7 Tips For Great Digital Pictures

Everybody is taking pictures! Camera phones are everywhere and everybody is a budding photographer!

BUT,...are you satisfied with the pictures you are taking with your camera phone? Are they grainy or out of focus? Do other people seem to take much better pictures than you? Are your friends begging you to upload pictures to Facebook and you are too embarrassed to show them?

Here are 7 Tips to help you get started.

Pick The Right Camera

Number One

Digital cameras are not as daunting as they may seem at first. If you grew up using film cameras then you will love digital. Learn a few basics and they are so much easier to use and cheaper!

There are a few things to know that will help.

1. Decide what you want to do with your camera.
Do you just want fun pictures and snapshots? Do you want to be able to enlarge your pictures? Will you use your camera for special occasions such as weddings and sporting events? Will you camera be used for pleasure pictures for yourself or for business?

2. Decide how many megapixels you need.
The larger the number of megapixels the larger we can make the final picture. A camera phone usually has few megapixels and when the picture is enlarged it gets fuzzy. Try to get as many megapixels as you can based on what you will do with the pictures and the money you plan to spend on the camera. A 4-5 megapixel camera will meet the needs for most people.

3. Decide how much zoom you want.
Most cameras have optical and digital zoom. A camera will say it has high zoom, but most of that might be Digital Zoom instead of the better Optical Zoom. Base your decision on the amount of Optical Zoom.

4. Make sure you get a memory stick.
Most cameras have very little memory, but with an add on memory stick you can take hundreds and even thousands of pictures. Try to get at least a 1 gig memory stick. You will take more pictures with your digital than you would ever imagine.

A few extras: Underwater pictures are fun and you can buy a camera for a little more money that will go underwater.
Most digital cameras have a video function. Buy one that also records sound. Not all cameras do and it is well worth it.

Go Click Crazy!

Number Three

Thanks to digital cameras and chips that hold hundreds of pictures you can click away all day and it will not cost you a dime!

Don't wait for the perfect shot, just start clicking and go click crazy! If you take enough pictures you will always find an unexpected treasure.

Do what the professionals do. They know that every picture will not be gold, but with enough pictures they will find a beautiful nugget!

Make It Fun, Fun, FUN!!!

Number Four

Instead of posing your shots, try taking pictures when someone is just being themselves. Kids are really good at this. Let them play, and you stay off to the side and take pictures without them knowing. Capturing the moment is so much more fun than having a perfect posed picture.

I was so frustrated with my daughters fascination with the toilet, until I decided to have fun with it and started taking pictures.

Never Say Cheese!

Number Five

Digital cameras never seem to catch the moment when everyone is in perfect position. If you snap the picture when everything is perfect you will miss the shot thanks to digital cameras being generally s-l-o-w.

I bet you have dozens of pictures that seemed perfect until you snapped,... and then the subject moved right out of the shot. Kids are famous for this! Mine gives the "perfect" smile and when the camera snaps they are picking their nose.

Try skipping the cheese and let your subject act natural. Its digital, so take a LOT of pictures! You will catch the perfect moment in one of the shots.

Crop Your Pictures!

Number Six

A wonderful tool to use on digital pictures is to "crop" the picture. Most photo editors allow you to crop your picture. The great thing about cropping is that you get to keep only the part of the picture you want to keep. Or you can focus in on the most important part of the photo, like little toes and fingers.

Crop out unwanted backgrounds that take away from the focus of your picture.

Take Your Camera With You Everywhere!

Number Seven

How many times have you missed the moment because you forgot your camera?

Use your camera phone! Camera phones are great for catching things at the moment it happens.

Better yet, keep your good digital camera at your side everywhere you go.
