The Benefits of Having Toads In My Garden

I have always been fascinated by the chubby fat toads hanging out in the garden. I don't know what it is about these fat, warty, bug-eyed creatures that I have always liked so much, but I do know that they are a very beneficial part of my garden. They quietly go about their business each evening eating and eating the bugs that come their way. I read that each toad will eat from 50 to 100 bugs each night. That is reason enough to like them!

Toads Are Not Princes In Disguise!

You've heard the story - Kiss a frog and he'll turn into a prince (or princess). You know that's not true, but toads can be the prince of your garden. Just think of all the bugs and slugs and other pests that they are keeping off of your plants (and out of your house!) Toads actually live near your house foundation or in your window wells and eat insects and pests that would potentially come into your house. That's reason enough for me to keep them around!

Toad Camoflauge

Toads are great at hiding themselves during the day. They use their back legs to dig themselves down into the dirt - usually under some leaves or wood with only their eyes showing. They are not deliberatly trying to scare you! They just rest during they day and come out at night to eat insects. I never see them until I go to pull out a weed or do something to disturb the area they are in and suddenly they leap out of their hiding place to give me a heart attack! I try not to hold it against them and they seem rather irritated as they hop away looking for another place to sleep.

Homes For Toads

Toads love to have a place to hang out during the day - and hey, if they're in the toad house, you won't be wondering where they're going to pop up and scare you! Of course, you could make your own toad houses, but these are just too cute to resist!

What a fun lens. Thanks for the info, I like them more now. I know they hang on my back porch where I feed my dogs. I think they eat the left over spilled dog food. Only thing is then the snakes come lookin for the fat toads!

i love all toads and it is great that you have some in your yard. well, i have one living in my living room. he is a cane toad and measures 12 inches from snout to vent and weighs almost 5 lbs. i had a wooden house built for him that looks like a table, cost $600. i love him and hug and kiss him everyday. he is allowed to hop all over the house and i take him everywhere with me.
