was a skunk and ran away from it but it followed us. One of the weirdest things that I've seen in a long time. We were a little under the influence but it was wild.

It ran out in front of my car, thankfully I was driving slow, and it had some kind of small animal in its mouth...probably a rat or something.

I saw a black fox in Portsmouth city centre one night in early January 2010. I work nights, and get to see a lot of urban foxes out and about anyway. But the one I saw earlier this year was when there was a lot of snow on the ground, the black fox would have stood out clearly. I did not know they were that rare, but my colleague also saw it, and claims to have seen it several times - in the city of all places.

I once owned a black fox as a pet. He was actually very tame and good with children and my other dogs. Although he did not perfer cats! i bought him at a flee market, and had him for about 2 years. unfortunatly he was kille by a stry dog that came in our yard while he was out playing in the tall grass. He will never be forgotten. The black fox can make a great pet, if in the right owners hands. I enjoyed reading the info in here it brought back memories! in rememberance of: DANK

Ranee, I believe you are in my neighborhood along the same bike path. That family of foxes have lived under your porch for at least 2 years, we watched the red fox babies play in your yard all last year. I saw the black fox for the first time last week and my husband and kids saw it tonight! They thought I was nuts! Hopefully you don't mind them living there a little longer, we enjoy watching them!

The foxes (4 black/ 3 red) are making themselves at home in our backyard. I have several photos of them (on my facebook or can email them to anyone interested) including a photo of the mom nursing all 5 babies. The babies play all over the yard. I think the dad took them on a hunt this morning. They have started eating meat.

Upon further investigation this morning, we found out there is a whole family of foxes living under our back porch. Black fox male, red fox female, 3 baby black foxes and 2 baby red foxes. We have not been home in the mornings to see them but they were out this morning, playing in the backyard, with a football. Animal control said they will leave soon.

I just took my dog outside before turning in. I could tell she saw something. I went out with her and at first thought it was a black cat. It was dark but I could tell it was larger than a cat. I got two pictures of it. Definitely a black fox with a white tail. Was not afraid of me one bit when I tried to scare it off-just looked at me. It is still out there. We live in Westminster, CO, near the Hyland Hills golf course. I see red foxes frequently in the neighborhood but have never seen a black fox. I googled "black foxes" and came to this website. Beautiful but not too comforting seeing it in the back yard when we have a small dog.

I saw that black fox ! He was at Mineral & Jackss Hill Rd, crossing JHR the morning of March 23rd, bwtween 9:30 -10:00 AM. ( could there be more than one black fox in South Park?) He was eastbound from the railroad tracks at Santa Fe Dr. and I watched him from my truck at the South side of Mineral & Long Ave as he leasurely trotted towards , then across the street and down into the gulley. I kept saying to myself, "That's a BLACK fox. That not a coyote or a dog. That's a black fox"! I almost always carry my camera, except that day. From the 100+ yards away, I probably could not have gotten a great photo anyway but It was very cool to see something that's not the plain old everyday red foxes that roam my street up in North Denver nearly every evening. This sighting made my trip to my old neighborhood and the eye doc pretty special.

At noon today, we watched a totally black Fox stroll across our front pasture, past our 11 grazing horses, around our front pond, under the fence, and sit down in the adjacent lowland near our pond. It is the 2nd time this black beauty has been spotted in the last week. I only hope it does not have too strong a taste for my ducks and guinea fowl. I have learned the hard way that my birds must be secure and safe at night in order to escape the awful fate of being a fox's dinner. I have trained my poultry to go into my barn at night so they can sleep in fearless peace. Black or red or grey...foxes are crafty and heartless hunters with lethal consequences for my beloved poultry. Yes, they have to eat...but not my livestock, please!

At 3:15 this morning, doing the insomniac shuffle, I saw a pair of black foxes running around a large doe for about 5 minutes in the front yard of my parents home in Grand Marais, Mi. (U.P.).
It was too dark out to tell if they had white tips on their tails.
I wish I could have photographed them, as I was accused of dreaming or seeing red or grey fox.

I saw what I think was a black fox on Lakeshore Dr. in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, in an Indian Reservation. It was running in the middle of the road. Traffic was slowing and stopping for it. I tooted my horn as it ran in front of my car...thought it was a dog, but had no collar. I didn't think there was such an animal, but the configuration was exactly that of a fox. Beautifu animal!

    Hi,

I wonder where in MD you are? I am in Oxon Hill just over the line from DC. For weeks have been hearing a very unpleasant noise at night. As there is a woods on the lot next to ours, I figured it was one of the animals living there--hunting? Or being hunted? I didn't know what it was.
Tonight, I drove into my yard just as dusk was fading to night and saw a smallish black animal crossing the yard. I stopped and took a look. It stopped and looked back. I figured it was a fox--black, with a bushy tail but it didn't look at all like the red foxes I've seen. Tail wasn't that bushy, the look was almost like a big scrawny cat with pricked up ears. Then it barked at me--the same sound I'd been hearing in the night for weeks. It doesn't have that white patch at the tip of the tail as some of the black fox photos online show--it was all black.
So I wonder where in MD you are--if you are near me or if there are a lot of them around the state.

We live in Loveland, Colorado, and have a series of rough stone terraces in our back yard. A vixen comes every spring to raise a litter of kits to our great delight. To our surprise this year, four of her four kits are black! Three of these four have a white tip on the tail; the fourth is completely black. We had heard of a male black fox in the area but had never seen him. As you can imagine, these black foxes have become quite a neighborhood attraction.

I live in the Catskills, NY and I literally was just out this morning walking in the woods with my 6 month old son strapped to my chest when I heard a cry that I thought was a bird at first, but as I got closer, it sounded more like that of my cat. I stopped, but the sound came closer, and then emerged onto the path a black fox cub. I, too, had no idea what I was looking at, and tried to take a picture with my phone, but the memory was full. It began to approach me in a nervous way, crying all along, and I didn't want it closer, so I turned to go back, but saw its mama on the path behind me - also black. I could hear cries of other cubs in the distance, and I knew I was between mom & cub. Eventually, she jumped off the path and I walked back down toward my house, telling her I didn't want to hurt her or the baby & I was a mom too. I came back in and searched it out online because I'd never seen one before, and here I landed.

I live in Maryland and there is a black fox(s) that lives somewhere around my house. I first saw it last year around midnight and then I saw it again this year around the same time. At first I had no idea what it was but after searching the internet I figured out it was a black fox. Mine looks pretty much like the pictures I have seen except for the fact that it is a good bit fatter. I guess there is some good food around my house.

What a great experience. I'm amazed there are still sightings of a black fox inthe UK. I stay in Scotland and since January last year when we started to get regular visits from a friendly red fox vixen, have become fascinated with this beautiful animal and am trying to gather together people's experiences with these animals and some of their folklore.
If there is anyone in Scoland who may have seen a black fox, please get in touch. Jane,, I would love to hear from you again if you are lucky enough to get another sighting.

    Best wishes,
    Cate.[in reply to Jane]

I live in Metro Denver Colorado. Our backyard backs up to a large soccer field - I looked out my window this morning and saw a BEAUTIFUL BLACK FOX running by our chain link fence. WOW, how beautiful, what a gift.

I live in NorthWest Florida, near Eglin A.F.B. and had the pleasure of witnessing a black fox running across the road. I wasn't sure what I saw so I began asking around and decided to go online to find out, for sure, what I had seen. I was stunned to find that it is such a rare animal to North America, much less, Florida. I feel lucky to have encountered such and animal. Just wish I had a camera with me at the time. A memory photo will suffice for me!

    Hi

I was opening my bedroom curtains 7.30am on Monday 2 February 2009 and just below in the gravelled area of my garden I saw what I thought was a black cat but realised it was too big for a cat. It was a black fox but I had never heard of black one before. What a lovely sight this black beauty against the thick snow covering I watched it go through the hedgerow into the field at the side of my property. My son and daughter in live in a property to the front of my house and I mentioned what I saw and my daughter in law told me that she and my grandaughter watched it leaving my garden and walking in the field. It returned on Tuesday morning although I did not see it but noticed the new paw prints in the snow. There has been no sign since but I have put some dog food out - it must be hungry to come so close to my house, I live in Warwickshire by the way.

The black fox shown in the pictures above is an astonishing creature. Should I ever have the chance in completing my goal, I will see to it that a Rehabilitation Sanctuary is created for any animals to have fallen in danger, including the black fox.

What a beautiful animal! 5* Also, I had no idea that there were any foxes at all in USA, whether of any colour, mythical or literal, past or present. I have lensrolled this to my dingo (dingo-australia), a lovely creature rapidly becoming extinct

I love Squidoo because people make lenses like this. I will save it and share it with my daughter. We will both dream of seeing a black fox one day. Thanks

Oh how lovely! I had a family of foxes at the bottom of a graden where I once lived. I loved seeing and hearing them all. But I've never heard of a black fox. Thanks for such a well written, informative lens! 5 foxy stars for you ;)

What a beautiful fox! It reminds me a bit of a page I read the other day about a rare white House Sparrow also in Britain.

An excellent and really very interesting lens from you as always. I wasn't aware of the Black Fox before, I sure am now though and would love to see one for myself! I know it's unlikely that I ever will; it'd still be nice to do so however and I believe it'd be really quite an exciting experience. Such beautiful creatures, shame about the noises they make but they certainly are very nice to look at! A fantastic lens from you there and a certain 5 stars from me. A very well laid out and informative lens! Your writing is beautiful as always and I just loved everything about the lens.
