What Does Peace Look like?

World Peace Emerging is our website where we tell the stories of people saving the world. What is peace? Disarmament is not Peace. I believe peace is people working together to care for one another and our planet.

Spending a life time searching for peace...

Louise Diamond founder of the Peace Company

Louise Diamond has made working for peace her life focus, for decades helping leaders around the world settle conflict. Founding the Peace Company she began writing, consulting and training. Her text, The Peace Book has sold over 80,000 copies.

I started doing peace work in 1988 internationally as a professional peace builder. I got a PhD in peace studies. I started working in the Middle East and have worked all over the world in places that have conflict. Every place I went to, the work was different. In Cyprus I helped build a citizen peace building movement, and trained hundreds of people. I trained the exiled Tibetan government in negotiation to help prepare them for eventual negotiations with the Chinese. In Liberia, I helped peace leaders identify the eight warring factions to prepare for a pre-negotiation behind the scenes, that did lead to a peace effort down the road. I worked with business leaders in India and Pakistan.

I did dialogues after the Bosnian war, bringing the three ethnic groups together for the first time, when the war ended to start the healing process. I have a very rich career internationally.

The International Day of Peace

PEACE is more than the absence of war.

It is about transforming our societies and uniting our global community to work together for a more peaceful, just and sustainable world for all. Last year more than 3500 Peace Day events took place in 200 countries (including all 192 member nations of the United Nations). It brought together more than 2000 organizations, mobilizing what UNESCO has called The Global Movement For a Culture of Peace.

Join us next year for the 27th annual day of peace.

A few words from George D'Angelo

International Peace Day Vigil founder

The International Day of Peace itself is 25 years old. But it's only been since 2001 that it called for a ceasefire and was set to a specific day, September 21st. In 2002, when I was working on the International Day of Peace in the Department of Political Affairs at the U.N., we started the Vigil. The idea was to have religious communities and religious leaders take responsibility for peace, because, oftentimes, religions are a source of problems.

While I was at the U.N., I ran trainings on conflict prevention. There are many causes that turn peaceful conflict into violent conflict. We became aware of the religious factor, and began to look into the spirituality of peace, which really derives from peace within yourself, a realization that we're all one brotherhood and sisterhood, one humanity. It's when we treat others as ourselves, that we can have some sort of true peace. That's the message behind the International Day of Peace Vigil, in support of the International Day of Peace.

Peace

SMILE! Life's to short to be unhappy.

Wikipedia defines PEACE as a state of harmony, the absence of hostility. This term is applied to describe a cessation of or lapse in violent international conflict; in this international context, peace is the opposite of war.

Answers.com defines PEACE as The absence of war or other hostilities. An agreement or a treaty to end hostilities.Freedom from quarrels and disagreement; harmonious relations: roommates living in peace with each other.

Merriam-Webster.com defines PEACE as a state or period of mutual concord between governments b : a pact or agreement to end hostilities between those who have been at war or in a state of enmity

All these definitions are centered around the same premise that if we end war and achieve disarmament we have peace. I say lets attack it from a different angle, and go after ending poverty. Because everywhere extreme poverty is found, crime, drugs, and sexual slavery flourish. Thats my thought!
