Nearly 250 Squidoo lenses donate money to The Pidgie Fund, but what exactly is The Pidgie Fund? The Pidgie Fund is a non-profit organization which raises money to provide food and shelter for animals in need in the Southern Maine area.

I am Wendy C. Allen a.k.a. EelKat, founder and owner of The Pidgie Fund, and this is our official Squidoo Lens.

The Pidgie Fund

Saving the world one pet at a time.
Cocker Society

Who Are We?

The Pidgie Fund is a Division of Copper Cocker Cards & Gifts, and owned and opperated by the staff of The Twighlight Manor Press.

The Pidgie fund was started December 2005 by Wendy C. Allen. We are a non-profit group saving the world one pet at a time. Nearly 100% of our support comes to us from sales of our products on Zazzle.com. All earnings from these products are used to buy food and supplies for pets in need and shelter animals in the Southern Maine area. To date The Pidgie Fund has helped more than 500 animals ranging from house pets, to farm animals, to wildlife, including mammals, birds, reptiles, fish, mollusks, and amphibians.

The Pidgie fund was named in memory of my long time friend and companion: Pidgie, a Rock Dove or City Pigeon who was found as a day old chick laying in the middle of the road. He was quickly adopted by my 2-month-old kitten: Utopia, and the 2 of them grew up playing together and went on to become fast friends. The 2 of them were my own companions.

I joined the Internet that same month of August 1997. In the years that have passed I became known as the online celebrity known as EelKat. As my Internet fans all knew, whenever I went online, I was never alone, but always in the company of a little gray bird, who either was sitting on the computer, on my head, or running across the keyboard biting my fingers. In all my years online, I was never to use the computer without him at my side. It seemed like I've had Pidgie forever. On December 10, 2005 my long time posting buddy died. He'd been my constant companion for many years and he shall not pass on unforgotten.

Pidgie was not Utopia's only pet bird. My gentle Siamese cat also had 3 pet Budgies.

The Pidgie Fund was created December 11, 2005 in memory of my beloved Pidgie and is run by me and Pidgie's Siamese Cat companion Utopia. The original Website and CafePress shop opened later that week, and has over the last 2 years expanded greatly. Today we move on to the latest expansion: This Squidoo Lens.

The Zazzle gallery was started on April 9, 2007. All products designed, photos taken, and art painted/drawn by Wendy C. Allen. More products well continue to be added as time goes by.

Do Staff Members Get Paid For Their Work?

Nope. None of the staff at The Pidgie Fund has ever been paid a single cent for their work. Everything is done 100% by volunteer work.

Because we pay no staff members, do no for-pay advertisements, and use only free online and local word of mouth promotion, 100% of all money donated to The Pidgie Fund goes directly to the animals.

How Is The Money Spent?

The money is spent on a case by case as needed basis.

Every week we buy a minimum of the following:

    20lbs dry cat food
    10lbs dry dog food
    50lbs crack corn
7 trays of poultry feed bread(approx 12 loaves per tray)
    65lbs cat litter

The cost of our weekly expenses is $30 - $40 per week, as of October 2008.

In addition to those weekly expenses we also purchase the following on a monthly basis:

    hay and/or blankets for bedding
    Frontline flea products
    various cat and dog toys
    canned cat and dog food
    bird seed
    wild bird seed
and various other pet supplies as they are needed

We also pay for emergency veterinary care of cats, dogs, birds, and farm animals on a case by case basis, as often as we can afford to do so.

Though we have dealt with the rescue and rehabilitation of everything from cats and dogs to horses and goats to song birds and squirrels, we specialize mostly in 2 areas:

    Feral Cat Rescue
    Pit Fighter Cock Sanctuary

This involves the capture, spaying/neutering, and taming of wild-born feral cats.

Currently The Pidgie Fund is the home of 13 formally feral cats and 40+ roosters.

Total yearly costs to keep our doors open are a minimum of $4,000 providing there are no emergency medical bills. What doesn't come from Zazzle or Squidoo is paid out of my pocket.

Turtle Rescue

We live right on the coast, where Maine's many rivers and streams meet the ocean and turn to swamps and marshlands. It is the breeding ground for many breeds of turtles, however none are so common or so fierce as the bone crushing Snapping Turtle.

Sadly, roads have been built up through these swamplands and while all the wild fears the great Snapper fleeing from his sight, these fearless beasts are no match for man's own metal-backed beasts: the automobile.

A common project we undertake nearly every summer, is the care and rehabilitation, and re-introduction into the wild, of wild snapping turtles that have been hit by cars and were found still alive at the side of the road. Our land boarders a large swamp, which boarders no roads, and is now the home of many turtles that have been set free there after they had healed of their injuries.

Feral Cat Poll

A feral cat is one that was raised in the wild. Also called strays, wild, or alley cats, feral cats are cats that have never had contact with humans and are often just as dangerous as a bobcat or lynx. Millions of feral cats roam the streets, many dieing of starvation before they reach the age of 2 years old. It is difficult, often impossible to capture and tame these fearful cats, however once captured and tamed, they often adjust well into the family life as a loving house cat.
