Puppies always need to 'go' when they wake up. I have a golden labrador pup, and he has not messed in the house once! This is because I am always aware of what he is up to, and as soon as he wakes from a sleep I take him outside for a pee. After a meal I stay out a bit longer, as he usually needs to do a 'poo' after eating. He is only 8 weeks old, and already he takes himself outside to do his 'business'!

Thanks for sharing this site! We have a new 2-week-old puppy in the house and we don't know how to potty train him! Forget our fully-grown Retriever! It's late to "save" him. I'll teach myself how to potty train this new puppy of ours and your lens has great tips on how! Hope you can also visit my lenses or if you love dogs and you love checks, maybe, Golden Retriever Checks and other dog checks will appeal to you!!! 5 stars for your lens!!!

Oh, the trials I've had house training my dogs. We always put paper down in the kitchen, but one day I got wise and put it next to the exterior door to give the dog the idea of going there, and not to the kitchen, each time. It worked! I've heard people say they NEVER paper train first. I suppose it's ok if you're home all the time. You definitely need to be available to keep your eye on your puppy, watch for the signs, and scoot him or her outside right away. This works exceptionally well and seems to really shorten the learning time. My Healthy Dog Nutrition Secrets site is new but there are some training tips there as well as on my lens over here... http://www.squidoo.com/dognutritionanddogcaretips

Hi Sarah13 - thanks for your question! From what you have said, this could be a separation anxiety or insecurity issue. You could try and tone down your "going out" routine so Dudley does not see it as such a big deal. Make a point of going out a couple of times for say 10 or 15 minutes, then come back in, but do not make a fuss of him until you have been back in a couple of minutes. After a short while, you should see the problems decrease.

Another thing you could try is DAPs (dog appeasing pheromones) to help with any anxiety or stress.

The ultimate housetraining guide should have all the information you would need to deal with Dudley's problem.
