To Become A Wiccan

For many, when they first encounter Wiccan ideas, they are surprised to find how closely it is associated with their own long-held beliefs regarding nature and the world.  Remember that to become a Wiccan it is far more important what you are than what you call yourself.

There is no secret recipe for learning how to become a Wiccan.  It is a belief system whose main requirement is your commitment and dedication to learning and living in accordance with what you learn.  While there is no direct path that you must follow to become a Wiccan, a few simple things will put you on the right course to becoming a practicing Wicca.

The Wiccan religion is one that encourages people to gather information and make their own decisions about it.  One of the best ways of doing this is by reading from the many diverse authors who have written about the Wiccan religion, being Wiccan and various ways of becoming a practicing Wicca.

Hundreds, if not thousands of books are available that concern Wicca.  In fact, when you are looking to become a Wiccan, the sheer amount of information available can be quite overwhelming.  In addition to books, there are also thousands upon thousands of pages of information available on the internet.  With both published books and information on the internet, it is important to take everything with a grain of salt. 

There are books and web pages that present information that is not accurate, especially with respect to the history and origins of Wicca.  As with any type of research always be careful to judge the source of your information and beware of information that seems to fly in the face of common sense.

A good way to choose books or information dealing with the Wiccan religion is through personal recommendations.  New Age or Wiccan booksellers will be a great source for those types of recommendations.  You can also look for book recommendations from other Wiccans on the internet.

Keep a Journal

When you study, it is normal to take notes.  Now, there won't be any multiple choice examinations as you learn to become a Wiccan, however, it is a good idea to keep a journal of your thoughts as you read and learn.  Being a Wiccan is a very personal and unique experience for each individual, so keep track of your feeling and how you interpret different information that you come across.  Eventually, this journal will change into your own book of shadows, where you will also record your magickal workings.

Perform your First Ritual

At some point in your journey to become a Wiccan, you will probably want to perform some sort of dedication or ritual.  If you have been reading a variety of books as recommended, you will have come across some different types of ceremonies and rituals.  Remember, there are no secret words or set ingredients, what matters is what it means to you.  Take some time to create an experience that will be meaningful to you.  This is an important moment in your life; something you will look back on for many years.
