Tiger Shark Anatomy

Another way to correctly identify a Tiger Shark is by looking at the nose. They have one which is very blunt. No other species out there has one quite the same way. They are designed to be able to see and smell exceptionally and that is part of what makes them such a threat out there in the waters. They use these senses to help them find prey. They can sense electrical fields from other living things in the water, a characteristics of all species of sharks.

They have a mouth structure that is different from other types of sharks as well. They have a palate which makes it very hard for them to release something from its mouth once it is in there. This is believed to be one of the reasons why very few humans survive an attack from a Tiger Shark. The animal may realize it isn't a food source but not be able to release it.

The teeth on this species of shark are among the sharpest out there. They are like serrated blades that will cut right through bones and all on its prey in a second. They have a long and slender body form that allows them to move through the water at very fast speeds. They also feature two dorsal fins, with one being quite a bit larger. There is also a split gill that is behind the eyes. This is how they get oxygen to the body.

Tiger Shark Evolution

For more than 350 million years there have been sharks out there on the year. We don't have all the details though when it comes to the specifics for Tiger Sharks. They may have evolved from land creatures but it is hard to determine at this point in time. Many of the tests out there are done on the many shark teeth that wash up on the shore. There is still more evidence that has to come along before we will be able to say with any certainty how the Tiger Shark evolved.

Tiger Shark Behavior

With the information about what we know about the behaviors of the Tiger Shark, they are among the most dangerous types of sharks for humans to ever encounter. Luckily, the times when a human will actually come into contact with one out there are few and far between. Yet those incidents make headline news and that is all it takes for their bad reputation to surface once again.

These particular sharks live alone so you don't have to worry about more than one in a given area. They are extremely territorial so they will bite and fight with any that try to find food or residence in a vicinity that they have already claimed as their own. They aren't out there looking for humans to bite or to consume though as many people believe.

While most sharks tend to remain on the surface, the Tiger Shark is the most content about 3,000 feet below the surface. That makes them able to sneak up on prey very easily. That is also why they aren't always seen until the very last second. You can see them with their heads above the surface though, looking around for food. This helps them to get what they need and to also save energy at the same time.

The Tiger Shark has an average life span of about 50 years. That is if they are left alone in the wild. There are a few of them out there in captivity but they don't seem to do very well in such an environment. Many of them end up dying due to various forms of bacteria or viruses in such a location even with very careful handling

Researchers aren't sure how they find each other to mate since they are on their own out there with quite a distance between them. Another reason that we don't know very much is that these sharks engage in mating deep into the water.

It is known that the males can be very aggressive though, and even bite the females often in order to get them to comply. The females will carry the offspring for about a year after they conceive. They will give birth to live pups - and there can be as few as 10 or as many as 80 of them. These young have to care for themselves from the start, but since they aren't in very much danger they have a good chance of surviving as long as they can find food.
