How Tiffany Dow Began a Work at Home Career

It was late 1999 and my son was diagnosed with RSV - an infant respiratory illness. At the time I worked nights at Bank One's Corporate Center resolving funding issues so we wouldn't have to put our kids in daycare, but knowing he was sick - I couldn't bear it. The day he was diagnosed, I packed up my desk and turned in my resignation effective immediately.

I vowed to stay home for good, even if we had to cut all of our expenses and downsize significantly. While surfing eBay for birthday Jets gear for my husband (since I'm in Texas and can't find it here), I found "Professional Services" listed. Nosy one that I am, I clicked the link and it took me to Elance.

On Elance, I built up a reputation as a top Internet Marketing writer, ghosting for some of the biggest names in the business. My pay rate steadily increased as demand far outweighed supply for my time.

Eventually, befriending these top 'net marketers paid off for me in another way. They taught me part of the ropes and I was able to morph into a marketer myself full-time after joining marketing forums like the Warrior Forum and meeting wonderful mentors like Craig Desorcy of We Help Newbies who has given awesome advice on how to start a blog on his IdiotProof Blogging site!

My Must-See Lens for 2008-2009

Most Important Thing You Need to See:

Why make the transition?

Let's look at this week alone. A client used to pay me $1,000 to write a 50-page eBook (this is before my rate rose to $30 per page). This week as a marketer, my Social Networking on Squidoo eBook has already taken in over $3,000.

This doesn't include sales from my affiliate products that I promote or the sales from my other eBook called A Writer's Guide to Internet Marketing. You can see the difference in money, but there's another perk.

My Squidoo eBook was written and launched. Now - I do nothing. My affiliates promote it and it's really true passive income for me. Am I kicking myself for not making the transition sooner? Yep!

One of the best decisions I made was to launch my PLR Mini Mart, because my visitors can give me a custom request of topics they want and I can build my PLR packs for what I already know my target audience needs.

I then took my Writer's Guide and evolved it into an eBook for any average person - not just writers: Building an eBook Empire. I know many marketers use rehashed bonuses, but I like to write unique ones that complement my products, so this guide teaches those who can't write, how to!

PS - My son is now 8 and thriving. I stayed up with him all night, every night - just making sure he was breathing.

I also gave birth to a precious baby girl who is now 3 and it's been Heaven being a work-at-home mom whose career is soaring.

Yes! The RUMOR Is True...

Lewis Smile and Tiffany Dow UNITE to Build Your Lens!

"After realizing we were both being hounded by people wanting us to create lenses for them based on our own success, Lewis and I decided to team up and launch www.BuildMyLens.com.

Tiffany Dow - the Early Years

I'll get into more about what helped my success in later modules, but I like to get to know people on a more personal level, myself.

Growing up, I was extremely thin. At age 6, I weighed 22 pounds and wore toddler clothes. They tested me for every disease imaginable but I simply refused to eat. I outgrew that obviously (lol).

It wasn't enough that I was super skinny - I was hideously ugly, too. I was legally blind so I had to wear coke-bottle thick glasses with huge round rims and my teeth stuck out almost straight so that people called me Bugs Bunny and the cruel kids ostracized me on a daily basis. They said I could "eat corn through a picket fence." (I can laugh now, but boy that one hurt!)

Then in 5th grade, I got braces. They wouldn't be off for 3 more years, but I couldn't have been more proud. It gave me the confidence to make the drill team at my school and slowly but surely, I gained friends.

In 7th grade, I got contacts, too, so my big blue eyes were no longer hidden and I finally felt good about myself. I was always taller than the other girls. (I'm about 5'8). I eventually grew out of my ugly duckling stage and turned into a Santa Swan

(Warning: this was a long time ago and I'm back to my ugly phase. LOL)

Santa Baby!

Growing up...

Growing up, I played golf from age 3, but at school I also played field hockey and basketball. I went to private college preparatory schools from 4th grade on. The crowd was made up of blueblood socialites and let's just say my dad was more "new money."

My dad sold insurance, traveling around the country. He'd be home for a week and gone for two. My mom raised us but I love them both equally. They're still alive. My dad suffers from dementia to a point (he's in his 80s) and my mom is my best friend and also a writer (she's in her 60s). They remained caring about each other after their divorce.

My parents split in 1978, when I was just 8 years old. My dad kept my childhood home because he knew it was sentimental to me (he was never here so he really didn't need to keep a home fulltime). And then when he moved to Florida, he gave it to me to raise my kids in. It's a wonderful street - a dead end, tree-lined lane situated on the outer edge of the big city, so you still feel like you have space to breathe.

I have a sister who is 6 years older than me. She went to a church boarding school, so we were never close. She eventually became addicted to drugs and we have just recently began trying to reconcile after many years of bad blood between us due to her addiction and the fact that she has 4 kids and 1 grandchild.

High school and college were better for me...

Tiffany Dow - Into the Grown-Up World

College, Parenthood, and Beyond

So I went to Texas Tech University right out of college and studied Journalism. I originally wanted to be in broadcast journalism because I envisioned myself the next Barbara Walters or Diane Sawyer.

After the first year, I was horribly homesick. I came home for the summer and since my boyfriend, a football player for Texas Tech, decided to stay home, I left Tech, too.

I immediately got an offer to train with a former PGA pro who offered to take me to the next level - turning pro in exchange for a cut of my future earnings. I also immediately had a sponsor offer to pay my way through the mini-tour before I turned pro.

During this time, I got really good at my golf game. I had always played on the team in high school, but now I was able to enroll in tournaments against grown men and outdrive them, although my short game was always scary.

I got restless, though...

I broke up with my cleancut boyfriend and started dating a bad boy. My golf game suffered because it was hard balancing late-night partying with 5 A.M. training at the driving range.

In the end, I wound up pregnant with my son, quitting golf, and returning to my journalism roots. I wouldn't trade my son for the world. It's the life I was meant to have and he's my angel.

While back in college, raising my son as a now-single mother, I became mature and focused. I wanted to make a great life for myself and my son. I finished college - this time tackling print journalism. I also met my husband, who I've been with for 10 years now.

Ten years later, I am President and CEO of my own corporation and owner of a thriving Internet marketing business. I have three wonderful children - ages 15, 8, and 3. I'm married, and very happy with how my life has evolved.

I'm now remodeling the childhood home to update it with everything it needs to be modern. I just bought energy-efficient appliances and WOW - what a different a new washer and dryer makes! Next up? Rewire the whole house! Pricey, but I can now afford it. After that, the roof, plumbing, foundation, and then al the fun begins - the aesthetic stuff - new kitchen, second story, and more!

Books I Love

I've read each of these and was absorbed with the characters. Highly recommend them!

Honorable mention: Deep End of the Ocean
