The Big Debate Club Question # 1

Do You Believe The World Will End As Some Predict In The Year 2012?

Loading Fetching blurbs now... please stand by

Yes! Why?

mulberry says:

No, I have no reason to believe it will. It will end sometime of course.

No! Why?

mypotlpeople says:

I think that is silly.

grannysage says:

No, the Mayan calendar just rolls over. But I am thinking that Mother Earth maybe be considering cleaning house some time in the future. We humans have become quite a problem for her.

Tipi says:

The world is not going to end. The Mayan calendar ran out in 2012 because they were all wiped out from the face of the earth. (I do believe) So! There was no one to continue the calendar.

LaraineRose says:

The rainbow was a promise from God that he wouldn't destroy the earth because of man. It does say in the good book that he will destroy those destroying the earth, though. We'll just have to wait and see and make sure that we are pleasing God so that we don't suffer the consequences.

garson3000 says:

I believe (hope, wish) a fundamental shift in our way of life will occur....as to what will trigger this shift, the jury is still out on that. The closer we get to 2013 the more info the entire world will have. Come what will, good or ill, the world and those in it, will answer, we are here.

LindaJM says:

Something will end . . . but I don't believe it will be the end of human existence on this planet.

says:

I think that the Mayans just got tired of making a calender.

OhMe says:

I sure hope not. I have to get my house clean before I leave this earth.

grannysage says:

I think we will just come to the end of the Mayan calendar and then keep going. And even if humans manage to get themselves wiped off the planet, Mother Earth will still keep going.

ElizabethJeanAllen says:

No one can predict the end of time.

The Big Debate Club Question # 2

Can someone effectively manage more than 50 Squidoo lenses at one time?

Loading Fetching blurbs now... please stand by

Yes! Why?

mypotlpeople says:

Someone could, but not me. I'm just at 4 and they keep me busy enough.

grannysage says:

I hope I can when I get that far. Right now 23 is a challenge. But you learn to squeeze in a quick update during commercials of NCIS. LOL

Tipi says:

Yes, I'm doing very well at it with 70 some lenses.

LindaJM says:

Yes... but the more you get, the more it feels like a full time job.

KimGiancaterino says:

50 would be a slam-dunk. I have more than 250 right now!

roysumit says:

It's all about time management. If anyone can manage his or her
time properly then it is quite possible. But then, one should
also know the tricks of the trade. And no procrastination of
course. Not only in squidoo but in all spheres of life.

roysumit says:

It's all about time management. If anyone can organise his or
her time properly then it is quite possible. But one should
know the tricks of the trade. And no procrastination of course.
Not only in squidoo but in all spheres of life. Then it might
be possible.

mulberry says:

Seems possible there are some very successful lensmasters who have far more than 50 lenses.

says:

Not every lens needs to be updated on regular basis so that should leave the average person with enough time to take care of all of them.

Treasures-By-Brenda says:

I suppose it depends on what you manage by effectively manage but I think they can be dealt with since not every one needs constant love and attention!

OhMe says:

Yes, there are a lot of Giant100 Club members who are doing that and more. My sister, Joan4, is one of them. It amazes me because I can't seem to manage my 31 as well as they manage over 100.

ElizabethJeanAllen says:

Yes, but with a full time job, managing 143 is hard. I would like to do more but I run out of time.

PrometheusIV says:

Of course! Management is the key... Using your Google mail account for all of your site notifications, and using RSS feeds from your lenses to feed into your gmail and google reader service, will allow you to see new posts so that you know where to go first. http://short.to/21iz (Article on using GMAIL as your social media cockpit)

MsSnow4a says:

I am sure some can. I am having a hard time with the few I have. So, Im not at sure I would be able to for a while.

mrscookie says:

I only have seven so I'm not talking from experience. There are obviously a lot of people on squidoo who do manage 50+ lenses. I guess it depends on how much time you have on your hands to update them and how organised you are.

kab says:

50? Yes. 200? No. I admit many lenses get neglected, however they are still good lenses in their own right. While they may not have been updated recently, they do have useful content that is helpful to the visitors.

spirituality says:

Sure. I do. Why not?

x3xsolxdierx3x says:

wow....interesting question.....iv'e yet to make it to 50 Squidoo lenses, although, Iv'e seen some who manage to do pretty well managing 50+........i think managing 100+ will be do-able though.....all you really need to do is update a lens maybe once or twice a month to keep it fresh....so, i'd do two or three a day and fall into a routine

No! Why?

LaraineRose says:

There are so very many saying yes. I'm going to have to say that I couldn't handle 50 lenses right now. Maybe some day. I do have a schedule but it is very full and for that to change a disaster would have to happen. No thanks. For those who can do it though, I appreciate reading them when I have time.

Mortira says:

I guess that would depend on your definition of 'effectively', and which someone you mean. Lens juggling is hard if your time is limited. I think it would be very difficult to have 50 or more lenses that never went neglected for promotion or polishing.

The Big Debate Club Question # 6

If You Believe In God, Do You Think He Cares What Religion You Are?

Loading Fetching blurbs now... please stand by

Yes! Why?

LaraineRose says:

I do believe in God. I look at my hand, a flower or even the tiny ant and I can't imagine how anyone not believing in God. As far as religion goes ..a carpenter has a ruler to make sure that what he builds is right. I believe that we need to use the Bible as our measuring rod.

It's like fitting pieces into a puzzle and if a piece doesn't fit .. it is not the true religion. I do spend much of my free time studying the Bible and bible based literature.

unicron says:

If there is a god and he is wise, then he will put due care in all things. Beliefs, no matter how trivial they seem, have had a profound impact on His creations and therefore the causes and consequeces of such things would be examined by Him.

roysumit says:

I believe in God and I also believe God is a supreme power. It
does'nt matter what religion we belong to and I don't think
God has the time to meddle in such petty matters.

Cari_Kay says:

According to God's own Word, as long as we can confess with our mouths and believe in our hearts that God raised Jesus from the dead, we are saved. Denomination or religion matters not.

No! Why?

garson3000 says:

No. For centuries we have been taught by priests, pastors etc. that we are downtrodden, depraved and miserable sinners, born in sin and conceived in iniquity. That is a lie, always has been, always will be...Ernest Holmes

The GOD that I believe cares not whether you're Jew or Gentile, Muslim or Christian. My GOD simple wants each and every man to strive to be perfect, to fullfill our partt of the bargain and become Godlike ourselves. This quest to be like GOD is the sincerest form of reverance and appreciation one can show to the One Creator, the One MIND. Emancipate your mind, be happy and proper.

LindaJM says:

I believe in a conscious Universal Beneficent Force of the Cosmos that responds to our humble requests for assistance. And this force which is neither 'he' nor 'she' probably laughs at our religious dogmas and wishes we'd come to our senses and realize we are all one in spirit.

spirituality says:

If there is a God, I don't think he (or she, or it) cares about something so trivial as our beliefs.

roysumit says:

No; because God does'nt have ample time to meddle in such petty
matters.

mulberry says:

Not really. I believe in God but not religion. Religion is man made. The details of your religion aren't what "counts", it's how you live your life.

manujarch says:

God is in those electrical signals in our brains which benefits anyone yet everyone. It is not the principle, it is the interpretation and the method conveyed.

says:

To me there isn't enough evidence that there is a God. Gods were invented by humans to try to make sense of things.
But if I'm wrong I doubt that God would care. I think it's more important to be a good person then a religious one.

Cinetech says:

No, she doesn't.

grannysage says:

I think She wants us to follow our own path.

The Big Debate Club Question # 8

Do you believe President Obama will turn the economy around before his 4 yr. term is done?

Loading Fetching blurbs now... please stand by

Yes! I believe he will because...

roysumit says:

Yes. Surely he is not going to beat around the bushes in Iraq. he
He is not going to spend much money in military warfare unless
necessary. He will try to lessen outsourcing thus creating job
oppurtunities. After all he is pragmatic and well aware of his
inheritence as a President after becoming one. I hope he will.

mulberry says:

I think he can help turn it around. He won't get it 100% and he can't do it on his own obviously.

manujarch says:

He'll optimize the budget allocations.

California_Dreamin says:

Even though the U.S. and world economies have been dealt a severe blow by a dogmatic belief in the infallibility of "the Market" on the part of many Americans, the next four years will see an explosion in technological and conceptual innovations (inside and outside of America) that will not only help us humans to meet the many challenges we face today, but also help to grow the economy. If McCain had won the election, the U.S. would have continued to fall furthur and furthur behind countries like Japan and China in terms of both wealth and influence. But I think Obama has already began to put America back on course to be a leader in the 21st century instead of a once-great power. I really think he's the right person at the right time.

OhMe says:

All I can do is hope and pray that the economy will turn around.

PrometheusIV says:

I believe that he definitely can put us on the right track. If he can put our budget into order, and help to get some new jobs created, and get illegal aliens working and not paying taxes under control, he may see marginal success by the end of his 1st term, and complete success by the end of his 2nd term.

No! I believe he will not because...

Tipi says:

Obama isn't God, he is just a man who happens to be a politician. :(

jeffwend says:

It will eventually improve itself, but he is not helping it by borrowing more and more money and meddling with big business and banks.

LindaJM says:

This question made me laugh.

unicron says:

...he passed a bailout plan just like the last puppet to the international financiers. Problems on all scales can only be fixed by changing the root causes of the problems. All he has done is create more debt to pay off old debt that will in turn create more debt. Of course you americans will pay for it through taxes and im sure some poor third world country will pay for it through unjust wars and illegal big business deals.
Chances are the great "hamster wheel" effect the bankers create will give us way out that will ultimetly cost us more down the road.
They create the problem (interest rates and debt based economic systems) and create the solution (loans and bailouts)Happy Shopping!

says:

I don't think that anyone can in such a short period but I do think that he'll be able to push it in the right direction.

ElizabethJeanAllen says:

I think the economy will turn around eventually, in spite of Obama's influence.

MsSnow4a says:

I am inclined to say no although I am hopeing something good happens. I am an optimist for the most part. so Im sure something good will come out of it.

MikeMoore says:

I'm not American, but I doubt it very much. The US has a huge debt and it won't shrink any time soon. However, he certainly can't do much worse than Bush!

spirituality says:

However much I admire Obama - he's no wonder man. The economy will turn around in it's own time. Governments can do a bit to make sure that turn around isn't slowed down. and a bit to quicken it - but that will only make a bit of difference.

operasinger says:

The world has seen unprecedented growth in the last several years due to overindulgent consumers. The only way the economy will turn around is through responsible consumerism and only then will the economy turn around. The next 4 years are going to be up and down. I'm sorry to say but any stimulus package is a band aid covering a deep wound

The Big Debate Club Question # 9

Do You Think The World Will Get Better Or Worse In The Future?

Loading Fetching blurbs now... please stand by

Better! Why?

garson3000 says:

People are fundamentally good. More and more we will come to realise this fact and change our Mindset to reflect this one truth.

LindaJM says:

Goodness always wins over evil, in the end.

roysumit says:

Obviously towards better. I am a positive person so I always
think positive.

mulberry says:

I think there is plenty of nasty stuff in the future. BUT overall, life will improve in the future. We are bound to figure things out eventually.

manujarch says:

I hope the benefits of science shall rule.

ElizabethJeanAllen says:

We'll hit the bottom eventually and then it will improve. It will have no where else to go.

Worse! Why?

LaraineRose says:

Worse before it gets better. It isn't in man's hands to make it better. History has proven that. The clock is ticking - they've set it back a few seconds but not enough to make much difference.

Klaatu1963 says:

Worse, because we can't control our population growth, and we can't lower our living standards, even to save our natural environment.

The Big Debate Club Question #10

Do You Think There Is A Real Solution To World Hunger?

Loading Fetching blurbs now... please stand by

Yes! Why?

LaraineRose says:

Yes. The earth is capable of producing enough to feed all the hungry. There is a distribution problem though.

garson3000 says:

Until the philosophy which holds one race superior and another inferior is finally and permanently discredited and abandoned in all corners of this world.. and true WORLD CITIZENSHIP is achieved....then and only then can human beings care enough about our fellow citizens to solve world hunger.

LindaJM says:

Vegetarianism.

roysumit says:

Yes; if all the world leaders irrespective of their fields go
by their conscience and not by their compulsion. Specially the
political leaders who run their countries. And they are the one
who are mostly bereft of conscience.

mulberry says:

Yes, although I don't know what the answer is...I guess I just have faith in our ability to figure it out.

manujarch says:

Eat veg and clean!

klieneine says:

Absolutely.Raising animals for food is an extremely inefficient way to feed a growing human population. The U.S. livestock population consumes enough grain and soybeans to feed more than five times the entire U.S. population. One acre of pasture produces an average of 165 pounds of beef; the same acre can produce 20,000 pounds of potatoes. If Americans reduced their meat consumption by only 10 percent, it would free 12 million tons of grain annually for human consumption. That alone would be enough to adequately feed each of the 60 million people who starve to death each year. (4)

hlkljgk says:

absolutely. distribution is the problem. see: http://ask.metafilter.com/66167/Feed-the-world#993892

No! Why?

ElizabethJeanAllen says:

Unfortunatly no. We can try, but we're reaching capacity.

Do You Tell Your Children At A Young Age The Truth About The Easter Bunny, Santa, etc.

Loading Fetching blurbs now... please stand by

Yes I do! Why?

Tipi says:

I never lied to my kids about the Easter Bunny or any other tail.

LaraineRose says:

Definitely! I've heard too many children being disappointed when they found out from someone else. Sort of felt their parents had lied to them.

garson3000 says:

Where I'm from, children are told in no uncertain terms that gifts at Christmas and at Easter are provided by their parents ' hard work. No santa clause, tooth fairy or easter bunny.

mulberry says:

I don't have kids, but if I did, I'm sure they would be so bright that they would figure it out first.

hlkljgk says:

i refer to santa et al as fictional characters as in a story book or movie with my 3 year old. no one other than friends and family drop off gifts in our home.

No I don't! Why?

LindaJM says:

No, I didn't. I felt that these myths were part of the magic of childhood (in our culture) and I let them believe as long as it was possible.

If A Mentally Challenged Person Was Convicted Of Killing, Should They Go To Jail Or Mental Hospital?

Loading Fetching blurbs now... please stand by

Mental Hospital! Why?

LaraineRose says:

Mental Hospital for sure, to protect them and others. They are not responsible for what they do.

LindaJM says:

Definitely a mental hospital. If they're insane (ie. a genuine known mental illness) they shouldn't be held to the same standard as someone who isn't insane.

spirituality says:

Mental hospital - you would not want all those convicts pounding on them.

What Is The Best Way To Get The News?

Tipi says:

LaraineRose says:

Internet - I don't watch TV except for entertainment.

LindaJM says:

News sites on the internet. I don't watch TV at all... and the local paper isn't a legitimate way to get news that matters.

mulberry says:

Internet. I don't really watch TV.

manujarch says:

I love google reader, socialmedian, stumbleupon, digg, reddit.

Traditional way, tv, newspapers, etc.

roysumit says:

A quality newspaper. Just the headlines are enough.

spirituality says:

The Big Debate Club Question #16

Do You Think Illegal Aliens Should Be Allowed To Stay In This Country Once They Are Found Or Sent Back?

Loading Fetching blurbs now... please stand by

They Should Be Allowed To Stay! Why?

roysumit says:

Yes. We are citizen of this country by birth, not by choice. So
why should we impose restrictions on their choice?

mulberry says:

I think they should be allowed to stay as long as they are working to become a legal citizen (pay taxes). I just want them to abide by the same laws as citizens and pay for the resources they use.

hlkljgk says:

of course they should. we are prosperous free country and we are all lucky to live in it. share the wealth; love thy neighbor... i do believe they should be on a path to becoming "legal."

They Should Be Sent Back To Their Native Country! Why?

LindaJM says:

If they enter illegally they should go back. If they want to immigrate it should be done legally or not at all. Every job in the USA taken by an illegal alien is one less job available to American citizens who were born here. Other countries don't allow illegal immigration (then forgive it) so why should the USA? And this thing about the USA being a prosperous country that can share is becoming less valid all the time. Many thousands of Americans are out of work now... but illegal aliens are working in this country. It just isn't right.

says:

Depends. If they have adapted themselves (job + speak English) I don't see why they can't become a citizen but if they don't bother to adapt themselves then they should be sent back. Laws exist for a reason...

Cinetech says:

What country, you mean Earth?

No! Why?

LindaJM says:

KimGiancaterino says:

The real question is, if you gave someone a dollar and they won the lottery, would you expect to receive those winnings?

spirituality says:

It was a gift, wasn't it? I might give them 10% or something - certainly not all I won.

mulberry says:

No. Only way this would happen is if we agreed up front the winnings were theirs. If I went and got it, initiated the idea, or picked the numbers, I earned a share.

And that the U.N. helped the world look away while some European countries were dumping toxic waste off the coast of Somalia. The list is long, but to call these men the most dangerous in the world is far from the truth.

Get A Makeover!

LindaJM says:

Absolutely... this is her moment, and she needs to make the best of it.

spirituality says:

She should get a makeover. The hype will pass and then she needs to look her best. While she's challenged in that area, I'm sure she can look better than she does now.

Stay As Is!

mrscookie says:

Far too much emphasis is put on apperances and She has already altered her apperance drastically since she was on the TV.

Yes, I believe it... but I hope it isn't true.

spirituality says:

No!
