Little Green Haired Men who Help Mr. Wonka in his Candy Factory
In the 1971 musical film adaptation, Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory, the characters are orange-skinned and green-haired.
Oompa-Loompas perform impromptu witty, moralising songs about the mischievous children who have been invited to tour the factory. Four songs are presented to make adolescents think about the consequences of their behaviour:
The Augustus Gloop Song
It's about a gluttonous boy who tried to drink up the chocolate river only to fall in and get sucked up into a pipe headed for the Fudge Room;
The Violet Beauregarde Song
It's about a chronic gum-chewer who eats an experimental gum, causing her to turn blue, expand into a human-like blueberry, and be taken to the Juicing Room to return to normal;
The Veruca Salt Song,
It's about a spoiled brat who falls into a garbage chute;
and the Mike Teavee Song,
It's a song about a boy who watches too much television, only to be shrunken down to a height of one inch and sent to a stretching machine to be stretched back to normal.
Whether you prefer the classic version with Gene Wilder or the later version with Johnny Depp playing Willy Wonka, the Oompa Loompa helpers are a treat to watch and really make the movie stand out as they try to teach a lesson in an otherwise intriguing movie full of wit and humor.

The Oompa Loompas at a Glance
Oompa-Loompas are fictional characters from Roald Dahl's books Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and Charlie and the Great Glass Elevator.
In the 1971 film they are portrayed as orange skinned. In early editions of the novel, they are shown as African pygmies. Following growing controversy and criticism, in later editions of the book, they are white skinned and golden haired.
They come from Loompaland (originally, Africa) , which is a region of Loompa, a small isolated island in the Pacific Ocean. In the book, they are the only people Willy Wonka will allow to work in his factory, because of th...

All the Oompa Loompas were played by the same actor.
In the 2005 adaptation, restored to its original title of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, the Oompa-Loompas are small, with short dark hair and bronzed skin, and are all played by the dwarf actor Deep Roy, except in some scenes. Roy's stature was diminished on screen to an apparent height of 75 centimetres (30 inches), using digital compositing and forced perspective. They communicate only through song, mimic, and gestures. As seen in the film, they also have a singular gesture of accord, in which they cross their arms and closed hands up to their chest in a way that resembles the greeting gesture of the aliens in Plan 9 from Outer Space. The only Oompa-Loompa of this list with a name is the high voiced Skeebo, the apparent leader of the Oompa-Loompas. Where's Mr. Slugworth...

Have you noticed that most stores carry more of the black wig from the 2nd movie, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. I actually think the first Oompa Loompas have more character and are cuter.Of course you could easily order the costume above, but if you want to save money and make it yourself, you can get a great visual. I found a website that shows a Halloween costume with the orignal Oompa Loompas with the green hair. They made the green wigs for the Oompa Loompas by purchasing a regular wig at the local Halloween store, they they dyed the wig with green coloring. It came out really well as you can see in the photo. You can view a larger photo and the website that this photo is from by clicking here: Oompa Loompas with Green Wig Photo. Click on the link and you'll be able to see how the whole Oompa Loompa costume was created.
The image and photo are the property of the website and I'm using them here as an example only.
I hope this helps you to create a great looking original Oompa Loompa costume for you or your child.
See below for a child's version of the Oompa Loompa costume with the green wig from the original 1971 movie Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory featuring Gene Wilder.

- This is a cute idea for a Squidwho lens! I do like the 1971 version better--nothing against Johnny Depp, but the original Willy Wonka came off as less creepy, and the green-haired Oompa Loompas were just plain cool.
