Tinkerbell, aka Tinker Bell or Tink in short, was created by Scottish author and dramatist JM Barrie, making her first appearance in 1904 stage play Peter Pan or The Boy Who Wouldn't Grow Up which was expanded as novel Peter and Wendy seven years later. Barrie, a former journalist, saw her as a fairy who mended pots and kettles (like a tinker), and made the sound of a tinkling bell. If Barrie portrayed her in a supporting role, Walt Disney elevated her to star status, notably in his film studio's 1953 animated classic, Peter Pan. A seven-inch tall Tinkerbell in bronze can be found at London children's hospital Great Ormond Street after being added to the original 4ft statue of Peter Pan with Sophie, Countess of Wessex, performing the unveiling in 2005. Peter Pan author JM Barrie had ordered that the copyright of his characters should go to the hospital, although younger fans may associate them more with the Disney film studio. Original book illustrator Arthur Rackham equipped Tinkerbell with a wand and a trail of fairy dust. When she appeared in Disney's 1950s Peter Pan animation, there was no wand to wave and she was followed by a twinkling cloud of magical pixie dust that could help humans to fly. Margaret Kerry, US actress, dancer and voiceover expert, was the model for Disney's Tinkerbell in the studio's animated 1950s hit. Owing her stage name to comedian, singer and actor Eddie Cantor, the former Peggy Lynch, then in her early 20s, was auditioned by animator Marc Davis and got the job. Tinkerbell was cast as a young blonde in a lime green dress and green slippers, although Davis always denied that emerging actress Marilyn Monroe had influenced him. Tinkerbell would go on to host many of Disney's TV programmes and is still featured in Peter Pan's Flight, one of the original rides at Fantasyland in the Disneyland theme park which opened in California in 1955.
