Decorative Sculpture Stands in Sarasota Median
Perhaps Diana Zimmerman, the magician known for choreographing David Copperfield's work and a prolific collector of fairy art, would agree. I understand that she owns one of the largest collections of Auguste Moreau's sculpture because of her interest in this genre.
While Moreau's subjects tended toward young maidens swirling in gauzy gowns, beneath the fabric the sculptor used a realistic style for portraying people. One sees that realism in the Sarasota bronze, officially titled The Butterfly Lady. Here the female subject wears moth-like wings but is clothed more brazenly than is usual in Moreau's works.
No matter, The Butterfly Lady ranks among the most beautiful bronzes in town. She stands in the Theater Distict near Florida Studio Theater in the Cocoanut Avenue median at North Palm Avenue in Sarasota, Florida. Paul Passerat and Jack Wise donated the sculpture to Sarasota's Theater & Arts District in November 2000, according to a placque affixed to its base.

And find your shoulder to light on,

More about the Sculptor
Auguste Louis Mathurin Moreau (1834-1917)
Sex: m
Artist occupation: sculptor, painter
State: France
Place of birth: Dijon
Date of birth: 1834
Place of death: Malesherbes
Date of death: 1917
First cited: 1872
Last cited: 1913
Place(s) cited: Dijon Paris
The third son of sculptor and painter Jean Baptiste Moreau, Moreau initiated himself to sculpture along with his older brother Mathurin. In 1861, he made his debut at the Salon, where he would exhibit regularly until 1913. His subjects were primarily genre scenes, pastorals, and allegories; his style was realistic and graceful, revealing his relation to the other embers of the Moreau dynasty. The similitude of names sometimes provokes confusion in the attribution of certain works signed without first initials.
Auguste Moreau was the youngest brother of three celebrated French sculptors. With his two brothers Mathurin and Hyppolyte-François, he learned sculpture under their father Jean-Baptiste as well as at the unavoidable école des beaux arts in Paris. He had two sons, also sculptors, Louis-Auguste and Hyppolyte. Thus making a celebrated dynasty of French sculptors creating thousands of models that can now be found in museums throughout the world. The present sensual group allegorical of dusk or night is believe to have been first created by his older brother Mathurin.
Born in Dijon in the early 19th century, he studied under Mathurin Moreau. Auguste Moreau worked as a sculptor and specialised in figures, statuettes and groups, mainly in marble. He made his debut at the 1861 Salon in Paris and continued to play an active part in the Salon des Artistes Francais as a member of the Societe des Artistes Francais until 1910.
Bronze sculptures by Auguste Moreau are prime examples of the Art Nouveau style. He worked in France during the turn of the century. Moreau was a student of Mathurin Moreau and regularly exhibited his bronze sculptures in the Parisian Salons.
Moreau s bronze sculptures, such as Vici with a Bow, have inspired other sculptures to create in a similar style, such as with our Jeune Femme se Coiffant.

Many in the art world see a dichotomy between art and kitsch, excluding all sentimental and realistic art from being considered seriously. This view has come under attack by critics, who argue for a renewed appreciation of academic art and traditional figurative painting, without the concern for it appearing innovative or new.
In any case, whatever difficulty there is in defining boundaries between kitsch and fine art since the beginning of postmodernism, the word "kitsch" still remains in common use to label anything seen as being in poor taste.

The author examines the reform movement of the turn of the century as an artistic event imbedded in the economic and political interests that inspired, supported, and handicapped it. This volume offers a complex picture of the symbiosis of architecture, furniture design, and craftsmanship with their corresponding approaches to artistic revitalization.

- I can't say I know anything about art nouveau specifically. I just know what I like and I think the Butterfly Lady is beautiful! Dreamy and weightless and flowing. I'd love to see her in person. Beautiful lens and excellent selection of detail about the statue and the artist. :)

- Oh, I think she is beautiful! I completely understand why some would see a fairy when they look upon her overall beauty, but I can see the butterfly in her face. I see serenity. I think of fairies as being playful, fun loving and with a laugh at the world. Whether you see her as a fairy or whether you see the butterfly, what you are really seeing, is beauty. Thank you for introducing us!

- I like art nouveau, but I tend to like prints better than sculpture. I guess it's the rich colors in 2D artwork that is lacking in the 3D creations. Interesting lens nonetheless.

- After years outside, The Butterfly Lady wears a beautiful verdigris so that adds subtle color. Even so I'm with you about paintings and prints. That's one reason that I liked the way the intro module photo turned out, thanks to the sunset! Thanks you for commenting!
