The Rocky Horror Show
Before the 1975 film, before the cult following there was a musical. A rock opera to be specific, one called The Rocky Horror Show Very similar to the movie, but not exactly. The storyline remains largely the same, although there are running gags throughout the musical not present in the Movie.
I got a chance assistant direct this wonderful, quirky, campy show in the Fall of 2007. I helped audition the show, attended the first few rehearsals and then took a few weeks off following the birth of my first child. When I returned my baby daughter attended many of the rehearsals with me. To this day, "Time Warp" calms her down ... hmm ... perhaps I need to become involved only in more family friendly shows for the near future.

The best part of the show
The best part of this show has to be the rocking tunes. How many musicals can attract rockers? Joan Jett and Meat Loaf to name a few. We had a reviewer state "It was like being at a rock concert at the [Madison Square] Garden"
Other fun bits were the audience "props" - newspaper, flashlight, and bell to name a few of the "allowed" - food items, water pistols and such were discouraged due to danger to the actors and cleanup issues with the theater.
Then the call backs ... this was probably the most challenging part for the actors. Community theater actors are just not used to the audience shouting things back at them. We actually had several individuals that came to rehearsals and got us all used to the quips. Even so there were times when something unexpected got shouted out during performances and the actors had to take a moment to get back into things.
Although my favorite audience interaction wasn't planned. One woman in the first row had her cell phone ring, which was rude enough, but then proceeded to actually answer and talk on the phone during the performance! Columbia, one of my more seasoned actresses, didn't have any lines at that moment so she started staring the woman down. The woman, once she noticed the "attention" promptly got off the phone.

Bootleg Video of our Show
I have no idea who took this, but it is of our production. A little dark (no pun intended) but the sound quality is reasonable, and you can get a feel of the show. It centers around Riff-Raff's scenes. Time Warp, Sweet Transvestite, and Eddie's Teddy and Science Fiction Double Feature are my favorite numbers from the show - I wish they were all sampled here for you to taste.

- I'm sad to say that I've never seen a live performance of this show. My dad introduced me to the movie when I was 17, saying, "This is kinda risque . . . but you HAVE to see it!" lol. I loved it.

- It's a show I loved directing as there isn't really a part for me in it. Risque ... absolutely, but not-to-be-missed for the 18 and over crowd.
