If your wondering what is going on with all this DiY talk you hear everywhere, then you've found the right place. I am Scorpio. I have an Attic. And I am here to explain to you all about the Fashion DiY. This Lens is an introduction into the DiY Fashion world. A prerequisite if you will. So if you already know what DiY is, don't bother boring yourself any further with this banter. Click on the Scorpios Attic Link in the right hand corner (it's next to the picture of the bodacious chick) or visit my site at www.ScorpiosAttic.com and DiY Clothing and accessories to your hearts content. If you do want to learn about the Exquisite Art Form that is the Fashion DiY, read on and you will find out more from my ramblings then you ever really need to know on the subject. Enjoy!

So what is Fashion DiY?

a long ass, rambling explanation

Lets start out with the basics, shall we? First thing that you should know is that DiY is an acronym for Do it Yourself. I would suggest The Wiki of course, if you want basic overview of what a DiY in general is, as this Lens is focused completely on DiYs of the Fashion variety.

In a nutshell. Fashion DiY means that you either make your own clothing, or you manipulate existing clothing in such a way that it no longer looks the way that it no longer looks the way it did originally. (Hence Do it Yourself!) This can be accomplished as easily as taking a sharpie and doodling all over a pair of jeans or it can be as complex as taking apart a tee shirt, only to cut it up and sew it back together into a skirt.

In my world Fashion is an Artform. and if Fashion is an Art then DiYs must be the street art of the Fashion world. What better way is there to express yourself? Whither you will admit it or not, what you wear reflects who you are and what your feeling, even if it is only that day you are wearing it. Just like a picture is worth a thousand words, what a person is wearing can say just as much about who they are, and most of the time, they don't even realize it.

WHY DiY?

1- IT'S GREEN: Mother Earth Approves of your Fashion Sense

2- ITS CHEAP: or free. Depending where you get your threads slash ingredients.

3- IT CURES TWIN SYNDROME: so you don't look like everyone else who shops at the mall.

4-IT'S TAILOR MADE: When you make it, you can make it fit like a glove.

5- IT'S ART: how is Self Expression not a good idea?

So What's the Point of DiY?

The Benifits Package

One of the coolest things about Fashion DiYs are that they are hella 'Green.' Why is this? Because you are Recycling an old, ugly, piece of clothing (or fabric) and transforming it into something new and hot. And as an added bonus it saves you money and cures your boredom. (but not your insomnia unfortunately. Infact, I'm pretty sure it just makes it worse. Example? The time is currently 5 am....)

Some other great things about Fashion DiYs? You get to make your threads exactly how you want them. Have you ever had the phrase "That is really cute! except for..." cross your lips? Yeah, that's solved.

The biggest thing for me about DiY is I can make my clothing fit my body type. I'm half an inch under 6 feet tall. And my body is bottle shaped. we're talking over 10 inch difference between my waist and my hips/chest. Bottle shaped. Needless to say it's nearly impossible to find something that actually fits me at the mall that will meet my strict standards of a cute outfit..and that ALONE is a good enough reason for me to DiY.

Then there is the Lucrative side. Etsy.com, Ebay, Boutiques, Markets, all of these are good places to sell your creations. I love selling my creations to other people just for their reactions. (the money is nice too) They are also a great place to buy if you'd rather do that too

Where to find DiY-able Frocks

location location location....

Thrift Shops There is literally no where better to find Vintage clothing of both the super hip and rather ugly varieties. Sometimes I'll pick up something ridiculous for the sheer fact I see it as a challenge. The result is always something incredibly unique and sells to the highest bidder on Ebay.

Yard/Garage Sales These are good for their cheapness factor, as well as the randomness factor.Make a Morning of it. It'll be one of the best shopping sprees you ever went on.

Your Relatives/Friends Closets or basements, or Attics. You might want to ask first before just diving in. that would be highly recommended.

Your own Closet I wasn't going to put this down because I thought it would be the obvious option, but just in case it was too easy..

The Mall a department store, or wherever else you usually shop. This is good for simpler DiYs, or for clothes that you find you for the most part like but still need a little tweaking.

The Weekly Showcase: the DiY Lens from Scorpios Attic
