The Three card Monte (Find the lady) card scam

This lens is about the classic street scam known as three card Monte or "find the lady"- where you will see some man in a corner of some quiet street taking money off people who really think they can see where the queen (playing card) is out of three cards, two of them are indifferent cards.

The operator of the scam seems to mix up the three cards but it's still quite easy to see where the queen is and some people keep winning money on it. If you don't know the scam you may feel this is a sure thing and in no time you place your money where you're sure the queen is. In no time..you have no money left! There is no point complaining here because most of those standing around the operator are working with him, there will be lookouts for the police, heavies to stop you even thinking of getting your money back and plants in the crowd who are the only people who will win!

Thee car Monte isn't only a scam, it's a very entertaining trick to perform as magic and as a fun way to show people never to gamble on it! I have always been fascinated with "find the lady" and it's origins as a street hustle and rebirth as street magic. I have learnt some new moves from Paul Zenon's excellent book "Street Magic", including a very deceptive bit where even after the queen card has its corner turned up- the audience will get the wrong card.

If you see this being done as a real street scam- beware that the people involved are not going to be nice people- so don't hang around if they don't want you to!

SAVE YOUR MONEY- DON'T EVERY BET ON THIS SCAM!

The Three card Monte

From New Orleans to Europe

It's likely that this scam has been around almost as long as playing cards and certainly by the turn of the fifteenth century. It was a very popular scam in New Orleans in the 1800's and in California during the gold rush when there plenty of new suckers moving about. When the police got wise to the scam it moved on to Mississippi river boats and often the Captain would get a cut of the takings to keep him sweet.

Ben Marks, had a more sophisticated way to run the scam, he had a bargain store in Iowa as a front offering goods at knock down prices and inside there would be an operator running the three card Monte- potential customers were drawn into the game, losing their money and leaving without any of the goods!

In the UK the game is known as "find the lady" and in France it's known as Bonneteau

Here are some excellent resources to give you the edge in performing this great routine as entertainment. The history of the three card Monte as a street scam give you lots of opportunities to develop patter such as talking about being fleeced by the con or perhaps by playing the role of the crooked operator by giving a volunteer in your audience some fake money to play with. Not only is this a very entertaining set piece but a valuable lesson to people to never fall for this scam in real life!

Some People Don't Want to be Filmed!

Here are a selection of related photographs on Flickr- some of the people don't look too happy being photographed bacause they're street hustlers- I don't recommend you take photos of them yourself (or at the very least do it covertly). Still, it's fun to see that this old scam is still out in the street- some people never learn!

Important!

Most Important Thing

Do not ever bet real money on this or challenge an operator in the street- it's certain that there will be many more people involved in the scam than is obvious and there will be "minders" ready to use force should they feel it necessary.

Do - learn this as entertainment to perform as a magic routine.

Three Card Monte as magic

I've had fun learning this- why don't you?!

I taught myself this great street hustler's trick from Paul Zenon's great book "Street Magic" (see my review on Squidoo) because it's not your average card trick- it is visual and can be repeated with a good story about street hustlers!

There are only a couple of moves to learn and time can be spent perfecting them to make this illusion both eye-poppingly good and entertaining. Performed smoothly alongside a good line in patter about con men and street hustlers in America on the paddle steamers this is a fine piece of entertainment. It could also be performed as a warning to avoid scammers and people could be invited to bet with play money until they have none left!

How I perform "Find the Lady" as entertainment

Playing in role

I spent a long time learning the mechanics (the technique) to do three card monte but had to really think about how to perform it as entertainment. The problem is, if you do it as a challenge to your audience- there is a good chance that someone will simply say where they think the Queen card isn't and they have a fifty fifty chance of being right!

There is also the slight lack of entertainment value in the bare bones of the trick- so I got my thinking cap on! My solution was firstly to make the progression of the trick get more and more impressive- much like the explanation in Paul Zenon's book on street magic. Secondly I decided to play the role of both the punter and the operator of the scam- I was, in effect, challenging myself.

I added a cockney accent and a hat to the operator role and spoke as myself in my role as the punter- giving the audience a running commentary.

I also added a surprise ending- which I wont divulge here because it would ruin the surprise should you see me perform it!
