Welcome to the World of Thomas!
I had no idea how popular this little train was until I created my first 3-D Thomas cake last year. Upon posting a photo of the cake to my cake blog (Cake Space) I immediately began receiving emails from Thomas fans interested in obtaining their own set of instructions. This demand led to my very first cake tutorial, which launched in December of '06. The development of the tutorial led me to this Squidoo Lens, created in an effort to promote the tutorial!
In creating this lens I only became more aware of the true phenomenon of Thomas. As I scoured the net looking for Thomas related information I wasn't disappointed with the number and variety of links, photos, and even videos available to share with Thomas lover's of all ages. So, without further ado, I bring you the Thomas the Tank Engine Lens! As with all my blogs and lenses, this is a work in progress and will be updated frequently to bring you all the joy that Thomas has to offer!

Thomas... A Little History Lesson
It all started with one little boy!
In the early 1940's Rev Wilbert Vere Awdry of Wilshire England, handed his 3 year old son a little wooden train. Young Christopher was in bed with the measles and Wilbert sought to comfort and entertain him with stories of talking locomotives.Early stories included Edward's Day Out, The Sad Story of Henry, and Edward and Gordon. This caring father illustrated his stories, bringing the trains to life with human-like faces expressing emotions and personality. The stories were told again and again until young Christopher memorized them all.
Later, Wilbert's wife encouraged him to submit his stories to a publisher and in 1945 the first story sold well enough that Wilbert submitted more stories. For 23 years, Wilbert submitted a new book each year to keep up with the demands for more Thomas!
In 1983 Wilbert's grown son, now with a 3 year old boy of his own, decided to pick up where his father had left off and created 14 new Thomas stories to share with fans around the world.

Thomas and Friends is a British children's television series, first broadcast on the ITV network in September 1984. Until Series 7, which premiered in 2003, it was named Thomas the Tank Engine and Friends. This series was shot on 35mm film. The first series was filmed in Battersea, London and thereafter at Shepperton Studios.
It is based on The Railway Series of books by the Reverend W. V. Awdry. These books deal with the adventures of a group of anthropomorphised trains and road vehicles who live on the fictional Island of Sodor. The books were based on stories Awdry told to entertain his son Christopher during his recovery from measles. Many of the stories are based on events from Awdry's personal experience.
The show has featured storytellers Ringo Starr (1984-1986), Michael Angelis (1991-present), George Carlin (1991-1995), Alec Baldwin (1998-2002), Michael Brandon (2003-present), and Pierce Brosnan (Guest Narrator).
Many businesses have been eager to cash in on the worldwide popularity of the series. 'Thomas'-themed merchandise has appeared in almost every form imaginable, from books and magazines, through vast series of models, to duvet covers, cutlery, soft drinks and even spaghetti shapes.
Heritage railways have also benefited from the series. "Day out with Thomas" events, in which passengers are given the chance to ride in full-size coaches pulled by locomotives resembling Thomas or his friends, provide a considerable source of income, and attract those who might not otherwise visit the railway.
September 4, 2009 was the 25th anniversary of Thomas & Friends, as the first ever episode "Thomas and Gordon" aired exactly 25 years ago on September 4, 1984, on the British terrestrial channel ITV1.
