A Wonderful Story of How Love Grows From Nothing

I read this book after seeing the movie, something I have NEVER done in the past.  Usually after seeing a movie, I think "Well I know what happens, so why bother".  This story is completely different.  It is not about where it ends up, but how it got there.  This is the story of an evolving relationship.  I highly suggest The Magic Of Ordinary Days for everyone who loves to see love bloom.

The story takes place in 1944, when after her mother's death, Olivia Dunn (Livy) finds herself pregnant without a husband. Her father, the respected Reverend Dunn, deals with the situation by sending her off to Colorado to marry a VERY rural farmer, Ray Singleton. This is the story of how love can grow, even between to opposite people from two very different worlds.

There is also a sub-story of two Japanese-American girls who live in an Internment Camp, and working on the Singleton farm. Livy finds a friend in these girls who have also found their lives tossed upside-down.

Amazon's Product Description: Olivia Dunne, a studious minister's daughter who dreams of being an archaeologist, never thought that the drama of World War II would affect her quiet life in Denver. An exhilarating flirtation reshapes her life, though, and she finds herself banished to a rural Colorado outpost, married to a man she hardly knows. Overwhelmed by loneliness, Olivia tentatively tries to establish a new life, finding much-needed friendship and solace in two Japanese American sisters who are living at a nearby internment camp. When Olivia unwittingly becomes an accomplice to a crime and is faced with betrayal, she finally confronts her own desires. Beautifully written and filled with memorable characters, Creel's novel is a powerful exploration of the nature of trust and love.

History has a way of bringing the past to life, conjuring up people and places that have long since disappeared. Living in the past is also a way to flee the present, to experience and perhaps live in a world that is not complicated by emotion and regret. Livvy could have never imagined that her life would take a course that was so distant from the dream she had for herself-her hopes to become an archaeologist, to lead a cloistered yet fulfilling life. But she becomes pregnant and unexpectedly finds herself far from home and her family, married to a man she does not know, as the country is on the brink of war.

Quote:

The Magic of Ordinary Days - Hallmark

The Magic of Ordinary Days was a Hallmark Hall of Fame presentation based on a novel of the same name by Ann Howard Creel and adapted as a teleplay by Camille Thomasson. It first aired on CBS on January 30, 2005. It was directed by Brent Shields and produced by Andrew Gottlieb.

This film starred Keri Russell and Skeet Ulrich.

NEWS: There is rumor of Hallmark filming a sequel to this movie. I guess we just wait and hope.

The first five minutes are the five worst in the whole film, so don't judge it by that. Give it a chance, after that, it is really quite good.

The Book

parwatisingari says:

hi, I have experienced neither. I plan to read the book. It sounds pretty interesting.

Reed Twil says:

I totally agree. The momentum the book built up made the ending so much much more satisfying, and it's true, the sub-plot with Rose and Flora in the book was WAY more believable.

kab says:

I prefer the book. There were a few scenes between Livy and Ray that were so great and would have survived conversion of media that were left out of the movie. It needed them. Plus the beginning of the movie was awful. Although I did like the end to the sub-story with Rose and Flora better in the movie, albeit unrealistic.

The Movie

Elizabeth Reiley says:

I love the book and the movie. The movie gives you the real Ray and how the love bloom between the two through the amazing body languages. It takes you in a different journey. Which is true love.
