The Unique Characteristics of The English Mastiff Breed
The Unique Characteristics of The English Mastiff Breed The English Mastiff is a powerfully built canine with a body that can only be described as massive.
The English Mastiff is descended from two ancient breeds.
The English Mastiff breed is an incredible intermingling of grandeur, dignity and courage.
An English Mastiff instinctually positions himself between his owner and a stranger when an unknown person approaches the family's territory.
For all his fierceness, the English Mastiff is incredibly gentle and loving with children.
Your Mastiff not only has a huge body - but he has a heart to match.
The English mastiff is actually descended from two breeds, the Molosser and the Alaunt. This is the oldest breed of British dog. Sometimes, too, the mastiff's personality reflects this grand history.
It's perhaps not surprising that this massive dog was used as early as six B.C. for various fighting venues. He was a central part of many legendary bloodsports, including bullbaiting, bearbaiting, and lion baiting, as well as dog fighting.
As a breed, the English mastiff combines dignity, grandeur and courage. To those who don't fully understand the breed, he may appear to be utterly paradoxical. This is because even though he is calm, loving and affectionate toward his family, he is also a fierce guardian who is fearless, tenacious and ferocious when necessary.
