The Hollows Series by Kim Harrison

Ranked #335 in Books, Poetry & Writing, #15,982 overall

Witches and Vampires and Pixies, oh my!

If you like the True Blood style but want a heroine who doesn't simper, you will adore this fascinating series featuring a witch and her two roomates, who happen to be a living vampire and a cynical pixie.

Adventure, mystery, paranormal activity, romance, this series has it all, including loads of action. Rachel Morgan, the narrator and primary character has reached a point in her life where she needs a change, so her, and two of her coworkers leave their jobs and open their own runner service, a bit like bounty hunters, a bit like detectives, and a whole lot like danger, since they aren't bringing in humans, they're going after vampires, werewolves, witches and more--oh, and there's the whole, learning to live with a vampire who wants to suck her blood kind of thing too!

Their World

This series features three main characters, Rachel Morgan, an earth witch, Ivy Tamwood, a living vampire, and Jenks, a cocky little pixie. These three live in a world that's similar to ours, with one huge difference, a virus caused by genetically-modified tomatoes killed off much of the human population many years ago. This equalized the numbers between the Inderlanders, the witches, vampires, and other non-human species hidden among us, and the humans. That made the Inderlanders no longer as vastly outnumbered. The chaos from the plague and the more even numbers caused the Inderlanders to come to a decision. They came forth and revealed themselves. This time was called The Turn. Now, the Inderlanders live openly among the humans, mostly.

Book Reading Order

Kim Harrison has put out nine books in the Hollows series so far, as well as several novellas/short stories in anthologies. This is the proper reading order to get the most out of the series. Obviously, if you don't mind reading out of order, feel free to read them however you wish, but I know I would go crazy reading them that way :)

Kim Harrison has signed up with her publisher to write 12-13 books in the series, as well as a free-standing novel and a collection of short stories. I'll update this list as I find out more information.

Titles

The names of the books in The Hollows series may seem familiar, especially to those who love movies. That's because most of them are based on the titles of Clint Eastwood movies. Kim loves Clint Eastwood so decided to go with that theme. She has said that she views Rachel as a bit like a sheriff from the wild west, righting wrongs, taking the law in her own hands, a bit like Clint Eastwood, so the titles just seemed right to her. People in countries other than America may experience a bit of difference in the titles displayed here. Some titles don't translate well, others the publishers' just think aren't suited to the area, so they will often change them overseas.

Entering the Church

Picture of Church Door via Creative Commons from Laurel714

Not many people live in a church, but this trio does. Ivy can live in a church because she is alive though a vampire, in other words, a living vampire. In The Hollows, living vampires are not affected by churches and sacred ground, only dead vampires due to their lack of a soul.

Book 1-Dead Witch Walking

Dead Witch Walking is the first book in The Hollows series. It features the initial alliance between Rachel Morgan, Ivy Tamwood, and Jenks, as well as their departure from the I.S. and opening of their own agency. Not only does Rachel have to get used to living in a church with a living vampire and a pint-sized pixie, but she also has to stay alive, since it seems everyone wants her dead.

"It was the interns that did the nitty-gritty day-to-day policing of Cincinnati and its largest suburb across the river, affectionately known as the Hollows. We picked up the supernatural stuff that the human-run FIB--short for the Federal Inderland Bureau--couldn't handle. Minor spell disturbances and rescuing familiars out of trees were in the realm of an I.S. intern. But I was a full runner, damn it. I was better than this. I had done better than this."

Taking up a city block, the church, cemetery, and garden is just perfect for Ivy, Rachel, Jenks, his wife, and all of his kids. Inside the church for the ladies, and the garden for Jenks and his family.

Book 2-The Good, the Bad, and the Undead

In The Good, the Bad, and the Undead, the second book in the Hollows series, Rachel barely has time to recover before being drawn into even more danger. Ley lines witches are dying all over the city, the FIB need her help to find out why; Nick is endangering himself needlessly; and Ivy, Ivy has secrets.

"My skin tightened in anticipation. I took off the fish tank lid, then pulled the green fishnet from an inner pocket of the jumpsuit. Standing atop the step stool, I pushed my sleeve to my elbow and plunged the net into the water. Immediately both fish darted to the back."

Stirring Up Some Magic

Picture of Kitchen Cooking via Creative Commons from heartajack

Rachel often mixes up spells in the kitchen at the church. It's every earth witch's dream, though she has learned not to cook and mix spells in the same pans.

Magic in The Hollows Series

In this series, the main character, Rachel Morgan, is a witch. She creates magic spells and does other magic things. There are three main types of magic in this world:

Earth Magic
Earth magic is what we typically think of when we think of witches and magic. It is the use of the energy in natural things to make spells. The life energy in plants is used to do most of the spells, though black witches may also use animals or even people to power theirs. Though it takes more time to prepare, earth magic is more powerful than ley line and can permanently change things, unless doused in saltwater.

Ley Line Magic
Ley line magic uses natural lines of power, called ley lines, to power spells. It relies on having access to the ley lines, as well as the ability to handle the power involved which involves familiars, so has its drawbacks, but is usually more immediate and more adaptable to different situations.

Demon Magic
Demon magic combines earth magic with ley line magic, and is practiced primarily by the demons and their familiars, which unlike in regular ley line magic aren't animals, but are usually snared Inderlanders. Demon magic is much more powerful and quick, but involves a harsh penalty, black smut on the practitioner's soul. Thus demons use familiars to do much of the work or to take the penalty so their own souls stay cleaner.

Dates From Hell

This book contains several novellas, including one from Kim about The Hollows, which is called "Undead in the Garden of Good and Evil". This short story features Ivy Tamwood and is set before Ivy and Rachel get together in Dead Witch Walking, the first main book in the series.

The Hollows Series Setting

Book 3-Every Which Way but Dead

The third book of the Hollows drags Rachel further into situations she knows she should avoid, but can't. Nick is drawing away, Kisten is drawing closer, and Al is far too close for comfort. In order to save Cincinnati and herself from Piscary's clutches, Rachel made a deal she never thought to make and now must pay the price.

"I grimaced, glancing at the brightly lit church behind me where Ivy and I lived. Ivy was running errands, not even aware I had made a deal with a demon, much less that it was time to pay for its services. I supposed I could be doing this inside where it was warm, in my beautiful kitchen with my spelling supplies and all the modern comforts, but calling demons in the middle of a graveyard had a perverse rightness to it, even with the cold and snow. And I wanted to meet it here so Ivy wouldn't have to spend tomorrow cleaning blood off the ceiling."

By Tink's Panties!

Jenk's favorite curses usually involve Tinkerbell. "By Tink's panties" is one of the more polite ones :)

Book 4-A Fistful of Charms

This book, book four of the Hollows series, takes Rachel and Jenks out of Cincinnati, to Michigan where they have to rescue Nick and Jenks' son from Weres.

Beings in The Hollows Series

The world of The Hollows have numerous races and more are being added all the time. Thus, this is not an all inclusive list. To avoid spoilers, I also did not add several of the races that have been added over the series.

Humans
Humans were the majority of the population on the world for much of the past history, but when the T4 Angel virus hit, their numbers were knocked down. They still outnumber the other races, but aren't as dominant as they once were.

Witches
The witches of the Hollows series are different from most witches in other stories. They aren't just humans that can do magic, they are actually another species, and can't interbreed with the humans at all. Rachel Morgan, the narrator and primary character is a witch.

Vampires
The vampires of the Hollows series are a bit different from the norm as well. There are several varieties and though they all can, and will drink blood, their power levels are very different, as well as statuses among themselves.

Living vampires are alive, but infected with a vampire virus. The living vampires are divided into two types, those born with the virus, called high-blood vampires, and those infected with the virus by a vampire, called low-blood vampires. High-blood vampires are stronger since they were infected with the virus while in the womb, and they will automatically become regular, undead vampires when they die, unless killed twice. Low-blood vampires rely upon the blood of an undead vampire for power, and if not turned by a vampire at the moment of death, will become permanently dead.

Undead vampires are living vampires that have died. They lose their souls when they die, have much more power than the living vampires, and rely on blood. The older they get the more powerful they are.

Vampires rely on social hierarchies that are ruled by master vampires who control certain territories. The master vampires have groups called camarillas, that are made up of their chosen followers or peons. Ivy, one of the primary characters is a high-blood, living vampire from an important family line.

Pixies
Pixies are a small, humanoid race, that live in gardens where they survive on plants and pollen. They have wings and can fly, and are often used for surveillance and in roles where their small size allows them access that would otherwise be denied. They have person-sized personalities, just packed into smaller bodies. They also have an intense rivalry with a similar species, the fairies, whom they battle for control of gardens. Jenks, the third primary character, is a pixie, and him, his wife, and their kids, live behind the church in the garden in a tree stump.

Fairies
Fairies are another small, humanoid race that live in gardens, but they survive by catching insects for their food instead of using plants, and will demolish a garden very quickly in their pursuit of prey.

Weres
It hasn't been revealed yet how many types of weres there are, but the series primarily deals with werewolves, or Weres. Weres are born Weres, and are not made by someone getting bitten. They can change shape whenever they wish, though they are very much influenced by the moon cycles.

Demons
Demons do not live on the same plane as the humans and Inderlanders. They live in a place called the Everafter, and very rarely cross over into the regular world. When they do it is usually because they have been called by a human or Inderlander in a summoning. They are not the religious version of demons, but are instead just another race, they do not appear red, or devil-like unless they wish to pretend that way, but normally look more like regular people, though they often take the appearance of a person's worst fear.

Taboo Tomatoes

After the virus swept through the world killing people, tomatoes became something humans didn't want to see. Inderlanders still liked them though, so they are available at some places in the Hollows, but most try to avoid having humans see them.

Book 5-For a Few Demons More

In book five of The Hollows, Rachel still has the focus, an ancient artifact desired by just about everyone, except Rachel. Knowing that having it fall into the wrong hands may lead to a battle between all the major players of Inderland society, she has to come up with a way to get rid of it. Oh, and there's also a serial killer on the loose, and the FIB think David is the culprit.

"Terror smothered my like a blanket. I couldn't see it, couldn't hear it, could hardly sense it. But my body had become a battlefield--one where I didn't know how to win. Possession was a black art, and I hadn't taken the right classes. Damn it, my life isn't supposed to be like this!"

Kim Harrison is a Secret Identity

Recently Kim Harrison revealed in Locus Magazine that she's not actually Kim Harrison. Well, many loyal readers of course assumed that she used a pseudonym but I don't know how many could have guess the complete truth, that Kim Harrison is a character the real person (?), Dawn Cook dreamed up. Citing that she wanted privacy, Kim/Dawn donned a wig, wore different clothes, and overall played a role whenever she went to events as Kim Harrison, in order to avoid having people know who she really was. Here's a link to the Locus Magazine article Kim Harrison: Secret Identity where she did her big reveal. Though it may seem like we get to know writers, how they really are inside where it matters, through reading their books, I guess that just isn't the case for some of them.

Spreading Out from the Hollows

Kim is branching out into youth fiction with her new Madison Avery series. It has the same sort of feel as the Hollows but is a bit toned down for young adults.

Burning Bunnies

Burning bunnies are Kim's idea of fun-no, not really! Burning bunnies is actually Kim's view of ideas. They are so cute and cuddly, that Kim talks to them and pets them. The bunnies/ideas sit on her desk for a while then suddenly flare up and start creating more ideas, that spread across her office. She has to corral those burning bunnies by writing them down and sending them off to her publisher. At the publisher's the burning bunnies spread even more and are captured onto paper which is sent off to bookstores, where maybe you or I see them sitting on a shelf, looking so cute and cuddly, and so take them home where they get talked to and pet and then, maybe spread even more burning bunnies.

Books Written As Dawn Cook

Recently, Kim revealed to Locust magazine that she's been holding back a secret since the start of the series. We loyal readers were shocked to say the least. Turns out, Kim isn't Kim. Kim Harrison is a persona that Dawn Cook "cooked" up when she started writing The Hollows series. It turns out she dresses up, wears a wig, and has a completely different background from what she led us to believe. The books series below, The Truth series and The Princess series are books she wrote as Dawn Cook. They are very different from The Hollows series, but are good in a different way.

The Truth Series

Another book series by Kim Harrison written under her real name of Dawn Cook, the Truth series is quite different from The Hollows. Written for young adults, the books spotlight a young girl learning to control her magic and decipher the mysteries surrounding her.
